Have You Ever Seen a Female Cable Technician?

Yesterday morning, PetSugar had cable installed in her new digs. Afterward, she told me about her experience and disclosed that her Comcast cable technician was a woman. You know me - I'm all about sisters doin' it for themselves but for as many times as I've had Comcast employees in my apartment, I've never once had a woman install my cable. I admit that I was a bit surprised. Sure, it's a well-known fact that the number of men outnumber women in the tech industry, but I never thought twice about tech service jobs like cable installers. Did I just perpetuate a double standard by always thinking that my cable guy would be . . . well, a guy?

Honoring Some of Our Favorite Geeks For Black History Month

We may have Valentine's Day on the brain, but February also marks an important time of the year - Black History Month. In honor of Black History Month, let's take a look at some of our favorite geeks, both past and present. Everyone on this list has made vast contributions to furthering tech as we know it.

Dwayne McDuffie - The recently passed McDuffie wrote comic books for both Marvel and DC (including Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, the Fantastic Four and the Justice League of America) before founding his own company, Milestone Media, which helped pioneer the use of multicultural characters as its heroes.
Mark Dean - Nerd alert! Without Dean, there may not have been a PC - he holds three of IBM's original nine PC patents, leading the teams that developed the ISA bus and the first one-gigahertz chip.
Mae Carol Jemison - It doesn't get much geekier than space travel; Jemison was the first black woman to travel in space.
Philip Emeagwali - We can all blame Emeagwali for our Internet addiction. He developed the fastest supercomputer software in the world. His IQ is too high to be measured by conventional standards, and he's won a Gordon Bell Prize, which is like the Nobel Prize for computer science.

Pixar Announces New Dinosaur and Inside-the-Human-Mind Movies at D23

At yesterday's Disney expo D23, Pixar fed the fandemonium by announcing two all-new movies now in production. This year marks the animation studio's 25th anniversary, and judging by yesterday's offerings, their innovative spirit shows no signs of fading. The first film they unveiled explores what the world might have been like if dinosaurs were never wiped out by a giant asteroid, but continued to exist on Earth. Director Bob Peterson, a longtime Pixar story artist and the voice of characters like Doug from Up, is helming the movie. He said Walt Disney's animatronic dinosaurs, which he first saw at the New York World's Fair as a child, inspired the idea. Bob shared one still with the audience, but the finished product won't arrive in theaters until Holiday 2013.

The second movie will take a look inside the human mind and explore the reasons why we get songs stuck in our head, why we dream, and even why we remember. Not many details were revealed about how scientific, or fantastic, Pixar's approach to the subject matter may be, and the effort is clearly in the early stages - the movie won't be released until Spring 2014. A Conversation About Android

With the love of the Infuse 4G still swirling in my head, I struck up an IM conversation with a friend of mine about the Android operating system yesterday. I didn't know exactly what I was getting into when I asked, but my friend brought up some really good points about Android that even I didn't consider.

Recently there was a debate as to why more women aren't using Android devices. Some say there's no "emotional attachment" between the female geek population and Android like there is on Apple, but these points my friend and I discussed could be more reason why women (or a large population as a whole) don't "get" Android: it's totally confusing! I've compressed our conversation into three points below. Read through, and tell me what you think in the comments.

It's Insanely Fragmented
Right now, you can find four different versions of Android floating around on several different devices. There's no regulation given that the hardware and software are from different origins. Android 2.2 is on most phones, while only the newer phones can support 2.3. Obviously, 3.0 is for tablets.

90210 "Nerdy Little Secrets": Most Scandalous Moments

Now that Spring break is over, it's back to the day-to-day drama on 90210, and things are anything but humdrum. Silver is officially feeling the effects of Adrianna's sick revenge, but Naomi's too wrapped up in her relationship with Max to come to the rescue of her friend. Meanwhile, Ivy hits a relationship hurdle of her own.

Annie's in a pickle of an entirely different kind: she takes on a new high-paying job as an assistant, only to realize that she's playing housemaid to a former star. Aside from Silver's scenes, it's a fairly tame episode, but I have a feeling that we're being set up for a quite a bit, as we head into the home stretch of the season. Ready to break it all down? Thursday Comic-Con Must Sees

Hooray, it's the return of Comic-Con and all the madness that accompanies it! As usual, the show's schedule of events is packed this July 21-24, so we'll attempt to highlight the most exciting must sees. The convention starts with a huge bang on Thursday with the Twilight panel, though there are plenty of other events to add to the Comic-Con itinerary.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. - Hope you've already been camping out for this one, because fans began lining up days in advance. Expect new footage from the next Twilight film and a cast Q&A. Location: Hall H
Kinect Star Wars panel, 10-11 a.m. - First announced at E3, Kinect studio head Jorg Neumann and LucasArts lead producer Craig Derrick will share fresh news on the game, including a mystery announcement. All attendees will receive a limited-edition poster! Location: Room 32AB
Stan Lee, Yoshiki, and Todd McFarlane, 1-2 p.m. - Comic fans unite for the Q&A session with legends Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane, who are creating a new character, Blood Red Dragon, with rockstar Yoshiki. Location: Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Warner Premiere: H+ and Mortal Kombat: Legacy, 2-3 p.m. - A Comic-Con exclusive first look at H+, the new web series from X-Men producer Bryan Singer. The web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy will take the stage next for a panel discussion with the director, Jeri Ryan, Michael Jai White, and others. Game of Thrones panel, 3-4 p.m. - If addicted to both the books and TV series, this is one not to miss. Beavis & Butthead, 5-6 p.m. - 2011: the return of the original bad boys of animation. Creator Mike Judge is on hand to offer a sneak peek on MTV's new episodes. Location: Room 6A
Batman: Arkham City, 5-6 p.m. - A preview of the gaming follow-up to 2009's fan favorite Batman Arkham Asylum. Location: Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront
Entertainment Weekly: The Visionaries: A discussion with Jon Favreau and Guillermo del Toro on the Future of Pop Culture, 6-7 p.m. - Cult favorite directors Jon Favreau and Guillermo del Toro discuss bringing geek life to the mainstream entertainment industry. They'll discuss their inspiration, current film work, and how technology is changing cinematic storytelling. Location: Hall H
Her Universe: What Women Want in Their Female Sci-Fi Heroes, 6-7 p.m. - Gone are the days of the "damsel in distress" sci-fi character (we hope). If you can't get into Hall H, check out the panelists with a background on Star Wars, Smallville, DC Comics, Universal Cable Productions, and Lost discuss the future of strong female characters in the genre. Location: Room 25ABC
History of the Modern Zombie, 7-8 p.m. - Beginning with the classic horror film Night of the Living Dead, zombies have become a large part of modern pop culture. Panelists including the author of Zombie Survival Guide, a UC Berkeley professor, and a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist will discuss the history of zombies in entertainment and why we're so interested in them. Consider it the most fun college lecture you'll ever attend. Location: Room 7AB
