Website of the Day: Apostrophe Me

Sometimes I just like things explained simply, in good old-fashioned plain English. For instance, it was so liberating when the guys from Commoncraft talked about Twitter in layman's terms, and now with a website called Apostrophe Me, you'll never misuse apostrophes again, thanks to their cute and detailed flow chart. Other things worth checking out on the site? Scroll down to take one of their fun quizzes, like the "How Many Germs Live on Your Cell Phone" test!

Website of the Day: Learn Something New Every Day

I've already confessed my love for mood-boosting sites and sites that deliver daily doses of awesomeness, so it's natural that I'm loving this site from the UK, Learn Something Every Day.

Each day features a new fun fact illustrated on a bright background. For example: "The film Titanic cost more than the Titanic itself," and, "Penguins are able to jump two meters high."

You can submit your own fun facts to the site, too. They doesn't make a claim to validate each fact selected, though most seem believable - I just love the site's simple design, bright colors, and entertainment value. Plus, who doesn't like amassing random fun facts to impress your friends?

Remember in Jerry Maguire when Ray says "Did you know the human head weighs eight pounds?" to Jerry? Talk about one of the most memorable quotes from the entire movie.

I don't know what it is about random tidbits of information, but I love the idea of learning fun facts that aren't common knowledge. Now can I learn over 6500 interest facts with the free cool facts iPhone app.

To receive a new fact, all you have to do is shake your iPhone or iPod Touch, or you can swipe left, right, or tap your phone. And even if you don't find it entertaining, I'm sure it's something that kids would find amusing.

PBS Reaches the Masses With PBS Video

I often get the urge to step away from the funny YouTube videos and expose myself to something. . . educational. Gasp! Yes, you can find me watching just as many videos on Academic Earth and iTunes U, as I do on sites like Hulu. And now I've got a new one to add to the mix - PBS Video. PBS has just launched a new video portal (in beta) where you can find all sorts of clips and full length episodes from a variety of programs and topic areas. The site also gives you the ability to share videos with friends and family, or purchase a copy by clicking "Own It."

Website of the Day: Academic Earth

So you may visit Hulu for your favorite TV shows and Fancast for free online movies but what about the smart stuff, like lectures and academic courses? I've already touched on iTunes' free educational content section of the site called iTunes U. But now there's a new website called Academic Earth which offers over 2,395 lectures (and courses) from educational institutions as well as guest lecturers, all for free!

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.
Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
Choose "Blog" and "Regular Post."
Give your story a "Title."
Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.
Click "Next."
Choose the audience for your story to "Website of the Day" in the dropdown menu.
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").
Change channel to "Technology and Gadgets."
Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
Click "I’m done" to submit content.

So join the Website of the Day group and share information about all your favorite sites! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

iTunes U: Free Educational Content at Your Fingertips

With back to school season right around the corner, I guess you can say I'm getting in the "school spirit" by showcasing some informative and educational tech tools. Well there's now a way you can access educational content 24/7 and it's called iTunes U. Filled with audiobooks, free lectures from hundreds of colleges and universities across the country, video files from museums, and language lessons, iTunes U makes learning easy and accessible. You can also sync iTunes U content to your iPhone or iPod and access it from your Mac or PC. Wondering where to find all this amazing stuff? Go to the iTunes store, and you'll find iTunes U under the iTunes store heading on the left side of the page. Check it out, it seriously makes learning fun.

Get Schooled with Educational iPhone Apps

Have You Taken Any Courses From iTunes U Yet?

iTunes U has been around for some time now offering up cool courses from schools around the country that you can download straight to your iPod Touch or iPhone. I don't know what took me so long, but I just took a few free courses on video editing over the past week and I gotta tell ya: it's pretty awesome.

I take public transportation every day to work, so being able to brush up on math, grammar, and even astronomy during my commute seems like time well spent. And you don't have to spend a dime, since all the courses are free. There's been quite a bit of content added since it launched last year, so tell me - have you taken any iTunes U courses yet?

Would You Want to Learn How to Drive on Your Nintendo DS?

I'm not one to underestimate the power of a Nintendo DS Lite, but to use one to teach you how to drive - you've got to be kidding me! DreamCatcher Games and JoWooD Productions are developing Drivers Ed Portable - a game for the DS. Don't worry, it won't do what I initially thought and freaked out about, which was taking students through driving steps while actually driving. But what this game will do is help prepare teens for the written portion of their driver’s license exam by featuring two separate teaching tools: testing and training.
The game will include exams for all 50 US states, 13 Canadian provinces and territories, as well as Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and is said to be available this Fall. I'm honestly not going to knock this until I try it, and with kids being such avid gamers these days, it may be the extra incentive they need to get down to driving business. Drivers Ed Portable plus real life one-on-one driving training, and I'm a huge fan. What about you?
