LucasArts Game Posters Are Free For Download

If you're a big fan of classic LucasArts adventure games, Lucas Forums is offering the game poster files for free to download.

The posters are available in high-resolution format, so you can easily print them out to 23-x-34 inches and resolution is 300 dots per inch and hang them on your wall!

Download of the Day: Books

I know my geeks are a literate lot, so I've dug up a new, free application for Macs to keep your analog books organized electronically. Where GoodReads is a great way to keep track of all books you've read, the download Books is your electronic library for all the books you own.

All you have to do is enter titles of the books you own, and Books will quickfill all the details of that book, including the cover art (once you've selected a quickfill metric in preferences). Once your book is entered, you can keep track of the most important thing about book ownership: the lending history! I'm always loaning my books out all over the place, so being able to keep track of them is going to be ultra useful. I've got to keep my shelves full, you know.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Download of the Day group
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Download of the Day")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

So join the Download of the Day group and share information about all your favorite downloads! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Student Sentenced to Death For Downloading an Article

As much as we debate the legality/illegality of downloading certain things on the Internet, I don't think any of us has ever feared for our lives because of our Internet download activity.

Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as we are; a 23-year-old student in Afghanistan is currently sitting on death row because he downloaded an article on women's roles in Islam on the Internet. Seen as blasphemy, the young man now faces death. Please watch the video for more details.

I have this thing where I can't always watch videos on the Internet when they come my way - and not because I'm not allowed to at work, but because I don't feel like I can take the time to focus on just one video. Turns out "my thing" isn't so weird, because some kind soul made YouPlayer, a Firefox extension that lets you watch videos in your sidebar!

Once installed, all you have to do is drag and drop the URL or your search results for the video into the player.

With YouPlayer, not only can you multitask - i.e., checking email while a funny vid plays - you can also keep them in your sidebar to return to later, so you don't have to bookmark them or remember the site or YouTube search term when you get around to showing your friends later!

Geek Tip: Fix Misspelled URLs With URL Fixer

I love typing in www.google.con or yelp.lom to be told that the address cannot be found. I freak out, tell Firefox it's an idiot, and then head to downforeveryoneorjustme.con, at which point I develop an ulcer until I realize that it was just my butterfingers making me enter typos into the address bar.

URL Fixer is like my Zen-master - it keeps me calm by fixing my misspelled urls. After you tell it to confirm confirmations, you'll get a pop up asking you if you meant their suggestion (which appear to be pretty accurate so far!). Butterfingers, you've met your match.

Did You Download Firefox 3 Yesterday?

The newest version of Firefox was released yesterday, and Mozilla pushed to hit their Guinness World Record goal - so hard that they overloaded their servers in the morning, as some of you experienced when you tried to download it.

I'd been using the beta version of 3 for a while, and now that my essential add-ons work (trust me, once you get used to them, Colorful Tabs and FoxyTunes are necessities), I'm loving how quick it is.

So did you download it yesterday and contribute to the big, geeky goal?

Cool Download: eBay Companion For Firefox

Although you might lose some of your Firefox extensions when you cross over to Firefox 3 – and trust me, you're gonna want the newest version since it's faster and more secure – you can still download the same sweet extensions that Firefox is known for.

I happen to have a few eBay bids out on some precious Polaroid film, and am watching others before I jump in. With the Firefox eBay companion, I can see the stats on my bids right on my browser - without having to stop what I'm doing to log in. What's cooler is when an item's auction is about to end and I get outbid, a pop-up box will tell me I better pump up my dollar amount before it's over!

Cool Download: Pandora Desktop

I know there are a ton of you out there that are fans of Internet radio, especially Pandora. How awesome has it been to discover new artists, and listen to your all-time faves while you're at the office, surfing the web, or finishing up those term papers right from your computer. I've been a big fan of Pandora for a while now, and if it's possible, it just got better.

Now you can download your own desktop Pandora icon that lives on your Windows desktop, or your Mac's dock . . . removing that step of opening a web browser to listen to your streamed tunes. I know what you're thinking, "Big whoop, so I open another tab or window. I'm already online anyway." But the new desktop feature makes it that much easier to get down with one click, preventing you from accidentally closing your Pandora allocated window. Plus, it cuts down the amount of memory your browser uses while Pandora is running (which means faster surfing). All it takes is a quick Adobe Air download and you're off and running. Or at least shimmying in your office chair!

Make Wedding Planning Easier by Downloading Software

You don't have to be a geek to like wedding software, but if you like to be organized then perk up - this may be for you. If you've been using Excel spreadsheets to organize your wedding planning, that's great, but labor intensive, plus there is so much to remember to record and follow! Let some software hold your hand and tell you it's OK.

There's a few options as far as wedding software, and I like programs that are downloadable (no waiting time or waste!). iDo Software is a comprehensive mother lode of organization. They've pretty much thought of everything, from guest-list issues and organization (like invitation tracking, flight and hotel info for each, gift recording, and virtual seating charts) to preloaded checklists for anything and everything you might need. At $30, it's a lot cheaper and less high strung than hiring a J. Lo. Potential drawback? It's PC only.

Geek Tip: Beware of the Dreaded Illegal Download Letter

Lifehacker reports that a reader recently got a letter from her ISP provider, warning her that Paramount/Dreamworks was aware of her illegal downloading via BitTorrent. And while they weren't suing her, nor was her internet being cut off, the letter from Cablevision was a warning.

This particular reader had downloaded over 30 movies when she received the letter and has stopped downloading and implored Lifehacker as to what's next.

Many commenters reported getting the letter for downloading copyrighted material and not having been disconnected or sued, and therefore felt it was a mere scare tactic (that worked quite well, I might add). On the other hand, a Sugar co-worker tells me that her friend got a warning letter and has been disconnected ever since (including being black-balled in other locations, too). Whatever your downloading habits, just be aware that this could happen to you, too! Be careful, geeks.
