QlockTwo Clock: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

Forget old, traditional clocks with those lame arms - the QlockTwo (around $1,200) timepiece is breaking all the rules over here. Set in a wooden box with a custom color glass face, this clock uses little lightup words to tell you the time in five-minute increments. Not only does it give you an update every five, but for all you traditionalists who need a more accurate quote, you can check the little (more familiar) clock in the bottom corner.

Need the time my friend? Well, it is five to 11. Says so right there. But you're on your own for the a.m. and p.m. specification.

Al Gore wishes he invented the Internet. Most of us wish we created just about anything with a little "i" before the name. Or any of those can't-live-without-them apps. There are an infinite number of devices, operating systems and programs running, cruising and crashing the geek world at any given moment. Which do you wish had your name in the developer's spot?

Font Geeks Unite: TypeNuts' Designy iPhone Wallpapers

Free iPhone wallpapers are rarely outrageously beautiful, so when I find a collection of them that are, I go nuts with them.

Whereas before my best resource was Poolga, I now have a second option.

TypeNuts also has a reserve of gorgeous, rich, high-res images, and like Poolga, they're totally free.

But that's not even my favorite part: the wallpapers on TypeNuts all share a theme of using type and font-based designs.

I'm an addict, and this only my latest fix.

Mike and Maaike: Design Meets Tech

I was shocked to learn that the makers of the pixelated Stolen Jewels from a couple years ago, Mike and Maaike, were also the designers of the T-Mobile G1! After some investigation, I found that the SF-based design pair has designed even more geeky products - and you might be surprised what came from the modern "jewelers."

Apple's New Black Glass Screen: Better or Worse?

It sounds like everyone is universally excited about the new pricing and specs for the new MacBooks, but one area where I'm hearing different things is in the design. The new MacBooks look like the new Pros, with black glass corner-to-corner around the screen, and black keyboards like the Air has always had. This is obviously different than the old version (still currently available as the $999 entry-level MacBook) that's all white plastic.

I try not to get too attached to any Apple design since it's inevitable that they get tweaked a little, and I'm also curious to see the changes they make, like the slick black edges and keyboard, but I've already heard a lot of dissent.

Tell me, do you think the new black design is better or worse?

Geek Out: What's Your Desktop Wallpaper?

I love seeing the offices of design mavens because they inevitably have some fabulous desktop wallpaper on the screen for the photo op, always something that complements the rest of the design of the office.

Case in point: Making it Lovely's Nicole shared her office recently, and my eye gravitated immediately to her Mac and the art on her desktop, the colors of which coordinate with the dominant pinks and reds of her office space.

I too enjoy a pretty, serene wallpaper as the setting for the madness that takes place on top of it; right now I can't seem to shake the Kaiku Marimekko pattern. Other times, I want to see a family pic stretched across my monitor, and sometimes I crave a simple, solid color to calm me. And I am not opposed to a really high-res photo of a flower (shoot, I am a girl).

But I'm curious about everyone else, since I think your computer's desktop wallpaper says a lot about you; What's yours?

Scribble a New Laptop Design for Sony Vaio and Win $5,000!

Screw decals! I'm designing my own laptop case and getting it straight from the factory looking all hot! Excuse my crass excitement, but Sony is hosting a contest to design the Vaio's exterior, and if you win, you get $5,000!

In the "My Graphic Splash" contest, Sony wants you to turn graphic designer, and in case that five grand is not enough incentive, you also get a trip to New York City and your design will be featured on sonystyle.com.

They provide a design template that you just upload your idea to (and BTW, they advise that you avoid white and stripes. . . but not images of the band The White Stripes). If you need inspiration, check out the laptop design that won HP's very similar contest!

My apartment is flooded with power cords, extension cords, power bars, and multi-outlet adapters, you name it, I got it. Become an Armchair (er, Deskchair) Designer With Spoonflower

Lord knows I have been Googling in vain for a couple years now for an online service that would convert my own designs into a fabric I could sew with. Ladies and gents, that day has come! New website Spoonflower is promising to do just that!

Though it's currently in beta, right now you can add your email to a list to receive an invitation (mine's in; fingers are crossed). Regardless, I am so psyched. Being something of a crafty geek, I can't wait to throw together some custom designs for home stuff as well as DIY laptop sleeves and monitor covers!

A yard is about $18, which if you sew, you know is a leetle pricey but not terrible (plus, it's custom, so hello!). Need more convincing? Check out the flickr pool of some awesome designs!
