Closer Look: Fake Korean Shuffle Returns

When I first shared a sneak peek at this faux shuffle that a friend of mine found in Korea most of you were mesmerized by its octagonal navigation and suspiciously familiar body shape and color. Some of you even wondered if the packaging for the fake shuffle was anything like the real Apple packaging. I was able to get my mittens on some additional pictures and the verdict is in: The creators of this noteworthy knock off may have focused on making the iClip.Se MP3 look just like the shuffle, but they went for more modern, iPhone-inspired packaging. (Note the plain black cardboard and the sleek plastic case.) Is it just me, or is this thing more entertaining the second time around?

Closer Look: United States Of Lego

I may be a grown up, but I still can't stop talking about Legos. As part of the World Children's Festival, hordes of kids recently showed up at a giant Washington, D.C. playground with thousands of mini building blocks. They showed off their creative skills by creating skyscrapers, bridges, railways, and even Las Vegas hotels. The real life LegoLands, which are located in the US, Denmark, UK and Germany, use about 1.6 million tiny plastic bricks. Other cool Lego trivia I've picked up along the way? Only one percent of the plastic waste in Lego factories goes unrecycled and Lego Group produces over 306 million miniature tires each year - more than any other tire manufacturer in the world. That's a whole lot of Legos.

Closer Look: Webble Foot Rest

Last week I gave you a little teaser of the Webble, which is a new kind of foot rest that isn't about resting at all. I finally found some more photos and learned that unlike most foot rests that are designed to create a more ergonomic desk set up, the Webble is all about motion and activity and hopes to keep even the most anxious geeks entertained and on the move while at their desks.

According to the designer's website, the Weeble's ultra smooth gliding motion gets your legs moving while you work. "Departing from the static, almost orthopedic aesthetic of so many foot rests, the Webble’s iconic shape invites a smile and encourages your feet to go for a ride." They even added a patent pending spring suspension and self-braking mechanism that will make you feel like Tony Hawk at your desk. The patent is still pending on this one, but I can't can't wait for it to hit the market.

Beef Up Your iPhone's Camera With a Telescope

OK, OK, I know that the iPhone has its drawbacks. No video capabilities, no camera flash, and certainly no camera zoom. I knew these downsides and decided to dive into the Apple pool anyway. So is this Camera Telescope for your first-gen iPhone a savior, or is it just putting a Band-Aid on a bigger problem?

Adding a 6X zoom to your iPhone would be a nice addition, but you'd run the risk of looking like a total dork with that telescope sticking out the back of your sleek handheld. But of course, for $18, it might be worth it for those times you're stalking a celebrity from your corner table at the Ivy. I dunno, I'm torn. What do you think?

Closer Look: Samsung's Armani Phone

I know. I know. I'm a tease. I have been taunting you with talk of Samsung's Armani phone for months now. First we heard about it and guessed what it might look like. Then a picture of what may or may not be the "real thing" popped up on the internet, and despite not knowing if the pic was real, we were pleased it looks a lot like we predicted. I finally have some more legitimate news. This week Engadget featured a gallery of pictures of the phone's design and reported it will feature a 3 megapixel camera, 2.6-inch 262K color QVGA touchscreen LCD, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support, microSD expansion, full Internet browser, and support for H.263, AAC/MP3/WMA audio and MPEG-4 video.

According to Daily Mail, the Samsung Armani phone will have an in-built "rape alarm" function that can be activated from inside your pocket or purse.

Described as a 'ground-breaking' achievement, the new phone automatically sends an SOS text message to five pre-programmed family or friend phone numbers, alerting them to danger. Intended for use by anyone being followed suspiciously or finding themselves in any physical danger - but unwilling to provoke attack by getting out their mobile - it is designed to prevent an attack.

Closer Look: Samsung's New Crystal USB Audio Player

I finally got the chance to get an up-close and personal look at Samsung's latest mp3 player, the crystal U3 USB digital audio player. While looks can sometimes be deceiving, I kid you not when I say this player is extremely small. The ultra slim U3 is literally a USB flash drive turned music player as the USB stick pops out so you can directly insert it into your laptop. With no wires or programs to download and a 15-hour battery life, this player is popular for those who want instant plug and play functionality. Available this August in pink, blue, green, white and black. Priced at $90 for the 2GB player.

Closer Look: Sheilas' Heels

Everybody's been talking about a new footwear design concept that hopes to make women safer and more comfortable behind the wheel without compromising their love of heels. The idea sprang from a British insurance company Sheila's Wheels, which claims to specialize in women's insurance. Their idea is a safe, flat driving shoe and a glamorous pair of heels in one - all interchangeable at a push of a button. Personally, I can't handle the pink and black action on these babies and can't imagine wearing them, but I wouldn't mind a more chic chic heel that I can walk and drive in. What are your thoughts?

Closer Look: Porsche Phone

With this week's news that all LG Prada phones will get free insurance I started thinking about those designer phones and when the line between regular, but functional phones and luxurious brand-name driven models will be drawn. As we know from the Vertu Ferrari phone that line clearly won't be drawn by car companies. Porsche has upped the market with the concept drawings for a Porsche P'9521 Phone, which makes the unlicensed Porsche Cayenne phone we saw a few months ago look just plain silly.

According to Yanko Design, the casing for the phone is milled out of a solid aluminum block while a double hinge enables the screen to be rotated through 180 degrees, a feature which will allow the phone to be used as a digital camera.

Even more exciting (and slightly 007) is the fact that the phone has a fingerprint reader, which will identify the user and protect personal data. The phone will reportedly be released fall of 2007 in Porsche Design Stores. It will not be sold in the US, Japan or Korea. And so I cry, just a little.
