A Circuit Board Eyeglasses/ID Holder That Is Such a Geek Treat

I think this creation of geeky goodness, tops my list for ways to reuse old circuit boards. Etsy seller DebbyAremDesigns got really resourceful when piecing together this one of a kind recycled circuit board ID badge/eyeglass holder (which I'm naturally calling a necklace - hee hee). The artist says:

A funky badge holder made from recycled vintage circuit boards, vintage lucite and glass beads from the 1950's as well as recycled colored "bell" telephone wire from the 1950's! I've also taken very old capacitors from the 1940's and repurposed them into additional decorative components.

I just love how every piece is so unique and different - not to mention, the colorful beads and wire which make it all come together so nicely! Now if only I had to wear a badge at work, I'd be one sexy geek! You can purchase one online for $67.

Circuit Board Recycling Reaches Its Greenest Heights

I'm always in for a unique way to recycle and reuse circuit boards, but usually the novelty look of the boards makes for something that's fun-looking, like this necklace, but not objectively cool-looking.

This Circuit Board Pencil Cup, however? Definitely an exception. Check out that color! The neon apple-y green is a refreshing hue that would brighten your whole desk area. And it's green in the other, more important way!

It's so hot it's sold out for now, but similar recycled computer goodies are available from the seller in the meantime.

A circuit board may simply be a small, insulated board where interconnected circuits and components are mounted, but it has come to represent something much larger. In fact, circuit boards have been a source of inspiration and a material staple for designers and artists of all sorts since the widespread use of the personal computer.

I like circuit board pieces because they seem to embody the complicated and ongoing workings of a computer, but at the same time seem natural and almost organic because of their subtle, earth colors. While tech inspired art and design isn't for everyone, I've seen a real emergence of circuit board designs that are sophisticated, thoughtful - and dare I say - even geek chic.

Matt Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso took their girls Isabella and Gia out for a stroll in NYC today. Earlier in the day Matt walked his stepdaughter, Alexia, to school before picking up multiple drinks from Starbucks. He's going about his East Coast routine after wrapping up a busy 2011 that saw the release of three big movies, including the family comedy, We Bought a Zoo. Matt isn't slowing down in the New Year since he already has Elysium and Liberace on his plate as well as a sexy Vanity Fair cover with George Clooney and Daniel Craig. While Matt hangs near home, his pal George has been busy on the award show circuit with his latest red-carpet appearance at yesterday's National Board of Review gala.

George Clooney Temporarily Joins the Good Morning America Gang

George Clooney was up early to stop by the Good Morning America studios in NYC today. The star of both The Descendants and The Ides of March broke from his busy award season circuit to share the anchor desk with hosts George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts. After declining to do a teaser for Celebrity Wife Swap, George Clooney spoke about his amazing 2011 and multiple nominations. He said, "It's been a fun year, yeah. Now I have to go back to work. I need to get another job!" George is in the Big Apple for this evening's National Board of Review Awards, where he'll pick up a best actor statue. Then it's back to LA for Thursday's Critics' Choice Awards. George will see if The Descendants wins any of its seven nominations, or if Ides takes home best acting ensemble. George will also present Sean Penn with the Joel Siegel Award.

My Picks From DWR's $1,000 Giveaway

If I were eligible for the giveaway, I have a few pieces I'd love to add to my home with the $1,000 gift card. I'd start with the Tom Dixon Etch Pendant ($375, top row, middle center). This unique shade is made by employing the same industrial process used to produce electronic products such as circuit boards. This method allows for intricate patters to be cut directly into the metal. I love how the very high tech production method results in a very organic and delicate looking piece.

Speaking of organic, the Alma Allen Bronze Candleholder ($275, second row, left) has that covered and then some. This unique piece is part of a limited edition series of 250, and is hand cast out of solid bronze. I'd love to mix this with other metal tones on a mantel or coffee table.
