Search a Site, Save a Doggie

I'm a huge animal lover, so when I came across Dogpile, a search engine site that is trying to raise $1 million before 2009 to donate to animals in need, I wanted to get involved immediately. With the way the economy is right now, charities often suffer and people are more apt to give away pets due to financial woes. Similar to GoodSearch, which donates money to the charity of your choice, Dogpile will donate a portion of its search revenue to helping our furry friends.

And on Wednesday, Dogpile launched a new search engine aggregator site called Dogpile Search and Rescue that will donate money to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) whenever you conduct a search. Don't expect Google, but just know how much you're helping out, just by doing what you would naturally do on the net!

Website of the Day: SocialVibe

Feel passionate about a certain cause or charity and want to do your part to help, but can't donate thousands of dollars to it? Well SocialVibe is already getting a ton of praise for making it easy for people to make a real difference by posting their very own "badge" on social profiles. All you have to do is select your favorite cause to support, choose a sponsor and post your SocialVibe badge to your social networking site profiles (like Facebook or MySpace), and then you earn points for donations to charity. Here is Hayden Panettiere's page where she is supporting The Whaleman Foundation. It's extremely user friendly and a simple way to make a big difference.

Website of the Day: GoodSearch

We all spend so much time searching the net for various things, so why not use a search engine that actually donates money to your favorite charity while you search? With GoodSearch, all you have to do is enter your search terms and pick an NGO of your choice and they'll donate to that charity each time you do a search! Here's the 4-1-1: The site will donate $.01 to your charity for each search, 50 percent of their revenue goes to the NGOs listed on the site, and their primary search engine is Yahoo - which may take a bit of getting use to. But all in all, it's totally legit, and at least you're giving back while doing something you do on the net anyways! Digg Partners With Toms Shoes For Charity

Internet giant Digg recently announced they have joined forces with TOMS Shoes, the charitable shoe company who donates one pair of shoes to a child in need each time a pair is purchased. According to the Digg blog, the special-edition shoes were designed by a Digg designer, and feature the company's logo on the interior, zigzag stitching, and an orange sole.

Digg Founder Kevin Rose and TOMS Chief Shoegiver Blake Mycoskie announced the partnership via video, explaining the TOMS Shoes One to One program (one pair donated for each pair bought). The shoe company already operates exclusively on this business model, but this is the first time they're partnering with a social media company to reach a new audience. I already own one pair of gold, sparkly TOMS, but I think I want another pair! It's a great idea - and a feel-good way to kick off the holiday season.

Would You Pay $35k For a Tour of Bill Gates's Home?

As part of Microsoft's charitable giving campaign, founder Bill Gates is again auctioning off a tour of his Medina, WA, home. Last year the tour sold for $8,600, but this year the bidding has already reached $35,000. You have to be a Microsoft employee to bid in the auction (which reportedly also includes "the world's best bologna sandwich," selling for $500), with all the proceeds benefiting charity.

Get Your Fill of Legos All Year With the 2010 Calendar!

It seems we're entering a bit of a Lego renaissance with everything from houses to MP3 players being built out of the little bricks - but let's not forget about our Lego people! These little guys may live in your Lego towns, but they get into some sticky situations and seasonal shenanigans in the UK's 2010 charity calendar. Available to purchase online, the calendar benefits the UK's National Autistic Society, which makes me feel good for indulging in one of my favorite geek items ever, and makes a great gift for a fellow Lego lover as well. Facebook Wants You To Send Hotness Points, Your Blood Type

I'm annoyed enough with Facebook applications demanding I send some random quiz to eight more friends, then eight more on top of that, just to find out which Sex and the City character I am or what American accent I have - I still don't know, since I generally tend to spitefully close the Facebook tab when I've had enough.

Therefore, I'm skeptical (and a little skeeved out) by the news that a New York charity, Takes All Types, wants to use Facebook to find blood type matches.

Takes All Types is seeking to utilize the potential of Facebook's platform, even though all I'm thinking is that I can barely keep up with who's added whom or updated what to their profile, let alone if they're O Positive. I'm reticent to put my relationship status on Facebook, and it wants my blood type? Back off, Tech Dracula.

Lisa I'Anson Donates Her Old Cell For Charity

British DJ and presenter Lisa I'Anson donates her old cell phone to raise money people affected by cancer. The Macmillan Cancer Support at Somerfield is hoping customers will donate their old mobiles and take part in their recycling campaign.

Just five old cell phones could raise around $50 for the charity. Get this, around 1700 mobile phones are upgraded every hour and over more than 30 million inkjet cartridges are thrown in the trash each year in the UK alone.

If you live in the UK, be sure to do your part and drop off your old used phone. Your small contribution can make a big difference!
