Geek Tip: Make Your Workstation a Little More Ergonomic

It doesn't take much to make your home workstation a little more body friendly. So before you head back to school this Fall, add a few ergonomic touches to your home office. I have professed my love for the Ikea Dave Laptop stand many times before, so if you must work in front of the tube (like yours truly), put it on a stand and not on your lap! Add a desk lamp to save your eyes, and either an amazing chair or a fitness ball (or both!) to save your back and shoulders. Also, make sure you have a pretty keyboard wrist rest to prevent typing fatigue.

Pottery Barn Piedmont iChair: Love or Leave?

I must be still dreaming about "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" because when I saw this Piedmont iChair on Unplggd, I immediately pictured myself getting cozy in it, reading a good book and sipping on some hot cocoa. Little did I know that this luxurious leather armchair includes a surround system for your iPod. With stereo speakers built into the wings, forget your paperback-curl up with an audio book instead! The Piedmont iChair is currently on sale for $849. I personally love it, but doubt I'd ever use such a pimped-out chair. What do you think?

CD Chair: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

While I have chosen to decorate my house with more of an understated and modern theme I have a bizarre fascination with intricate furniture with a touch of geek.

While only a concept, this chair made from hundreds of blank cds designed by Belen Hermosa offers inspiration for those of us that have gigantic used CD collections lying around. I can't imagine it's especially comfortable, but it does have a special geek chic flare, right?

I adore reading about luxury gadgets I would never purchase - from $20,000 gold and diamond encrusted iPod shuffles to $800 Titanium iPod Nano Cases. What I don't understand are semi-luxury items (as in items you don't really need, but might want) that aren't even all that luxurious.

The Relaxation Sound Chair from Brookstone aims to be one of those highly-coveted gamer and music enthusiast items, yet its function is lacking. It's just a regular chair that rocks on the floor and has a plug in slot for your MP3 or CD player. Of course there's also a headphone jack for private listening. The chair costs $139, which may sound inexpensive, but I for one seriously question the necessity or draw. Can't you just sit in your rocking chair and listen to your iPod? Call me when this baby will give me a massage and pedicure.

Massage Recliner With Voice-activated System

We've seen our fair share of techie chairs - from the iMedia chair, which looks like something that belongs in a hospital building, to the Souchpod chair, which is a fancy beanbag chair with digital control panels for mp3 players, games consoles, your TV or DVD, a computer or stereo. What we haven't seen is a chair that can take you on a magical, spirit lifting trip at the sound of your voice. The Inada Robo Chair Massage Recliner with Voice-activated System may do just that.

It features a voice-activated system that can adjust your reclining angle up to 170 degrees. Your voice can also activate the massage programs, position the 3D roller mechanism and regulate intensity. The massage recliner comes with three pre-programmed massage sittings for full body relief. It costs $5,999, but no one ever said you could get that kind of luxury for free.

Perfect Chair For Oscars Viewing

Starting around 2 pm today I'll be sitting on my couch with a glass of wine (hey, it's Sunday!) watching the Oscars pre-show and checking out Pop and Fab's live Oscars coverage. While I wouldn't change my flat screen or couch for anything, I am geeking out over this new iMedia chair. It may look like something you'd see in a hospital bedroom, but boy do its features pack a punch.
Apparently, the chair allows a surround sound experience that's not possible with standard home theater systems and a personal screen attached to the chair allows for enjoyment of iPod video media. The screen which is attached to a swivel so the arm can be adjusted for each person who is viewing video from the iPod. The 3.5" touch screen allows for control of the iPod's functions, something that is unique. The iMedia chair isn't on the market yet, but if it were and I lived in a tiny studio, I might hide it under a pretty cloth and unveil it whenever I needed some good media time.

The SlouchPod Interactive Gaming Chair

The makers of the SlouchPod claim that this interactive chair represents the next generation in Beanbags. I was never a huge fan of beanbag chairs, but this one may be an exception as it is completely wired for gaming and entertainment purposes. The SlouchPod features a digital control panel for mp3 players, games consoles, your TV or DVD, a computer or stereo. There are also built-in speakers with a subwoofer so you feel like you are in the center of all the action.
The only major boo-hoo about this chair is its hefty $600 price tag. But then again, Lazy Boy chairs are uber expensive, and they only massage you.

The Herman Miller Embody Chair Feels Good All Over

When furniture designer Herman Miller sent me one of their latest and greatest creations, the Embody Chair - which is both body and blogging friendly - I couldn't wait to see if it felt as good as it looked.

With the help of physicians and professionals in such fields like biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics, designers Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf created the Embody Chair with the office worker in mind, therefore making sure it was jam-packed full of health-positive benefits.

What instantly struck me about this chair was the fact that its entire backing looks like a real spine, with vertebrates and all. Once you sit down, you can actually feel it adapting to the shape and movement of your spine and it will move when you move. With adjustments for your back, seat height, arm height, arm width, the tilt tension (yes it can recline) and the seat depth, you can get the Embody to distribute your weight evenly and conform perfectly to your body. And even if your body moves, the lower back support always remains constant for perfect posture and back alignment.

Although the chair looks very dainty and delicate, it's actually quite sturdy and extremely heavy! So you don't have to worry about breaking it. The Embody is 95 percent recyclable, PVC free, and was made with 42 percent of recycled content. The chair is said to be available this January for $1600 - I know, pricey, but it is the Aston Martin of office chairs! And I can't confirm this, but I'm going to assume it will come in more colors other than yellow. Herman Miller even has its own Thoughtpile site where you can contribute solutions and creative ideas from topics ranging to the environment to urban design!

According to the Yelo website, the nap program is so popular they now offer memberships. I'm all for making mid-day naps popular, but I can't help thinking paying someone to let you sleep in their special chair seems a bit unnatural. Then again, no one can deny the effectiveness of a power nap.
