Whatever you might think about Cell Phone Straps and charms, they are definitely useful for getting a hold of your cell phone. In fact, since a surprising number of people drop their cell phones in the toilet, maybe we'd all do well to have a system for hanging on to our phones.

I'm not into cutesy charms and leashes, but these Mobigrips ($10 each) might be just what I need. So discrete they disappear into your hand, all you do is unpeel the sticker on the circle of the grip, and stick it to your phone. Then each time you hold your phone, you simply thread a finger through the attached elastic, so if you get bumped or fall, you're still hanging onto your phone.

And it looks like it might be fun to fake people out with an "OH NO I dropped my phone!" bit.

More Sleek and Stylish Storage Devices: For those of us who carry our portable storage devices on us 24/7, keep your eyes peeled for some fun new USB flash drives in '08. Check out these new flash drives from PQI called the Traveling Disk i201 which come in strawberry, pink, banana yellow, and blueberry blue colors. Storage capacity ranges from 1GB to 4GB.

Portable Media Players: Now that downloading movies off the net has become so quick and easy, more and more people will be investing in portable media players. Philips new flash based personal media player is fresh on the scene and is going to be a hot buy. With 2, 4 or 8GB capacities, a 3.5" LCD display, built-in speakers, and a five hour video life, you can't help but wish you got one for Christmas!

Fashionable and Functional Gadget Accessories: Gel cell phone cases became a growing trend towards the end of '07, so I'm sure we'll see more colors and designs in '08. American designer Dooney & Bourke has teamed up with Verizon to bring you this stylish cell phone wristlet, which I saw on Gizmodiva. Made from D & B's signature multi-colored white fabric, the wristlets have a magnetic flap closure to keep your phone secure, a sky blue lining, and a removable leather wrist strap. Verizon seems to be using these carrying cases to promote the LG Chocolate handset, but they can be used with any mobile. Currently available for $50 from most Verizon Wireless stores across the US. Love It Or Leave It: Joel Madden's Cell Phone Clip

Molly caught the "famous-for- questionable -reasons-but-looks- darn-cute-in-a-head-scarf starlet Nicole and her tattoed and sleeveless ruffian boyfriend Joel" this week - her words not mine! - and while she noted the couple has been out and about spending money and wearing rings on their wedding fingers, I think she may have missed a key accessory.

Yep, look closely, that's right.....Joel is actually wearing a cell phone clip. I know we've already deemed the only thing worse than cell phone belt clips are pocket protectors, but clearly Joel hasn't gotten the memo. Does he get a free pass because he's carrying a giant Dior bag, or does he need a geek-over stat?

Geek Tip: Take a Self Portrait With Your iPhone

One of my favorite iPhone features is its camera. It's of impressive quality for a cell phone camera, and has gotten successively better with each generation of iPhone released. Add the plethora of accessories meant to enhance the iPhone's camera and applications to enhance your photos, and my iPhone can produce better photos than my camera. But even with all of the additional bells and whistles, there was one thing I thought my iPhone camera couldn't do: take self-portraits. In fact, I thought the only real way to take a self-portrait was with a mirror, with the back of the iPhone in full view.

Sure, we joke about the famous self-portrait photos that show up all too often as Facebook profile pictures, the telltale extended arm in the photo holding the camera above eye level. But taking a self-portrait with an iPhone seemed nearly impossible; holding the phone in one hand, trying to tap the right place on the screen where the camera button is located, nearly dropping the phone on the ground. (Not that I've, um, tried this or anything).

The iPhone camera doesn't take the photo when you press the camera button, it snaps the image when you release it. So, in order to take a self portrait, open the camera function and place your finger on the camera button, but don't release. Then, you can turn the phone around, extend your arm, and take the shot. No more blurry photos or iPhone-in-the-mirror shots. Even more helpful? Make sure your phone is out of silent mode, so you'll hear the "click" of the shutter's release. Smile!
