Does Your Makeup Talk to You?

Every once in a while, I run across a gadget I'm not sure is kind of useful or just plain odd. Like cosmetic company Stila's geeky makeup case, which was featured on BellaSugar. Part makeup case, part portable speakers, the Makeup Player ($70) even comes with cosmetics inside.

Download instructional videos from stilabeautytube, plug your iPod (or any video-playing MP3 player) into the case below the mirror, and watch instructional makeup videos from a professional makeup artist as you try the tricks for yourself.

It seems a little gimmicky to me, but I could see the appeal, especially if you're trying to learn some new tricks. Would you use this case?

Vanity iPhone App Will Judge Your Beauty

Remember the computer that was built to rate your looks? If you were one of the ones who claimed you would want to know, then bust out an iPhone and download the $3 Vanity iPhone App, because its job is to evaluate a photo of you or anyone you enter in it and let it tell you how cute you are.

You get the dreaded 1 through 10 rating as determined by the Golden Ratio (that applies to attractiveness? Who knew?).

I totally talked a big game about how I was curious, but now that it's in front of me, I don't think I do want to know. My vanity may not be able to handle it.

Would You Want to Know If a Computer Thinks You're Pretty?

And you thought you had enough issues with your looks: a grad student in Canada has programmed a computer that can evaluate human attractiveness.

If that weren't frightening enough - it judges you on a scale of 1-10 (thankfully, there doesn't seem to be anything about a bathing suit round). The evaluation is based on the core data, from volunteer students that submitted photos with people they judged attractive. The computer is now able to recognize the good-looking features and rate accordingly.

Though I will tell you right now that I would rather stick a toothpick in my eye than find out if a computer thinks I'm hot, I'd be lying a little. I'm curious. Now you, be honest: Would you want to know what the computer "thought" about you?

Nail polish maker OPI has smartly recognized that gals who tap tap tap away at their keyboards and cell phones are a big beauty demographic, and has named its latest lacquers for Spring with clever, tech-inspired names.

The new colors include Lost Without My GPS, Access 24/7, Techno Girl, I'm Wired, Hi-Def, and IM Beauty. The bright polishes range in color from pink to orange to yellow.

Freaking out about how frizzy your hair will be some days? Get the Haircaster iPhone App for 99 cents and style with confidence.

Haircaster uses your location to find out the local weather and then analyzes how the humidity and temperature will affect your 'do. For those extremists, it advises you to stay in if conditions will have you looking Medusa-like.

A little superficial and silly, maybe, but it could save you a little stress on days when you want to look fab and frizzy craziness is unwanted (and when is it?).

IBM Debuts "Virtual Mirror" Kiosks For Hair and Makeup Help

Next week, IBM will be introducing their first ever "Virtual Mirror" kiosk at the National Retail Federation in NYC. What it does is take a digital photo (of the shopper) and scan in various makeup and hair coloring products that they may be interested in purchasing. Without having to actually try the makeup on you are guaranteed true colors and an accurate replica of your face. The EZ Face virtual mirror is already being used by Super-Pharm, one of the biggest drugstores in Israel, and will hit large US retailers sometime this year.

With virtual dressing rooms at a number of H&M stores and an Adidas shop in Paris utilizing virtual shopping mirrors, it's no surprise that this kind of technology is catching on. What do you think? Would you ever trust something like this to give you a precise makeup portrayal?

Everyone Loves a Makeover: iStylist iPhone App

I'm just sayin', you could literally be on your way to the salon when you realize that you don't know what kind of new style or hair color you want. Though I plan on getting this app, iStylist, just to see how I'd look with Reese Witherspoon's bob or Posh's pixie, and show whoever is nearest to me how fab (or fug) I'd look with a new do.

It's $2, but that's a small price to pay for realizing how washed out your complexion looks with that color you were thinking about before the peroxide hits your head.

Cell Phone Dermatology: The Face Rash

I'm totally paranoid about my face and am always trying to clean off my germy cell phones where they touch me, but it sounds like a bacteria-induced breakout is the least of my problems: Apparently the nickel used in many handsets can cause irritation anywhere you're touching it, like your cheek or even your fingers, just from typing.

It sounds like it's more of an issue with prolonged use, so if you're starting to get an itchy face - AKA "mobile phone dermatitis," then maybe you should whip out your headset if you can't bring yourself to decrease your cell phone use. Anyone else feel itchy just from reading about this?
