Geek Tip: Wake Up With the Web

While some people still rely on their giant digital alarm clocks for all their dreaded snooze interruptions, the serious geeks out there have turned to the internet for their wake-up calls. If you're looking to test out the web's wakey wakey services, I suggest iPing, which is a reminder hub that keeps track of your schedule and allows you to set notifications and calls to help you get out of bed, remember birthdays, or even take your medicine. The idea is similar to setting your smartphone calendar to remind you of events, but you receive an actual phone call.

I also like WakeUpLand, an online wake-up service that allows anyone with an ordinary touch-tone phone to set wake-up calls for a small fee, and Snoozester, which provides reminder calls. The Snoozester wake-up call service is touted as a "great way to stop oversleeping and start waking up on time" because it offers features such as repeating calls, a snooze button, fun Snoozester characters, and SecureAwake, a feature for heavy sleepers that calls you every three minutes (for up to 20 minutes) until you answer the phone to indicate that you are awake. You won't have any excuse to keep the carpool waiting.

I am totally one of those people that sets two or three alarms in case one doesn't go off. I don't exactly trust my laptop as a reliable alarm source for fear it will go to sleep or shut off. And with traditional alarm clocks, you can never be sure if you set the right time or if you got the AM/PM mixed up. With Wakerupper, you'll never have to worry about sleeping in again. Featured on lifehacker, Wakerupper provides free wake-up calls (just like hotels) and reminders online. All you have to do is enter the date and time you want the call, your phone number, email and a reminder text that will play over the phone when you get the call. Wakerupper can also be used with the iPhone. First of all, join the 'How To' Help - Guide To All Things Geeky
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Geek tip")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you think this person is geeky, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

So this might be a no-brainer in terms of its "totally geeky or geek chic?" factor, but I couldn't help but share the Angel wake-up alarm with you. When I first saw this device on Geek Alerts, I couldn't believe my eyes. The Wake-Up Angel was designed to keep you alert during those moments when you don't want to drift off (class, work, a date, you catch my drift). Just place it behind you ear and whenever your head turns 30-degrees or lower, the ear piece will vibrate. You can choose from four different adjustments of angle levels where you want the vibrator to go off. Set an alert for "Apple Tablet," and you'll get an email alert at the end of the day, twice a day, or anytime there's a tweet about it.

Nap Alarm: Does Just What You Might Think

Imagine this: You're cruising down the highway late at night getting sleepier and sleepier by the minute. You've had two cups of coffee, you've got the windows down and you're still ready for a snooze. What will prevent you from falling asleep and running off the road?

The Nap Alarm created by Japanese company Takanoha may look like a clunky Bluetooth headset, but it's actually a tiny gadget that prevents you from falling asleep. While I can see no real practical use for this while you're at home, in the office or just hanging out (set your real alarm clock or cell phone, people!) I guess having something like this could be beneficial if you were on the road all the time...and a total geek.

How does it work? First you put the Nap Alarm behind your ear then you drift off to sleep (whether on purpose, or not) and the gadget vibrates as soon as it detects you are starting to snooze. The device measures the speed of head movements in order to determine whether or not the user is falling asleep. I wonder if you'd get zapped every few seconds if you sat down to read with it.

The Retro Alarm Clock That Isn't Really Retro

This may look like a retro clock where you have to hit the side bells to get it to stop ringing (this part is true), but what you don't see is its unique modern capabilities. This clock easily connects to your PC or laptop via a USB connection so you can transfer audio of your choice to it. That's right, you aren't stuck with that annoying and loud bring-bring alarm sound.

Featured on coolest gadgets, these mp3 clocks by Thanko cost $25 and are powered with three AA batteries. Trust me, no one will ever know that your retroesque alarm clock is filled with your fave sounds and songs...that is, until it goes off! I'd say that this clock would make the perfect bedroom accessory for people who haven't gone digital or who want to keep things simple.
