CES 2008: Hands On Philips Active Crystal Devices

Last week at CES I got the chance to check out some of the Active Crystal USB Memory Keys from Philips and Swarovski. These Active Crystal flash drives are as luxurious in person as they appear to be on the product site. Made from polished stainless steel and silver shade crystals set in ceralun, this USB device comes disguised in a lovely lock. It also includes 1GB of storage (roughly storing 250 songs or 1000 photos) and is password protected. Both the heart and the lock cost $178 each.

Having seen a handmade 14K gold USB set with diamonds before I was a tad skeptical when I came across Ora-Ïto's Gold USB device, $260, but I have to admit, this one's not bad. In fact, it's downright pretty. You can feel like a queen of style and geek while the golden device transfers and backs up your files with this 500-GB of storage. It's Windows and mac supported. I'll bet it would look gorgeous in a Modern Marie Antoinette-inspired abode.

Laptop Fan Stand Lets You Work In Odd Positions

We all know how important it is to keep our laptops off our laps and bed covers so they can stay ventilated and cool and we all know what happens when we don't, but are we really so lazy that we need stands that let us lie flat and work on our computers? Thanko has created an aluminum/steel laptop stand that's USB powered and features two fans that blow room-temperature air into your hot laptop. While the stand allows you to lay back in bed, you can also use it in more practical positions - such as on a table, sitting up in bed or in a chair. I find the notion of working at the computer while laying down almost laughable, but I do like the simplicity and practicality of this stand, which because of the fact that it's USB powered won't require any additional outlets.

I'm all for crazy USB drives, but a headless teddy bear might be a tad over the top. Imagine sitting in a packed internet café and someone pulls out this cute plush toy, rips its head off and sticks its butt in the side of their laptop? Definitely an interesting conversation starter to say the least! William Blake once said he could look at the knot in a piece of wood until it frightened him. I only had to look at these oooms wooden memory sticks for a split second before I was profoundly frightened.
