Do You Think a Social Network For the Dead Is Creepy?

Well, it had to happen. First we got basic social networks like MySpace and Facebook, then LinkedIn for work, Twitter and Pownce for micro-blogging and mini-updates, and well, at least chronologically, it makes sense: A social network for the dead. Citing the online grieving that occurs on MySpace after someone dies, Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor is launching Tributes.com this June, so that people have a central place for online memorials.
Now, I loved Six Feet Under as much as the next undercover goth girl, but I can't help but think how morbid this is. But, I also get it as this would be a place to blog, post pictures, after someone passes on, and like most things in your life, it had to come online eventually. . . or offline, as the case may be (apologies for the pun).

Attack of the Geeks - Silent Star Wars Movie

2007 is the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars Saga, which means you better gear up for a year of tributes and shout-outs to the geeky phenomenon. My homage to the series? This fantastic silent movie:

On Wednesday, May 25, 1977, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope premiered to the public – and went on to become the top-grossing movie of all time. This year fans will celebrate the series with Celebration IV, a four-day gathering of Star Wars fans from around the world featuring celebrity appearances, special screenings and sneak peeks into some of the goodies Lucasfilm has in store for us. It will take place May 25th to May 28th at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The coming months will see the continuation of the popular (and frequently sold-out) “Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination” museum tour; the release of the first-ever book chronicling the “Making of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope" and the first-ever Star Wars Celebration event in Europe.

Throughout the year, Star Wars action figures will come packaged with 30th-anniversary collector coins. Lucasfilm Animation is in the midst of production of the as-yet-untitled Star Wars animated TV series, working with talented artists and storytellers in California and Singapore to create entirely new adventures.

A Father's Day Tribute

In honor of Father's Day, I wanted to share a touching tribute from a son to his father. Fellow geek Peter Rojas, cofounder and editor-in-chief of Engadget, lost his father Federico Rojas suddenly before Father's Day last year.

His heartwarming story describes memorable moments when he was growing up, like when his dad would bring home the latest electronics, including an Atari 2600 when Peter was home sick from school after having his tonsils removed.

My father instilled me in his love for technology, but the most important things I learned from him have nothing to do with gadgets. Even though he loved gadgets and electronics, he never made them his life; they were just tools to make life easier or more enjoyable and were never a substitute for the friends, family, and patients that he always put first.

Peter's beautiful and memorable tribute to his father makes me grateful every day to have the amazing father I do. In honor of Frederico, who inspired Peter in all of his endeavors, tell your father today and every day just how much you love him and how much he means to you.

Tribute to Apple? Pixelated Apple Cutting Board

Even in the kitchen, I tend to relate actual apples to you know, the Apple. I can't resist it (and neither could Gossip Girl, apparently).

So is this Pixelated Cutting Board from Chiasso, $28, a clever play on the company Apple, considering its namesake fruit is digitally rendered on the board?

Maybe. And maybe I'm just way too into my geek life to see anything else. What do you think?

"Thriller" Themed Headphones Make Your Music Spooky, Scary

I'm all about rocking the big headphones, and although this set isn't exactly my cup of tea, they are commendable nonetheless. These spooky graveyard headphones took one of the top spots at a Nokia design competition in London last week, and will be made and sold at select stores.

Topped with tombstones, grass, zombies and monster heads, the design team of ATOM Creative Solutions based the design on Michael Jackson's "Thriller." It's quite the geeky tribute to the late icon, and if you want to check out these custom and one-of-a-kind cans in person, you'll need to head over to the Nokia flagship store in London.

BillieTweets.com Launches a Twitter Tribute to Michael Jackson

As the world continues to come to grips with the death of Michael Jackson, the loving tributes are starting to pop up.

The geekiest thus far (and my personal favorite) is Billie Tweets, a website that streams Jackson's hit Billie Jean and then matches real-time tweets to it.

So that means that if you're on Twitter and one of your tweets contains a lyric to the song, it may be getting pulled to Billie Tweets right then to complete the song.

It's the ultimate meme - while still managing to be a touching sentiment.

Listen to Michael Jackson Tunes For Free From These Sites

It has already been five days since the sad news about Michael Jackson broke, and although many of us are still in disbelief, millions are remembering the king of pop through his music.

Since Friday, many of Michael's songs have been in the top songs list on iTunes, with "The Essential Michael Jackson" album claiming the number one album spot.

If you want to listen to Michael's music, but don't want to pay any money to do so, there are many sites that stream his music for free. To see what they are, just read more.
