Nov 6 2008 - 10:00am Digital editions of magazines are nothing new, although it feels pretty momentous to hear that prestigious magazine The New Yorker is launching its digital version, with all of the content being made free to its print subscribers.
Here's the thing — I'm a magazine junkie. I subscribe to so many magazines, I can barely get through them all in a month.
I subsribe to only a few, but one I read online before I ever get it is Entertainment Weekly. I usually bring the hard copy to work and give it to someone there.
I like to read magazines in the bathtub, one of my only times I get to myself because I have kids, and I can't take the computer in there with me. I love printed magazines, I hate the idea of
getting them on the computer!
9 times outta 10, i am all for digital. i like to read magazines while on a machine at the gym though, one of the few places i cant have a screen up in front of me.
i'd be pretty bummed if the couple magazines i subscribe to (real simple and cooking light) went digi.
I love reading magazines on airplanes, while on the treadmill at the gym, in the doctor's office, even in the bathtub! Kinda hard to do that with a digital version. Plus, you can't clip cool
pics out of a digital mag.
There is something about the glossy print of magazines that I love. BUT I do read all of my newspapers online - i actually hate when the ink gets on my hands and trying to unfold and refold
them on public transportation is a pain!
I agree with LTrain, just the glossy print is amazing. Plus, I'm the kind of person who makes pointless collages and scrapbooks, and even if you print the magazine ... it's not the same.
I've tried reading magazines online and it drives me crazy because each page takes forever to load I like just being able to flip through at my own pace. Some things are good the way they
are.
As a printmaker, I'm a big fan of print media. I would hate to lose my mags, as environmentally unfriendly as they might be. Plus I get a headache anytime I read online for awhile.
I don't have problems with reading pdf versions but anyhow
I am not so impressed by New Yorker idea of digital edition that I am with an opposite idea that anyone soon could produce and publish his/her own magazine. I lately really feel in love with
magcloud concept, printing magazines on demand, and anyone could be publisher. Service is still in beta so I am waiting for my publisher account, to start my first magazine. I just love shiny
news printed on paper. http://www.magcloud.com/
maybe if there was a color version of the whole magazine in a hand held reader... like kindle or something along those lines. but i love flipping pages not clicking links
Who care if it's "the real world"? Think of how many trees we would be saving just by cutting back on all that paper. I know most people don't recycle theirs mags when done, so I think this
would be a good thing.
Why did you not post my message? It was spot-on the topic of digital magazine and I would have loved to have gotten some feedback from your readers as to what we're doing right, what we're
doing wrong, and where they see the future of digital magazines. While I will agree that there was a degree of self-promotion, it was necessary to move the dialog forward. If your readers
can't see what an easy-to-read digital magazine looks like, how can they possibly determine if it is a viable alternative to an eco-unfriendly print publication.

The novelty about magazines are the excitement of getting them in the mail and being able to flip through the glossy pages. I just couldn't do digital magazines. It wouldn't be the same. I
love being able to throw them in a bag and take them with me, especially when traveling.

1I still print out my PDF files... can't read anything on the screen!

3OH NO WAY
4I agree print magazines would be better because you can take them anywhere with you, can't do that with a computer because not everywhere has wifi.

10I like checking magazines and newspapers online, but I'd never give up having the paper version. It's just much more satisfying to flip through.
