The Sounds Like and Feels Like Bamboo Stereo

I think the idea of nature meeting technology is great. . . wood gadgets, you name it, I'm all for it. However, when I came across this "Bamboo" stereo system on Yanko Design, I couldn't help but ask the what's and why's surrounding this product's inception. Picture a real bamboo stick, its make-up, its sound and try imagining its base features integrated into a stereo system. And in comes the cylindrical "pink" Bamboo stereo. . .This concept design stereo, which has been designed by Soohyuk Im, is through and through high-tech boasting WiFi capability, wireless speakers, an integrated LED screen, remote desktop syncing, a radio and a cd player. The stereo can be used without the connected side speakers or taken apart to have two wireless speakers. It'll be interesting to see if this concept idea ever takes off.

Luxurious Geek: $860,608 Stereo

Have you ever wondered what a stereo that costs about eight times the average college tuition looks like?

This stereo system, which was recently featured at Berlin's IFA trade show, touts a price tag of $860,608. Yes, you read that right.

In the center is a Clearaudio "Statement" turntable (that costs about $137,000), two subwoofers by JBL "Project Everest" (they're about $68,700 a pair) and four Velodyne subwoofers that total $52,000. Of course we can't forget to mention the Krell amps that are worth $163,000, a Mark Levinson pre-amp that costs $54,000 and some miscellaneous obscenely - and pricey - add-ons.

While there is always an air of mystique surrounding luxury gadgets, this set is just another example of how geeks can go terribly wrong creating intricate and painfully expensive devices. No one with $860,608 to burn on a stereo wants it to look like a machine that makes hubcaps. I'm just sayin'.

After I wondered whether 3D might not still be cool, I have a definitive answer: it's hot, hot hot! Not only are the hottest movies coming in 3D, but now it seems like the new thing is to make your own 3D images.

You can use this iPhone app to do so, or you can spring for the
Holga 120-3D Stereo Camera ($120).

Besides looking like a bizarre double-lensed camera for a two-headed alien, it lets you produce your own 3D pics.

Bust out your chicest red and blue glasses and go to town.

Vintage Geek: 'Walky' Head Phone Stereo

These days portable music players are smaller than a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. But, back in 1984, they were roughly a bagillion times larger and of course accepted those cassette tapes you've been thinking of throwing out. The Toshiba 'Walky' Head Stereo, in other words Walkman, is one of my favorite retro chic players - in part because it's pink and because it reminds me of a time when I carried 5 or 6 mix tapes in my purse.

To quote a friend: "I remember a time when the three most important things in my life were my Walkman, New Kids on the Block tape and my acid-washed vest." Yep, sounds about right. Eighties Style Car Stereo: Love It or Leave It?

I have to agree with Gizmodo by saying that this new car stereo by Clarion looks like something aimed at Eighties aerobics teachers with permed and highlighted hair-love it! I guess this CD Player with FM/AM tuner is totally bringing retro back. The DUB275MP may look like an old-school gadget, but it's actually quite high-tech. It works by connecting to your music player via a USB port and also supports bluetooth technology. Not to mention, you can choose from 728 different LED colors that glow around each button. Once they make their debut in Japan later this month, they will cost approximately $295 each. Are you falling in love with it or leaving it alone?

Pet Beat Generation Bag Trumps Non-Pet Bag

If you liked the geek chic lifepod purse we showed you yesterday and you have even slight pet-lover tendencies, you're going to go hog wild at the Beat Generation Stereo Pet Carrier. I have to admit I would have missed it were it not for Techie Diva's Gina Hughes, who admitted even though she doesn't have a dog she kinda wants her own carrier. Is it wrong I share her sentiments?

The pet-carrier was made to groove with any iPod, MP3 player, DVD and even your laptop so you can listen to music or audio books without headphones...and carrying your pooch.
