New Sony Walkmans Coming Next Month

Sony is getting ready to drop two new Walkman devices this Fall - the S Series and the more affordable E Series. The S Series features an FM tuner, a 2.4-inch LCD screen, iTunes, and codec support, and a stellar lithium ion battery, which is said to last 42 hours. It will be priced at $110 for the 8GB and $130 for the 16GB.

Meanwhile, the E-Series has a smaller screen (only two inches), will support a variety of file types (unfortunately not H.264), has a battery life of 10 hours, and will cost $80 for the 8GB model and $100 for the 16GB.

The S Series will be coming in stores this September, while the E440K kit will be available for purchase in October.

Sony Introduces News Walkman Series

Sony has announced the first U.S. Walkman video players that support Windows Media technology and video. The the NWZ-A810 series and NWZ-S610 support security- enhanced Windows Media Audio (WMA), as well as non-secure AAC and MP3 music formats, plus JPEG files for photos, which means more options for downloading and managing music and video collections online. I got to check the players out a few weeks ago and was most impressed with the devices' home screen, which features a standard interface that makes it easy to navigate through the music, video or picture menus.

The video players have a Quarter Video Graphics Array LCD screen that displays video at 30 frames per second. (Quarter Video Graphics Array is a display mode display mode for small screens in which the resolution is 320 pixels vertically by 240 pixels horizontally.) The battery life allows up to eight hours of video playback for the NWZ-A810 series and nine-and-a-half hours for the NWZ-S610 series. The battery also provides up to 33 hours of music playback for both series. Prices range from $120 to $230.

Sony Ericsson Previews Super Slim Walkman Phone

Sony Ericsson has finally released photographs of the rumored new model of the Walkman(R) phone and I must admit, I'm very impressed. The W880 Walkman(R) phone combines the good looks of the hottest thin phones of the day (think Blackberry Pearl and RAZOR) with updated music-centered features of the old-school Walkman.

The W880 will launch within the first half of 2007 when more details will be provided. Overall, it looks like 2007 will be the year of the music phone. Every manufacturer is scramming to make the ultimate MP3 player/phone combo before the competition. I suspect the best of the best will come from a company like Sony, which already has experience with music players.

Play Dress-Up With Sony's New E-Series Walkman MP3 Players

<img width=160 height=119 src='http://media.onsugar.com/files/upl0/1/15111/08_2008/sony's e series walkman_1.large.jpg'>

Sony has spiced up their latest E-Series mp3 players with hip new interchangeable jackets. Choose from a basic black or white models and then personalize it with over twenty different "Style-Up" panels. What's great about these NW-E-series walkman sticks which I spotted on Gizmodo, is the fact that they come with a USB plug that you can directly connect to your laptop or computer for uploading songs.
Sizes and prices include 1GB ($102), 2GB ($121) and 4GB for ($149). Expect to see them make their way to the U.S after their launch in Japan on March 8. Totally cute, but I'm still excited about the fact that the 1GB iPod shuffle only costs $49.

Do People Spend More on Gadgets as They Get Older?

This Friday's USA Today featured a look at the fact that Tech giants target older buyers - and their cash. I understand the move from a market perspective, but I'm not sure people in their 50s and 60s (most notably my parents and their friends) will ever be as in tune or interested in technology as younger generations. Am I being ageist? USA Today reports:

Many 50-plus consumers "have been using personal computers and Sony Walkmans since they were 20 or 25 years old," he says. "They've spent years updating their cellphones, buying MP3 players, installing GPS navigators in their cars and shopping for the latest gadgets."

Combine that tech history with this demographic's colossal size (now more than 91 million) and its trillions in spending power - and it adds up to a massive sales opportunity for tech companies, most of which have not courted older adults before.

What do you think? Do people in their 50s spend more on gadgets than younger people?
Geek Out: What Are You Getting Dad For Father's Day?

It seems to be a universal truth that dads love geeky gifts - from robots, camcorders, speaker systems to plasma screens - there are very few gadgets that any dad I know would turn down. With Father's Day on the horizon, this is the week to start thinking about what you are getting your dad or father figure. He's probably the person who bought you your first Walkman or Discman afterall.

I'm thinking of getting my dad a set of speakers for his desk, or perhaps even a sleek laptop carrier bag (the one he has right now is so boring and generic). I could of course, be persuaded to get him something more exciting. You can help me by finding great gifts you think your dad would like from all across the web, bookmarking them and tagging your finds with "dad." When you bookmark, let me know why you think a dad would like that item.

Then check back to geeksugar this week to see if I featured your bookmarks in my Father's Day gift guide.

To learn what Geek Gear is and how to bookmark your finds on our site, click here.
