Don't Kill the Messenger: Media vs. Literature

If teens have sex in real life, why can't they on television? The question has already been asked, and the answer is usually "because ad revenues say so." But today Robert Thompson, a professor of culture at Syracuse University, pinned TV and film up against books by asking how is Skins different than explicit sex and adult plot lines in literature.

Well, we could end the argument by saying more kids watch TV than read books, and visuals are more seductive than 11-point New Baskerville font, but we won't. Let's ignore that intrusive point on the grounds that kids have access to pretty much every book ever written. Thompson cites the perennial high school freshman read Romeo and Juliet as a tale with a message unfit for 14-year-olds: two kids kill themselves because they can't be together.

Then he moves to the sexually graphic, masturbation fest of a book Portnoy's Complaint, which probably wasn't on your high school reading list. He read it early (and, just a guess, but probably often) and told NPR today it was transformative for him. Read what he said below.

First Look at MTV's Skins: Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll

When I first heard that MTV was adapting the British series Skins for the states, I was somewhat skeptical. How could the network possibly replicate it when nearly every UK scene involves some form of profanity or sex? But after watching the first footage, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that the US version is staying true to its predecessor without seeming too watered-down.

Set to fast-paced music, this trailer hints at several of the original's eyebrow-raising themes (think drugs, drinking, and neighbors in the buff). VHS Heroes Skins: Love 'Em or Leave 'Em?

VHS tapes may be a thing of the past, but it's the format where you'll find all my favorite movies still tucked away in storage. Flicks like Willow, Legend, and The B.R.A.T. Patrol (who's seen this one!?) helped me get off to a good geeky and sci-fi start. If it weren't for laser disk, DVD, and Blu-Ray technology, I'd probably still have a VCR and keep them close by.

Although I can't watch the VHS tapes that were so near and dear, I can pay them respect by slapping these VHS Hero Skins ($15-$20) onto my new-fangled gadgets. American Version of Skins Coming to MTV

If you've ever seen the UK teen series Skins (with Dev Patel!), you know it puts the "scandalous lives" of the Gossip Girl kids to shame with its boundary-pushing scenes and language. Now, somehow MTV will adapt the series for American audiences. Here's more on the US version of the show:

MTV says it will continue the original show's production model using teenagers to help write the series and unknown age-appropriate actors to star. Co-creator Brian Elsley will be writing and executive producing the U.S. version. The producers intend to set the show in Baltimore, Maryland.

Liz Gateley, senior VP, MTV Series Development said, "Having personally pursued the U.K. project for almost two years, I am beyond thrilled to bring it to MTV in the U.S. We intend to preserve the authenticity of the British version and are excited to collaborate with the original team to develop stories that will speak to American youth."

Like so many British shows adapted for American screens, this version will surely be neutered (remember Coupling?) to avoid showing quite so much, well, skin, so it makes me wonder how this series will ultimately differ from other teen shows already on American TV. The idea of using young writers and unknown actors is encouraging, though. Are you a fan of the UK series? Could you see an American version working on MTV?

Protect Your iPhone From Scratches With a Layer of Skin

When I came across the Infectious website (the name is oddly fitting) - which is packed with skins for your iPods, iPhones, and laptops - it took me a while to peel my eyes away from all the cool artist eye candy. I've already covered my laptop with a skin, so I guess it's only appropriate to slap a skin on my iPhone as well. Keeping your gadget safe from scratches, these skins are not only functional but are pretty easy on the eyes, like this Lomo-esque print I wouldn't expect to see on an iPhone.

For about $15 each, your phone will stand out among all the bulky and clunky cases in the crowd. Obviously, I couldn't pick my favorite, so I've rounded up a selection for you to browse through -maybe someday I'll actually settle on one!
