Oscar Worthy Gadgets: Milk's Cameras

Nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor for Sean Penn in the title role, Milk is the moving story of San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor Harvey Milk. After moving to the Bay Area, Harvey Milk opens up a camera repair shop - the real life Castro Camera.

Of course, the shop wasn't used as just a repair shop for long; it would become the heart of Milk's political career - first as a gathering place, then his campaign headquarters. It did keep operating, and as we see in the movie, provided comical fodder in the form of peeking at customers' developed film.

The real Castro Camera is now a gift shop, and fun fact - I watched the movie at the legendary Castro theater, on the same block as the old shop; though it's no longer the camera shop, what was once a tiny epicenter of a community has spread out from it, into a neighborhood, a city, and continues on, as part of Harvey's legacy.

Ex Text: Do You Have an Electronic Relationship With Exes?

Newly single Madonna was recently spotted having drinks with her ex-husband Sean Penn (not that ex, her ex ex!), and what's more - they're text buddies.

I personally don't keep up with my exes via Facebook, phone calls, or texting, but I have many friends (usually the currently single ones) who have added each other as friends on Facebook and MySpace and keep in contact that way.

Whether they're playing with fire, completely and utterly mature, or just think that electronic relationships aren't the same as regular friendships, I think it says a lot about you.

How do you feel about exes and Facebook, MySpace, texting, or any other kind of tech communication? Kosher or not kosher? Facebook friends until one of you is coupled?

Vintage Geek: Original Macintosh User Manual

There are very few things geekier than user manuals: They house loads of secrets, tips and tricks that techie freaks like myself pride ourselves on knowing. But what do old manuals say about a company like Apple, which has rose to iconic status since the release of its first official manual? A man named Peter Merholz recently purchased an original Macintosh user manual from eBay and posted the pages online for the whole world to reminisce and drool over. I hate to break it to Justin Long, but the original "Mac" guys were pretty dreamy in a smart surfer boy meets Sean Penn kind of way. "It’s been an intriguing read," says Peter. "It’s a remarkably handsome manual, beautifully typeset, which, considering par for the course at the time was probably Courier with few illustrations, is saying something."
