Stephen Colbert Replaces His $310,000 Vertu With an iPhone

Oh man, if you missed The Colbert Report the other night, I've got to fill you in on the details about this hilarious segment. Stephen started talking about Milton Pedraza, the CEO of the "Luxury Institute," who recommends a strategy of "stealth wealth" and "avoiding conspicuous consumption for a less flashy image" during this economic crisis. Stephen then goes on to say that he took Milton's advice of forgetting $10,000 mobile phones and picking up iPhones instead, so he decided to trade in his $310,000 Vertu cell phone for an iPhone and a land line (keep your eyes peeled for his blinged-out rotary phone!). Ha ha Stephen, you woo us again with your antics.

Telephone Pillow: Love It or Leave It?

Big ups to the vintage telephone revival! Typewriters and Polaroids are hot, and now so are corded telephones, too. Case in point: the Telephone Pillow ($34) from Urban Outfitters.

West Elm had a similarly geek-inspired telephone pillow last year - it's like as everyone ditches their landlines left and square, the old-school rotary gains in popularity. But are we far enough away from the home phone to be nostalgic about it? Would you toss this on your chair?

Unlike Oprah who has already signed up for both a Facebook and Twitter account in the past month, actress Drew Barrymore - who admits she's confused by technology in dating - told Kelly Ripa and her husband Mark on Live With Regis and Kelly that she stays clear of both social networking sites. Although admitting that she appreciates technology and the convenience of it, she doesn't know what "Twittering" is and doesn't care to know. Check out the clip below.

I have been semi-obsessed with oversized, clunky and illogical camera phones ever since I saw the "Mugged" episode of Flight of the Conchords where Jemaine's handmade camera phone (it's literally a camera and phone taped together) gets taken by a street thug. This Canon camera phone is even more fantastic because it combines a spectacular camera with a rotary phone base. Cause everyone needs a rotary phone that can capture images within cord distance, right?

Kelly Ripa Swears by Her iPhone

Yesterday on Live with Regis and Kelly, Kelly couldn't help but fill Regis in on a little secret - that her iPhone is her personal weatherman - all at the touch of a button. She then attempts to sell good ol' Regis on the user-friendly Apple device that's easy for "technologically challenged" people to use. It's a cute clip with Regis admitting that he wishes people would just go back to using rotary phones - the "safe" way to do it, he says. What do you think? Is simpler always better?

How Much Would You Spend On A Retro Phone?

I recently read an article on CrunchGear exposing a website called Frill Free Phones, which sells rotary phones for upwards of $100! This got me thinking... if people are willing to drop $600 for the iPhone which comes fully-equipped with plenty of bells and whistles, why would anyone in their right mind spend over $100 for an old-fashioned phone that doesn't even have call display! Do tell...what's all the fuss about retro telephones? Do they bring sexyback in a way I don't understand? Or is it because they are antiques? Let me know below how much you would spend on an old-school phone!

Luxurious Geek: Bang & Olufsen Serene Mobile

The other night I was at a birthday dinner with my family and one of our friends whipped out her new Bang & Olufsen Serene Mobile. First and foremost, it's breathtaking. It's one of those phones that has its share of the usual features (SMS, MMS from the built-in camera, and email), but looks more like a piece of art.

It features a curved drop-shaped shell and soft-touch surface. When opened, the lower shell has a screen and the upper shell features a rotary-inspired keyboard. I was most shocked by how it's controlled. You just tap on the top of the shell and it opens like a slow car trunk. (Or, as they put it "opening and closing Serene involves a gentle move with your finger, which triggers a built-in motor so the shell opens slowly and gracefully.) It doesn't seem practical for e-mail or web access - mostly because it's so small - but it sure is beautiful.

The phone is compatible with TMobile & Cingular, but at $1,275 it's more than twice the cost of the iPhone.

When I asked readers how much they would spend on a retro phone, I was surprised to learn that a majority of you would not spend your money on old-fashioned gadgets.
