Public Domain: Cute Geeky Tee Shirts

When it comes to geek gear there are many varieties: Video gamer shirts, programmer shirts, swag bags, backpacks and tees...the list seems endless. However, while there seems to be no end of geeky tee shirts, it can sometimes be hard to find great shirts for girls because the guys seem to have claimed all the greatest vintage and video-game inspired designs. In fact, finding a medium between Hello Kitty, Atari, and code humor can be near impossible. But not impossible.

Public Domain has some adorable polaroid, joystick, brick phone mega and calculator watch-inspired tee shirts that more than live up to the needs of any chic girl or guy. They are all $25.

First of all, join the Geeky Things I Love
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this post was "museum, Lego")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

Security Tips For Data Privacy Day!

It's Data Privacy Day, so we're here to give you 10 tips to keeping your computer safe, secure, and totally private. Nothing is worse than having your computer hacked into, your personal information stolen, or becoming a victim of fraud. We've rounded up all of our best tech advice to help keep your computer protected and free from hacker malice. If you haven't implemented these 10 tidbits yet, today is the perfect day to begin to take charge of your computer's safety.

Avoid fraud: Be wary of emails, calls, and log-in screens that ask you to verify all of your information. Always air on the side of precaution when sharing more sensitive information like banking passwords. If a company reaches out to you (rather than you personally reaching out to them), don't give your personal information out. Redial the number or email the company using the information posted on their website.
Set up a hack-proof password: When logging in to websites, come up with difficult and different passwords for each site, using a variety of letters, numbers, and symbols. Change it every couple of months for additional safety.
Double-check your firewall: Most computers have a built-in firewall that protects your computer by stopping hackers and malicious software from accessing your computer via the Internet. Make sure to keep your firewall setting on, and you could even customize what websites, domains, and IP addresses you want to access from your computer.
Forget about free public WiFi: Hackers often create fake networks, titling them "Free Public WiFi" in hopes of stealing your personal data. Even if the WiFi is legit, it's still dangerous to access private information in an unsecured network. Always opt to pay the small fee for a service that requires you to log-in to an official network.
Safely search for celebrities: Googling your favorite celebrities can be a dangerous business if you don't recognize the sites you are clicking on. Many Google results of famous celebrity names lead to infecting your PC with malware and viruses.

On a Roll: A House Built For Skateboarding

I'm excited to present a post from one of my favorite sites, ShelterPop!

After reading about former pro-skater Pierre-André Senizergues's fully-skateable house in the New York Times, we had to take a closer look.

"Skating has a strong relation with architecture," architect Francois Perrin told the Times. "[Skateboarders] adapt themselves to public space and outdoor furniture. A skater, when he goes around the city trying to find the right space and surface, he really looks at architecture with a different eye than someone that's walking around. It's a more fluid approach. So this idea of people skating in a house has been the dream of many generations of skaters."

Dubbed PAS House (after the owner's initials), the residence features a ribbon of continuous surface that integrates much of the furniture, including a sitting area, kitchen and bathroom. Stand-alone objects, such as a dining table, kitchen Island and bed also bear skate-friendly surfaces (and visitors can enter the house via a ramp). A full-scale prototype of the construction was presented at "Public Domaine," an exhibit on skate culture currently on view in Paris; the final version will be built in Malibu, California.

Do You Care About Design Piracy?

There's nothing wrong with indulging in a few designer-inspired items every once in awhile, but is it OK to buy a blatant designer knockoff? We think not, and designers, like Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, are looking to protect themselves in such situations with the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act. “The fashion industry is already a tough business, and it is getting tougher because of piracy,” said Hernandez on behalf of the CFDA, further noting that Proenza Schouler spends about $3.8 million a year to produce its collections and $320,000 to produce a fashion show.

If passed, the bill would cover “deliberate copies that are substantially identical to the protected designs” and would provide protection to designers for three years. “Our designs are born in our imagination. We create something from nothing at all,” said Hernandez. “By far the majority of apparel is based on garments already in the public domain. Nothing about the proposed legislation will change that. Nobody will ever be able to claim ownership of the t-shirt or pencil skirt. This bill is intended to protect only those designs that are truly original.” Tell us, do you care about design piracy, or is it all about getting a designer look for less?
