Today is March 14, 3.14, or Pi Day! Since many people celebrate the mathematical holiday, I thought it was an appropriate time to round up our best pie recipes. From pizzas to sweet treats, there's something for everyone, so decide what kind of pie you want to make now.

Do you know what day it is? Mar. 14 is National Pi Day - not only does 3/14 correspond to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter (3.1415926535. . .), but it gives us geeks another excuse to party! Are you in?

This Sunday isn't just daylight savings; it also marks the end of British Pie Week, and just so happens to be 3.14, or Pi Day! Yep, 3/14 corresponds to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter (3.1415926535. . .).

March 14th is Pi Day, since 3/14 is the closest you'll get to the mathematical constant π (roughly 3.14).

I think I'll celebrate with a piece of pie at 1:59 p.m. - Pi Minute- as π reduced to five decimal places becomes 3.14159.

It's March 14, better known as 3.14, or Pi Day. I wish it was pie day, but we'll take what we can get.

My gal geeksugar has rounded up a load of Pi Day paraphernalia, however I've found a few treats to inspire you in the kitchen. So for those of you geeky enough to get it, I present to you the Pi Pie. Created by Flickr member megpi, this awesome pie has the pi symbol cut into the middle and the numbers going around the outside. It's so clever, I'm bummed I didn't come up with myself!

The only thing that would make this pie better is if it was served in this Pi Dish ($24.95). This pi dish is trimmed with the first few dozen digits of pi, and would make any geeky baker's day.

While searching for fun Pi Day things, I also came across this Pi Cookie Cutter ($12.95). Although it's for cookies, and not pies, I still think that it's pretty fun. You could even use it on pastry crust to create embellishments for your pie, or cut out two and make a pocket pie! Either way, I'm sure you'll get more than 3.14159 uses out of it!

Other than some kind of push to get people interested in math, I don't know we need a National Π Day, but we have it. And, at least, the day is well chosen: March 14 (or 3/14) for the 3.14 the Greek letter represents in math. Though it may just be something we learn in prealgebra, fascination over the symbol is dotted throughout pop culture. Why pi though?

In its simplest sense, pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. For most of us, it never meant anything more than plugging 3.14 into math problems, but to mathematicians the number is mind-boggling because its decimal points extend to infinity. Since there are, mercifully, few unknowns in math, the sign has become synonymous with mystery, crossing over from math and science to pop culture. To see how, keep reading.
