Mastering Close Range Flash: Overexposure Part 1

Proper exposure is crucial for making great digital pics as overexposure makes your pictures too bright and facial features are lost in the bright flash. Meanwhile, underexposure leaves your pictures dark and devoid of recognizable objects. While a full lesson of this subject matter could fill an entire textbook, you should start by taking control of three basic camera items: flash, exposure setting, and ISO setting.

The first step in preventing overexposure in close range photos is to take a few sample pics in the given environment with flash off, as this will let you see if ambient lighting is sufficient for good pictures. Just using ambient light will make your pictures come out as they appear to the naked eye. However, if the pictures are too dark then turn your flash back on and take another test picture.

Generally, most new cameras have very bright flashes and at close range cause overexposure (i.e. people's faces will be very white and won't have any detail). You can counteract this problem by lowering your exposure setting (how to depends on the model). This will reduce the amount of light the camera will accept and keep your pictures full of detail and color.

Did You Get Sunburned This Memorial Day Weekend?

Did you know that last Friday was "Don't Fry Day"? Created by health experts, the Friday leading into Memorial Day weekend has been dubbed this punny name to raise awareness about the hazards related to overexposure to sunlight, since the three-day weekend marks the "unofficial beginning of Summer."

The main cause of skin cancer is overexposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. And according to Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Air and Radiation, "Many people still do not realize that unprotected sun exposure can lead to skin cancer and other health problems." Skin cancer affects more than two million Americans each year. That's more than breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers combined, says the EPA.

Knowledge is power so brush up on the four warning signs of skin cancer, and also note that the use of tanning beds before the age of 30 can increase your risk of skin cancer by 75 percent.

To protect yourself from harmful UV rays, you should try to stay out of direct sunlight during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; cover up by wearing hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved-shirts; wear sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher; and stay in a shaded spot or take an umbrella with you to the beach. And if you do happen to get burned, in the latest issue of The Oprah Magazine, Dr. Oz says you can sponge your burn with cooled chamomile tea, since it contains great anti-inflammatory properties.

Julia Roberts Reflects on Fame and Bad Advice in Vanity Fair

Julia Roberts covers Vanity Fair's brand-new April issue. She chatted up her forthcoming movie Mirror Mirror, which will be out on March 30. The film pairs Julia with up-and-coming actress Lily Collins, as well as Armie Hammer. However, the business of moviemaking is a different one for Lily, as Julia tells writer Sam Kashner. Julia reflected on how tough it is for people just starting out, avoiding overexposure, and managing to keep her kids unaware of her fame. Julia told the magazine:

On her kids not knowing she's famous: "[Once] on a crowded street, and somebody noticed me, and then another person noticed. Somebody said as we were walking past, 'Oh, that's Julia Roberts.' We all just kind of kept going, and then Finn said, 'Yeah, my mom's Julia Robinson.' That's what gives you perspective. It could be Robinson, it could be Johnson, because it has nothing to do with me as a person."

On not taking bad advice: "[There was] a time when I was encouraged - as all young actresses are - you know, 'You’ve got to keep going; you've got to get out there.'"

On how Hollywood has changed since she started: "The business is so different; you can never be that new girl that has that moment of 'Where’d she come from?'" she says. "There's the express elevator and there's rehab. It's so awful; nobody gets a fair trial-and-error period that everybody deserves and everybody needs."

Sex and the City Charged With Ruining Sex For the World

Sex used to be mysterious; sex also used to be taboo. But now sex writer Karen Krizanovich says it's not even sexy anymore. Overexposure in pop culture has made the formerly forbidden act at best pleasant, on average banal, and at worst political.

While sex's overexposure can be traced back much farther than Sex and the City, Krizanovich says the show was the tipping point. They didn't just have sex, they also talked about it from every angle imaginable. To prove her point, she cites an unembarrassed Samantha lecturing onlookers at a Middle Eastern market about sexual liberation after condoms spill out of her purse, but I feel pretty secure saying nobody in real life would ever do that.

Maybe sex has lost some of its seduction - a byproduct of the sexual revolution, but that's also just a natural evolution. Just like we can't blame pop culture for single acts of violence, we can't hold it responsible for bad sex lives.

Shine:

What is this now? An acute Wi-Fi allergy is plaguing five percent of Americans? EHS, or Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity, is a condition defined by headaches, muscle spasms, burning skin and chronic pain.

The cause: over-exposure to mobile phones, wireless internet and the satellites and cell phone towers that keep them pumping.

One sufferer, Diane Schou, described her symptoms to the BBC this way: "My face turns red, I get a headache, my vision changes, and it hurts to think. Last time [I was exposed] I started getting chest pains - and to me that's becoming life-threatening."

To alleviate her discomfort, her husband built her "radio-wave resistant" wooden cage lined in wire mesh to sleep in. When that didn't work, she moved from her Iowa farmhouse to Green Bank, West Virginia. Population 143.

For 13,000 square miles around the town wireless networks are obsolete. The Radio Quiet Zone was originally designed for scientific research, but it's becoming a haven for EHS refugees.

Forget the Fountain of Youth, the Secret Is in Your Diet

There's probably no better road map to aging than the face. A wrinkle here, a sunspot there - all signs that we're growing up. Let's be real; there's no magic cure for wrinkles and the other effects of aging, but there are preventive measures to take that don't involve fancy creams or weekly visits to the esthetician. Wrinkles, dry skin, and sun spots, all common signs of aging; find out which foods will stop them dead in their tracks. The fountain of youth is just a meal away.

Wrinkles

If someone mentioned that smiling left such an (ever) lasting impression, some of us may have been a little more selective with what we found funny. It seems that no matter what age you are when it happens, wrinkles still have the ability to make you feel, well, old. Keep in mind, aging isn't the only thing that causes wrinkles: smoking, sun damage, and all that squinting, smiling, and frowning also contribute to those little - and sometimes, not-so-little - lines that find a home on our face.
Preventative Foods: Vitamin C serums are huge in the skincare world as a good line of defense against wrinkles. They also come with a hefty price tag. Guess what? Science says, an orange a day keeps the wrinkles away! A study showed that participants who ate a diet high in vitamin C and linoleic acid were less prone to wrinkles. While we're talking fruit, you may want to up your berry intake, too. The antioxidant powerhouses are key in <a href"http://www.fitsugar.com/Eat-Foods-Healthy-Skin-7091460?page=0,0,2#6">keeping skin free of environmental stress that help contribute to aging.

5 Reasons to Wear Sunglasses

We're finally enjoying some warm, sunny weather here in San Francisco, but even when it's not Summer or incredibly sunny, sunglasses are a must-have accessory for your health. Here are five reasons you should absolutely wear sunglasses.

Avoiding sunburn. It is possible to sunburn your eyes, resulting in redness, irritation, and a gritty feeling similar to sand in the eyes. Ouch!

Maintaining long-term eye health. Overexposure to UV rays can lead to cataracts and glaucoma. Choose sunglasses that screen out 75 to 90 percent of light and block at least 95 percent of UVA and 99 percent UVB radiation. Wearing a hat doesn't hurt either.

For three more reasons to get shady,

Preventing wrinkles. Sunglasses keep you from squinting, and squinting can increase the wrinkles around your eyes .

Avoiding skin cancer. Sunglasses shield you from potential skin cancer of the eyelids. Just remember, the sun is even stronger in early morning and late afternoon.

Looking cool. Do you really need another reason?
