Hot Gadget Predictions For 2008

Wondering what's going to be hot and not-so-hot in the upcoming year? Here are some of my gadget predictions for 2008!

OLED Televisions: Surprisingly OLED TV's weren't overly popular in 2007, even though they created quite the buzz with their super-slim design, energy saving technology, and exceptional screen quality. I can't help but think they are going to make a huge comeback in '08. Be sure to stay tuned for Samsung's latest prototype, a 31-inch OLED TV.

More Sleek and Stylish Storage Devices: For those of us who carry our portable storage devices on us 24/7, keep your eyes peeled for some fun new USB flash drives in '08. Check out these new flash drives from PQI called the Traveling Disk i201 which come in strawberry, pink, banana yellow, and blueberry blue colors. Storage capacity ranges from 1GB to 4GB.

Portable Media Players: Now that downloading movies off the net has become so quick and easy, more and more people will be investing in portable media players. Philips new flash based personal media player is fresh on the scene and is going to be a hot buy. With 2, 4 or 8GB capacities, a 3.5" LCD display, built-in speakers, and a five hour video life, you can't help but wish you got one for Christmas!

Fashionable and Functional Gadget Accessories: Gel cell phone cases became a growing trend towards the end of '07, so I'm sure we'll see more colors and designs in '08. With the debut of Kodak's chic new camera cases which were also a hit, you're guaranteed to see alot more custom-designed carrying cases for electronics throughout the year.

eReaders: With the release of Amazon's Wireless Reading Device, the Kindle last November, I couldn't help but get absorbed into the eReader frenzy. These handy devices are simple to use, lightweight and can hold over 200 book titles. . .It's time to say good-bye to our paperbacks and hello to the world of electronic-paper in 2008!

Regis Philbin Puts an iPhone on His Holiday Wish List

Well well well. Back in early 2008, Kelly Ripa tried to get Regis Philbin to join the iPhone club, but he just wouldn't budge. And after almost two years of confessing her love for her iPhone, good ole' Regis has finally decided it's time to ask Santa for an iPhone - which he says he wants to fill with "thousands of apps." I think once he gets the hang of the iPhone, he'll love it. I mean, the guy does know what a search engine is, so maybe he isn't a total Luddite after all? Regardless, just listening to the adorable duo banter back and forth about tech is pretty priceless.

The Bright and Sassy OLED Digital Picture Frame From Kodak

At CES this week, Kodak showed off its 7.6-inch OLED digital picture frame that can store up to 10,000 photos on 2GB of internal memory. Usually I don't go ga ga over digital picture frames - I feel they are best suited for parents or grandparents - but I can't help but take notice at the plethora of functions this model has. With WiFi that can connect to RSS feeds, Flickr, and Kodak Gallery accounts, and you can access the news, weather and sports. It also comes with a quick touch border and a 180-degree viewing angle, this is far more than a digital frame.

This OLED frame was on sale on Amazon for $999, but is currently out of stock, but I'd keep checking back if you've got some really rich relatives that are on the lookout for one.

Sony Gets Skinny With The OLED TV

At CES 2007, the Gizmodo team had the chance to spot Sony's gorgeous new OLED TV (OLED meaning organic light-emitting diode). This prototype TV is ultra skinny, measures 27 inches, and projects beautiful sharp quality images. OLED technology is neat because it doesn't require any backlighting, which will save your energy and your money! These sleek new TVs are still in the making and should be on store shelves fairly soon.

CES 2008: In Awe of eMagin's OLED Microdisplay Headset

Before you start laughing, I'll admit that eMagin's SVGA 3DS OLED-XL microdisplay headsets aren't particularly sexy, but who needs glamorous gear when you've got extraordinary pieces of technology right before your eyes?! With this microdisplay you get both analog- and digital-signal process in a tiny compact display, therefore eliminating the need for an external television screen.
When I tested out the OLED microdisplay, it was connected to a Dreamaz Indicube personal media player, which allowed me to watch videos on a virtual screen size equivalent to 52 incheds by 2 meters! A great invention for those who would like to experience their videos from their iPod on a larger (portable) screen in complete privacy. The company plans to start shipping headsets in March.

Do You Have a Flat Screen TV Yet?

I remember looking at my old tube TV and thinking what a sad, old, honkin' piece of old technology it was. Like Richard Simmons, I wanted to drop the unneeded bulk and upgrade to the skinny model: The Flat Screen. I eventually did it, with a 50-inch Sony that's all I dreamed it could be.

I'm not the only flat screen enthusiast - Martha Stewart, all-important doyenne of aesthetics, recently gave the new Sony OLEDs a rave review: "I like it." With an endorsement like that it's no wonder that flat screens are making a splash as decor, and let's face it, it's the shape of the future and we'll all have flatties eventually. Do you have yours yet?

Turn Your Pics Into a Music Video With Animoto

I love iPhoto's slideshow feature, but if you aren't a Mac fan (or even if you are), and want a fresh, simple, and quick way to put some music to your pics, check out Animoto.

Animoto is different from a regular slideshow, since the program does all the work for you. It analyzes your photos you upload (via your computer, Flickr, or another photo-sharing website) and your music choice, then creates a custom slideshow (or more appropriately, music video) for your pics. This is not just the same ole boring fade-in, fade-out slideshow you're used to - this site uses some sweet touches and effects to keep things exciting. But more than just an attention-getting slideshow, the best part is that it's free (there's a fee if you want to create longer videos).

WWDC Highlights: No (Wo)Man's Land

Although I feel right at home surrounded by gadgets and technology, attending the WWDC made me realize that I was walking into a man's world. Making my way to the West Hall of the Moscone Center, I could see that the line outside was 99 percent XY chromosome, and only a spattering of ladies braved the gaggle of geeks alone.

Even though I was outnumbered, I could still find joy in the little things that happen when you get this many geeks together in one place. For example, one of my favorite moments of the day took place after all the big announcements in the keynote had come and gone, and I made my way to the restrooms. Yes, just like at MacWorld, there was a big line for the men's room, and crickets coming from the women's restroom. These are the times we cherish, am I right ladies?

But among all the fun, there were some blatantly obvious signs that this event was more male-focused than not. To find out what they were, just read more.

As I made my way to registration before the keynote, I saw these girls. Not exactly "Booth Babes," not quite swimsuit models, but they did serve a purpose. They were pimping a new app called iPorn. I guess you could call them iPorn Girls?

After the keynote, as I was trying to find a place to plug in my Macbook Pro, I heard an extremely loud belch coming from a group of classy males to my right. After attempting to give the 'ole stinkeye, not one of the dudes posting it up along the wall would make eye contact. That's right guys, not in public.

Microsoft Announces the Zune HD: Coming This Fall

Zune fans rejoice! The multitouch Zune HD has just been announced by Microsoft and is said to be coming to store shelves this Fall. This new portable media device will sport a 3.3-inch, OLED touchscreen display, be able to play high-def videos, and will feature a built-in HD receiver so you can listen to HD radio. It will also come with WiFi, Xbox integration, and include a customizable Internet Explorer web browser. Microsoft has also revealed that they will showcase how the Zune works with Xbox LIVE at E3 next week, which should be interesting. Unfortunately details like price, colors, etc., weren't announced.

CES '09 Recap!

Hey, in case you missed it, the Super Bowl(s) of the geek world took place last week here in San Francisco and Las Vegas: Macworld and CES! We saw lots of hot products (and a few unbelievable ones) being unveiled this year, and personally, I'm anxious to get my hands on a few of these beauties.
