YouTube Highlights a Year in Video

On Wednesday eve, when most of you were probably ringing in the New Year with champagne and noisemakers, YouTube was showcasing 24 of their highest-rated and most memorable videos of 2008. If you've got some time to spare, it's quite entertaining to see the videos that made the cut. In the meantime, here are four of my favorite to hold you over!

If you've been following our Best of 2008 Polls and Results Roundups, then you'll know that 2008 didn't let us down in terms of new gadgets, tech news stories, iPhone goodies, video games, TV and movie tech, and neat new online tools. For the second year in a row, Apple surpassed the rest in terms of hot new products, newsworthy stories and all the Steve Jobs coverage, which managed to keep us on our toes.

A big thank you for a memorable 2008, and I look forward to yet another exciting year! Wishing you health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in '09!

Geek Party Tip: Count Down to the New Year on Your Monitor

If you're having a New Year's Eve party tonight and will have a computer monitor in view, then download this free 3D New Year's Countdown.

When it comes, confetti will fall and "Auld Lang Syne" will play. Post New Year's Day, the screen saver countdown starts over (which I love, because NYE is my favorite holiday).

People to Power Times Square New Year's Party

The spectacular Times Square New Year's Eve celebration is already going to be that much more entertaining this year with the bigger Times Square LED-covered ball, and now Duracell has announced that they will power the ball with batteries charged by people.

They've recently built a "power lodge" in Times Square, which features rows of bicycles with generators that are connected to massive batteries. Visitors are able to take part in the pedal power that will provide enough power for the batteries to last 10 to 15 minutes during the live show. In total, Duracell is expecting 230 hours of visitor participation to reach their power goal by Dec. 31. Talk about going big and eco-chic!

Times Square New Year's Eve Ball to Be Bigger Than Ever

Get ready, get set, because this year's New Year's Eve in Times Square is going to be bigger and better than last year.

How? Well the signature Times Square ball, will be twice as big as previous years, being covered in more than 2,668 Waterford Crystals.

And not only that, but it will be powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDS, giving it that picture-perfect colorful kaleidoscope effect. Too bad I won't be in NYC for the festivities!

Did You Send Out a New Year's Text Message?

Every New Year, I usually make a point to send all my friends a "Happy New Year" text message. Maybe I was having too much fun when the clock struck 12 because I completely forgot to get my phone out and send a single text message. My friend on the other hand, woke up the next morning to realize that she had sent out a mass text to hundreds of her friends. I'm sure she'll be overjoyed when her phone bill arrives at the end of this month!

According to Valleywag, millions of text messages were sent simultaneously at midnight on New Year's. Many arrived, many didn't, and many were delayed. I'm curious to know whether or not you are a New Year's texter? . . . Scroll down to leave your answer!

Capturing New Years

Did you manage to flaunt your digital camera as much as Seal did this New Year's Eve? I doubt it! Seal and Heidi Klum were just a few of the celebrities who rang in the New Year in style when the couple hosted a private party at the Aspen Peak Annual New Year's Eve 2007 bash and by the looks of it, made sure to capture every moment with some quality pictures.

Don't have any News Year's Eve plans yet? Nokia announced MSN as the exclusive online distributor of the highly-anticipated Nokia New Year's Eve, a global music celebration which will take place in five party capitals of the world on December 31st.

Exclusive performances from international artists including the Black Eyed Peas, Scissor Sisters, Nelly Furtado, John Legend, and Atomic Kitten will be streamed live and on demand at no cost to viewers through a Nokia-branded experience at NokiaNewYearsEve.com.

Nokia New Year's Eve will bring viewers on a journey from east to west; starting in Hong Kong's Harbor City Ocean Terminal, followed by Mumbai's Andheri Stadium, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro and rounding off the night in New York. Each venue will feature a line-up of local and international musicians.

Other Nokia New Year's Eve content, including artist lists and updates, will also be available through Windows Live Messenger beginning today. After wrapping-up our best of 2007 polls, I've realized that the past twelve months have been filled with incredible new devices, websites, applications, video games and software. Apple proved to be the ultimate mover and shaker in the tech industry with the innovative iPhone, Apple TV, the new MacBook Pro, the widescreen Nano, and the iPod Touch. . .Let's just hope Steve Jobs had a rockin' party last night to match his rockin' year! Hopefully, you were able to catch The Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop last night on TV or in person. This year, the world-famous event went green as the ball was covered with 672 Waterford crystal triangles and 9,576 state-of-the-art LED bulbs. The new and improved ball was twice as bright as last year's, creating more than sixteen million colors for a muti-colored masterpiece. Here's to a healthy, happy and exciting 2008!
