geeksugar Chats With MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe

Just two months shy of geeking out with Samantha Ronson at the TechCrunch50/MySpace Party, I found myself at another fabulous MySpace party last night at the beautiful Old Mint building in San Francisco - hello?! Lionel Richie performed! This time, it was a MySpace 2.0 party celebrating MySpace Music and the latest partnership between Ashton Kutcher's production company, Katalyst Media, and MySpace. The second season of Kutcher's web series Blah Girls is expected to debut on MySpace early next year - in addition to all previous episodes from season one.

Last night PopSugar caught up with Ashton to chat about how his step-daughters played a role in creating his new web animation series Blah Girls, and I got the chance to talk with MySpace CEO about MySpace Music and what else we can expect from MySpace in the next year. Here's what he had to say:

On MySpace Music: "We've gotten a lot done in the last year. Obviously MySpace music is one of the biggest ventures that we've done. We have a new profile type that we're rolling out really soon where you can customize your profile and have any kind of background you want and that will be really cool. Complete redesign - and in addition to that we'll be adding nearly every mobile feature - a lot of exciting stuff."
On what the redesign will entail: "More music and then tons of videos and then more functionality around the music where you'll be able to take it with you."

You know Twitter has made it to the big leagues when a music video essentially dedicated to the microblogging networking site gets MTV airtime. I got a real chuckle when I tuned in and saw Mistah F.A.B. rhyming about his followers and the lovely ladies he plans to "hit up" on Twitter. Here's a snip it of the song's juicy lyrics:

First it was Black Planet, then MySpace, then Facebook took over my place, whoa, now I'm stuck on Twitter.

It has already been five days since the sad news about Michael Jackson broke, and although many of us are still in disbelief, millions are remembering the king of pop through his music.

Since Friday, many of Michael's songs have been in the top songs list on iTunes, with "The Essential Michael Jackson" album claiming the number one album spot.

If you want to listen to Michael's music, but don't want to pay any money to do so, there are many sites that stream his music for free. To see what they are, just read more.

Michael Jackson MySpace Page: Here you'll find an entire tribute page honoring Michael, with some of his most famous songs playing in a handy pop-out player.
last.fm: If you have your own account, add songs directly to your library. Or you can scroll down on this page to instantly play some of Michael's top tracks. The sound quality is very impressive.
Napster: Just click on the play symbol by any of MJ's songs to start rocking out. Quality isn't as great as other sites, but all the classics are there for your enjoyment.
Grooveshark: To get started, search for Michael's name in the search bar and then once the results are shown, scroll over the song title and click the play symbol. Song quality is exceptional.

Tech Dating 101: How Not to Virtually Stalk Him

One of my favorite scenes in He's Just Not That Into You is when Gigi and Janine are at a bar, and Gigi tears up a guy's business card for not being clear about if he actually wanted to call her. It's a lightbulb moment, since previously she had been staring at her phone non-stop and checking her voicemail every five minutes. We've probably all been there at some point in our lives, but now it's even easier to find out about people on the Internet. With MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and a number of other social networking sites, you can see where people are, what kind of food they like to eat, and what kind of music they are into with just a few clicks. Now that I say that, it's actually kind of scary, right?

And if you're just starting to date someone, it can be very tempting to Google his name and start checking his Twitter feeds every hour to see what he has been doing. But please, resist the urge my friends. If you already know everything about a person after only a few dates, what kind of revelations and cool facts will you uncover when you're actually in the same room? I've put together a list of things you shouldn't do in the early stages of a dating relationship, so you can make the most of your time together, and generally not come off like a creepy online stalker. Stay far, far away from 123 People.
Don't friend him on Facebook until there's an intro. Like one of you asks, "Hey, so are you on Facebook?"
Definitely don't follow him on Twitter (or secretly follow him on Tweetstalk) unless you've exchanged Twitter names.
Don't assign him a speed dial until the relationship is on solid ground.
Don't call and hang up. You should know this by now.
Don't Google Street View his address and try to guess which apartment is his.
Don't bookmark or loiter around his Flicker photo stream.
Don't friend him on Loopt until you're in an established relationship, or have decided to just be friends. This would be creepy.

Would You Get a MySpace Credit Card?

What's in your wallet? Could be a credit card with your social network on it, if you so please.

CitiBank has collaborated with MySpace to offer a credit card that will have a rewards program with things like access to MySpace events and free music downloads.

My days of decisions to apply for a fun rewards credit card are pretty much over; on that note, the age range that this is probably meant for is that of kids who still primarily use MySpace.

I have fun on my social networks and all, but I don't think I'll be combining that with my financial life anytime soon. What about you?

Have You Discovered Any Bands Online?

The last few years in tech have ushered in music revolutions - we've seen physical media overshadowed by music downloads, the tribulations of file sharing, Radiohead's optionally-priced release of In Rainbows (and its implications), and finally, the Internet's distribution of new music. MySpace particularly gave unsigned, unknown acts the means to easily disperse their music into the ears of the young general public, and we've seen some pretty amazing overnight successes like Lily Allen and Panic At the Disco.

Facebook is now getting in on the action and adding Facebook Music for bands to post songs, sell merchandise, and sell their music through iTunes with one click.

It sounds a little more sophisticated than MySpace's current offerings, and I am a little irked at Facebook expanding more and more into the craziness that MySpace has spiraled into, but I have to applaud any Internet-grassroots opportunity for little bands to get heard. I have a few faves I first heard of on MySpace, Internet radio and Pandora - do you?

BBC Launches The Lily Allen Online Chat Show

UK singer-songwriter Lily Allen has just launched an online chat show with UK's BBC 3 called Lily Allen and Friends. The show incorporates Lily's new music and brings together her MySpace and celebrity friends in an online interactive show.

Discussed on Trendhunter, once you become one of Lily's FaceBook or MySpace friends, or join her Flickr or YouTube pages, you can automatically send pictures, videos, or questions to guests on the show. You can even embed the entire show on your MySpace page. Unfortunately video clips are currently restricted to UK residents, but the site is definitely worth visiting!
