Welcome to 2007, Where's Your Robot?

After months of playing coy with the press, EveR-2 Muse, the world's first entertainer-robot, has finally shown her many, creepy faces. Designed by KITEC (Korea Institute of Industrial Technology), EveR-2 Muse was first introduced to the world last October at the Robot World 2006 at COEX in Seoul, and is apparently quite the singer.

According to the Korea Times, EveR2-Muse has the "appearance of a typical Korean woman in her 20s, can talk and sing, thanks to an embedded dialogue engine." She sang the new Korean ballad "I Will Close My Eyes For You" during the opening ceremony of the robot festival. For more about EveR2-Muse - and a full body shot, just read more

Korea Times says: EveR2-Muse, which received enthusiastic applause, will see her singing career flourish; she is scheduled to appear on television and star in music videos.

The robot has motor functions, enabling her to walk, stand up and sit down. Her predecessor, EveR-1, was stationary and couldn’t move. Also, EveR-2 is larger than EveR-1 - 165 centimeters and 60 kilograms versus 160 centimeters and 55 kilograms.

Summer Geek Tip: Islandize Your Web

First, go here and drag the islandize button to your browser. What I wouldn't give to know more about what goes on in Joan Holloway's head!

Well, I sort of can - with the Twittering Mad Men characters.

The Tweeters are unrelated to the actors from the show, but are considered "brand ambassadors" and Twitter their retro moves - after a slight dust-up worthy of a Mad Men episode, that is (AMC briefly shut them down, but with a "gentle nudge" from their web marketing department, let them resume).

People like Don Draper and Peggy Olson are Twittering, so get on it - their musings might be in the next Mad Men Tech Quiz!

How Did You Follow the Olympics: TV or the Internet?

With the 2008 Beijing Olympics freshly behind us, it's time to muse over how the games changed this time around. From a tech perspective, things were monumentally different. Today's Internet allowed people to follow along online and stream the Olympic games - to boot, NBCOlympics.com streamed over 2,200 live hours of games!

I have friends who watched the Olympics only on the Internet, and some who watched it the old-fashioned way - on TV. It's fantastic that we live in a time where we have that option; so now, tell me: How did you get your Summer Olympics?

Geek Tip: Text Google to Find the Best Prices While Shopping!

This geek tip is coming to you courtesy of Real Simple, and without being too punny, it is real simple. I knew you could text Google for info on mostly anything, and I was really stoked when I found the Checkout SmartShop iPhone app last week.

But if you don't have an iPhone or don't want to pay $5 for the app, then RS advises you to text 466453 with the item name that you spot while out shopping (like "Joe's Jeans Muse") and then type "price" after that.

Google will then text you back with the price of that item at different stores! You won't overspend if you have tech on your side (well . . . maybe you won't).

Have You Ever Mistrusted the Internet? Part One

CNET's Matt Asay wrote a great article about what he calls the "web's crisis of trust." Basically he says that Internet commerce is not where it could be, because people are scared to make online transactions due to concerns about security. Can you trust a faceless user or retailer with not only your credit card info, but that the product will be what you expected?

Asay cites eBay, which uses their feedback system to regulate "trust" instead of high-level rules and regulations. I use eBay all the time, but I would bet that every one of us was hesitant to use eBay at first, because you think you're going to get screwed.

It's not just retailers we fear - what about Craigslist? When I moved to San Francisco, I used it to find roommates, a job, and furniture online. My family was scandalized that I used this impersonal web board to meet up with people - claiming that I didn't know what kind of weirdos were on there. Well I do know those weirdos, because now they're my friends, former roommates, coworkers, etc.

I often muse that if I had suffered from this "crisis of trust" with Craigslist, I wouldn't have what I do now. So, tell me, has a crisis of trust with the Internet ever kept you from buying or doing anything you found there?
