George Lucas Owns the Droid: the Name, Not the Phone

What do George Lucas and the new Droid have in common? More than you'd think! I'm stoked to get my hands on the new device being offered up by Motorola to see if it really can top my iPhone, but when I got an invite to the San Francisco launch party I noticed something interesting at the bottom: the word "droid" is licensed to Lucasfilm LTD, which means Motorola pays a fee to the Star Wars icon to use his trademarked term.

I got the facts confirmed by a friend that works at the Lucas compound, but also found some other interesting tidbits about the name. The same device is being called the Milestone in Italy and Germany, but comes with more advanced multitouch support. Ah, the things you learn!

The new Motorola Droid from Verizon has been all over the headlines lately. From its iPhone-bashing commercial to the announcement that the new device will be released on Nov. 6 - and now the latest news: Droid is available for pre-order - Droid is everywhere!

I predict soon we'll see a wave of accessories to rival those for the iPhone; Motorola's site already features a multimedia docking station and dashboard holder.

The actual look and feel of the phone doesn't really differ that much from your standard smartphone, but what is unique about the Cliq is the MotoBlur interface, which equips the phone with some fancy features. Here's a little demo I had which showcases MotoBlur's many functions, most notably, the social integration.

Gossip Girl's Mystery Phones

Hello, Gossip Girl props! It seems that the scheming characters of the CW's Gossip Girl are a little careless with their cell phones - or does disposable income just allow them to have a cell phone for one episode and then upgrade? It began with Serena Van Der Woodsen, who was spotted in an early episode of the show with an unmistakable iPhone, pictured. However, for the rest of the season (a deal struck with Verizon?), S had a slider phone, and Apple's cell was never seen again.

Now it looks like the same forces are at work - the newly-released season one DVD has an image that, besides having unrecognizable actors, contains Chuck holding a cell phone. The odd thing is, if you're a GG fan and geeksugar tech quiz aficionado, then you know that Chuck used a Moto Q for the entire first season. But on the DVD cover, he has a RAZR2!

What's happening with these cell phones? Do they think we won't notice if they inexplicably change them up? We already discussed the fact that some characters' phones seem miscast, so what do we think of this cell phone mystery? And has anyone rewatched the pilot to see if Chuck has a RAZR2? I won't rest until I know!

David Beckham: An Early Adopter to the Hands-Free Law

California's hands-free wireless telephone law may have taken effect July 1, but celebs like Seal and David Beckham were already ready for the big day since they are both avid bluetooth headset users. Ask a Geek Girl: Bluetooth Speakerphone Conundrum

I got an email from a friend the other day wondering about which Bluetooth speakerphone she should get to be compliant with the upcoming California Hands-Free law that goes into effect tomorrow! She writes:

Do you know which visor Bluetooth device I can get for my LGEnv2 and my husband's LGvx5400? We have Verizon and they don't have anything at the stores yet that I can pick up. I have to be able to do voice dialing and hear the other person clearly. Oh, and hubby's gonna be spittin' mad if it's complicated!

Since I didn't want anyone spitting on anything, I got right on the task! To find out which device I would recommend, just read more.

After a little digging, I finally settled on the Motorola T505 hands-free speaker. It's simple to use (just push a few buttons on the back to link up), and you can either use the effective internal speaker to gab away, or with slightly more effort you can program your signal to route through your FM radio frequency for a better sounding conversation. Audio-voice dialing and caller ID make it the best for in-car dialing without picking up your phone. It's not the cheapest on the block (coming in at $97 on Newegg), but it's getting some really positive reviews and seems to be the easiest to use. Another cool feature? You can stream your tunes through the T505 from your Bluetooth compatible MP3 player, and still be able to take calls with noise-reduction technology!
