Geek Tip: Text Mint to Get Your Bank Account Balance

I regularly sing the praises of Mint, a free site that makes it easy to manage your finances online, so when I heard about their latest feature - text message alerts of your account balances - I couldn't wait to try it out.

If you're already signed-up to Mint, just text BAL or BALANCE to MyMint (696-468) and Mint will send you the balances from all of your bank accounts that you track in your Mint account.

Now you won't have any excuses about over-spending when you're out shopping!

I've been looking for a website to manage my finances simply but haven't yet been able to find it. This morning I found Mint, and while it is very simple to use, what it does is blowing my mind.

Add in all your accounts - checking, savings, credit cards - and Mint will track what you're spending and what you owe, compile budgets for you, alert you if anything unusual is going on in your account, etc. It really casts some perspective on what you're spending too - I talk a big game about shopping, but it turns out that I am a Walgreens high roller.

It also compares your cash to your debt and will tell you if your APRs are too high, like a sweet little electronic financial planner. If they added a bill pay and tracking function, it'd be perfect. Also, I was naturally concerned about the security, but after reading this, I'm cool. And did I mention the pretty pie charts?! You want to get a geek all excited, show her a color-coded pie chart.

Hungry? Got a smartphone? Whip it out, send a text, and expect a delivery of something delicious in about 30 minutes. How?

It's called CityMint. CityMint is a free service that allows you to order food with your cell phone (it currently works with iPhones, BlackBerrys, and Palms). After you sign up, point your browser to m.citymint.com and log in to check out the food options. Order over the Internet or with a simple text message.

For convenience's sake, you can keep your credit card information in your account and also pay with your phone when you order, but it's totally optional and not required for registration. Now they just need to work on getting me my food faster and I'll be a happy camper.

Website of the Day: Buxfer

I am a huge fan of Mint to help me keep track of my money, but another awesome option may be Buxfer, which allows you to see your financial situation (whether good or bad) at a glance. Like Mint, Buxfer shows you your recent purchases, gives you a pie chart so you can visually see where your money goes, view budgets, and gives you mobile access to your account.

But something unique to Buxfer will come in handy for those of you with roommates: you can set up group access to shared expenses and keep track of who owes what to whom. For example, if I buy groceries for the house, I can split the bill and list what my roommates would owe me so I (and they) don't forget later. Cause these days, who can afford not to get back what they are owed? Not me, that's for sure.

The Martha Stewart Geek Health Tip I Can't Get Behind

Martha Stewart may be one of my idols, but a health tip she included in the January issue of her namesake magazine, Martha Stewart Living, has me disagreeing with her pretty profusely.

Here's what she says:
"Alongside every one of my computers, I have a pitcher of mineral water infused with lemon, lime, orange, or cucumber and mint. I find that I drink more if the pitcher is there as a reminder and I can freely pour a glass, rather than opening bottle after bottle of water during the day."

Martha, really, open pitchers of water right alongside your computers? Sure, you should drink plenty of water, but putting a large, open vessel of liquid right next to your computer is just inviting damage (don't those pitchers look foreboding rather than refreshing?). Careful as you may be, it only takes a little nudge to fry a keyboard or worse, a motherboard.

Unless you can afford to replace expensive tech easily, do as I do, and drink lots of water - just put a lid on it.

geeksugar Chats With MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe

Just two months shy of geeking out with Samantha Ronson at the TechCrunch50/MySpace Party, I found myself at another fabulous MySpace party last night at the beautiful Old Mint building in San Francisco - hello?! Lionel Richie performed! This time, it was a MySpace 2.0 party celebrating MySpace Music and the latest partnership between Ashton Kutcher's production company, Katalyst Media, and MySpace. The second season of Kutcher's web series Blah Girls is expected to debut on MySpace early next year - in addition to all previous episodes from season one.

Last night PopSugar caught up with Ashton to chat about how his step-daughters played a role in creating his new web animation series Blah Girls, and I got the chance to talk with MySpace CEO about MySpace Music and what else we can expect from MySpace in the next year. Here's what he had to say:

On MySpace Music: "We've gotten a lot done in the last year. Obviously MySpace music is one of the biggest ventures that we've done. We have a new profile type that we're rolling out really soon where you can customize your profile and have any kind of background you want and that will be really cool. Complete redesign - and in addition to that we'll be adding nearly every mobile feature - a lot of exciting stuff."
On what the redesign will entail: "More music and then tons of videos and then more functionality around the music where you'll be able to take it with you."
