Stars Come Out For a Night at the Opera

Big-name celebrities came out last night for the premiere of Armida at the Met in New York. If you've never seen an opera, Armida would be an excellent place to start; it's about a woman who chooses revenge over love. Can't go wrong with that!

The New York Times interviewed the production's choreographer, Graciela Daniele, and asked what attracted her to it. "I like the power of the woman and the vulnerability of the woman," she said. "The fact that she’s all-powerful, and yet love comes in and makes things bad for her."

Culture Vulture: Would You Watch Opera on the Internet?

You no longer have to be in NYC to get a dose of the Met: The famed opera house is going to start streaming its opera performances online! You'll be able to get audio and video via its "Met Player" from metopera.org.

While I think this is completely cool - I want all important forms of culture to be widely available on the web - I'm kind of curious about the audience rift. That is, are people who are into opera also tech buffs who watch streamed content on the Internet?

But then again, who's not into the Internet?! Share your thoughts on this below!

January Jones Wears Backless YSL For a Star-Studded Night at the Opera

January Jones, Emma Roberts, and Amber Heard all donned YSL last night to attend the NYC premiere of Jules Massenet's Manon at the Metropolitan Opera. The ladies picked different styles from the design house, with January looking stunning in a backless number, Emma in a jumpsuit, and Amber in a slinky silk gown. Who's your pick for best dressed on the Met Opera red carpet? Also in YSL for the event were Chloë Moretz and Emmy Rossum.

Emma tweeted about her fun times catching up with Chloë and her brother Trevor Moretz. January, meanwhile, broke from promoting the season debut of Mad Men to attend the musical evening. January headed to the Big Apple nearly two weeks ago with her young son Xander Jones. Sunday's premiere of Mad Men set ratings records for AMC, and made an instant star of Jessica Paré, who plays Don Draper's young wife Megan. Her rendition of the '60s song "Zou Bisou Bisou" turned out to be the show's most talked-about moment.

January attended the Metropolitan Opera in a sexy black YSL gown on Monday night, joining fellow actresses Amber Heard, Chloë Moretz, and Emma Roberts on the red carpet.

At the Metropolitan Opera's premiere of Manon, the Mad Men star was all kitted out in a black silk Yves Saint Laurent gown from the Fall 2012 collection. Understandably, with such a dark, atmospheric ensemble, January's makeup artist tried to lighten the palette up a bit using seasonally appropriate lavender shadow and soft fuchsia lipstick to offset the austerity of her look. But do sweet Spring colors like these really work as dramatic winged eyeliner or statement lipstick? And in general, can March hues ever complement November designs?

Case in point, our recent gala for the Metropolitan Opera, coinciding with their opening of Anna Bolena, allowed us to mix amazing chandeliers from Restoration Hardware with our own designs, and the marriage was a really dynamic one.
