George Lucas Owns the Droid: the Name, Not the Phone

What do George Lucas and the new Droid have in common? More than you'd think! I'm stoked to get my hands on the new device being offered up by Motorola to see if it really can top my iPhone, but when I got an invite to the San Francisco launch party I noticed something interesting at the bottom: the word "droid" is licensed to Lucasfilm LTD, which means Motorola pays a fee to the Star Wars icon to use his trademarked term.

I got the facts confirmed by a friend that works at the Lucas compound, but also found some other interesting tidbits about the name. The same device is being called the Milestone in Italy and Germany, but comes with more advanced multitouch support. Ah, the things you learn!

Behind The Scenes at ILM

Last week I was one of the lucky few to get a tour of ILM on the Presidio here in San Francisco. This is where all the magic happens folks! Not only does the 82,000 square foot facility house ILM, but it also is home to Lucasarts and Lucasfilm studios. I got a great tour of two of the buildings, and was in geek heaven checking out all of the old paraphernalia from some of my favorite films. Although I didn't get a close encounter with George himself, I did run into another iconic figure - and it kinda freaked me out. Check out the sights from ILM in my slideshow!

Even More Hilarious Star Wars Stand Up to Cancer Outtakes

LucasFilm has released yet another clip of outtakes from its Stand Up to Cancer campaign, which encourages fans to snatch up some sweet shirts in order to fund cancer research. Good news - there's yet another shirt you can buy, this one featuring Darth Vader who urges you to never underestimate the power of Stand Up to Cancer. E3 Announcements: 5 Xbox Games I'm Excited About

Yesterday's Microsoft E3 press briefing gave us a look at what's to come in the next year for Xbox, and I gotta say - it's looking pretty good, folks. Though the presentation brought a ton of new titles (but very little launch dates), there were some standout games that I can't wait to see more of. Check out which ones below, then tell me your favorites in the comments!

Tomb Raider - This new look at the series takes us back to Lara Croft's origin - when she was just 21 years old, fighting her way through a mysterious island. The demo looked really intense and sometimes even a little bit frightening.
Kinect Star Wars - I perked up when I heard the Star Wars theme music playing during the presentation for this new title. I'm hoping LucasFilm does what it does best to help Kinect Star Wars take off - produce some awesome accessories to go along with it. Hello, light saber!

May the Force Help You Win eBay's Star Wars Car Auction

Every two seconds a Star Wars item is searched for and sold on eBay, according to the website. That's a huge number for a company that sells everything from vintage clothes to electronic components. In celebration of the franchise's staggering popularity and this Friday's release of the entire saga on Blu-ray, eBay introduced a dedicated Star Wars landing page on eBay featuring daily trivia, quizzes, and snapshots of Star Wars sales currently on the site.

Summer vacation isn't over yet - if you consider yourself a Star Wars fanatic, there are a few places around the globe that you should check off your "must-see" list before settling into Fall, starting with a trip to Industrial Light and Magic in San Francisco, CA. ILM is where some of the LucasFilm magic happens, and it also is the home of the famous Yoda fountain. Geeks from all around the globe travel to San Francisco's Presidio (previously a militarized area) to sit and soak up the knowledge of the little green Jedi, and it's not far from Skywalker Ranch in Marin county, where George Lucas himself has an office.
