Website of the Day: Last Year's Model

I'm not making any promises about what I'll do if/when the new iPhone is announced next month, but I'm entirely behind the philosophy of the website Last Year's Model.

Last Year's Model advocates the virtues of not upgrading your gadgets - whether it's to save money, to be earth-conscious, or because you simply don't need to.

It seems especially timely because of the current recession, but being conscientious about upgrading (especially if you tend to do it just because you want something new) is something we should all be thinking about at any time.

To participate, just go to the Facebook page and sign up, and say why you're sticking with one of your older gadgets. Mine? My Canon Rebel XT SLR, because it still takes, and will continue to take, gorgeous photos.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.
Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.
Choose "Blog" and "Regular Post."
Give your story a "Title."
Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.
Click "Next."
Choose the audience for your story to "Website of the Day" in the dropdown menu.
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").
Change channel to "Technology and Gadgets."
Fill in tag field with relevant tags.
Click "I'm done" to submit content.

Nina, Kirsten, Diane, and More Step Out For the Very Glamorous amfAR Gala

The annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala took place at the Hotel du Cap in France yesterday. The glamorous event has occurred during the Cannes Film Festival for almost two decades and this year brought out many stars, including a L'Wren Scott-clad Julianna Margulies and her husband Keith Lieberthal, as well as Alec Baldwin and his fiancée Hilaria Thomas. Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger, in Chanel, continued their red-carpet run with another appearance for the cameras after stepping out most recently for the Nights in Monaco Gala in Monte Carlo. Kirsten Dunst chose blue Louis Vuitton gown and sat with boyfriend and On the Road costar Garrett Hedlund during dinner. Milla Jovovich, who we chatted with last night at L'Oréal's bash, wore a metallic look by Atelier Versace while Kylie Minogue brought a pop of color in red. Petra Nemcova also chose the bright hue while model Doutzen Kroes went with white.

Model Liya Kebede Talks Minimal Makeup in Cannes

For model Liya Kebede, Cannes feels like magic. "It gets into you the minute you arrive here," she said this morning. "It's very glamorous, and I like that it's very international as well. You see all these different people from all over the world coming with their films, which is great." It's been a big year for Liya, who was named a L'Oréal Paris brand ambassador last June and is making forays into the film world. She's currently working on The Best Offer from Cinema Paradiso director Giuseppe Tornatore.

There's more to Liya than her stunning looks, though. She won a BellaSugar beauty award thanks to her philanthropic efforts. Her eponymous foundation is dedicated to improving maternal health, and she's created a clothing line, Lemlem, which helps support craftswomen in her native Ethiopia. Today, the supermodel talked about her various work endeavors and shared her best tips on beauty, the inside scoop on her own makeup routine, and more.

BellaSugar: It's pretty surreal here. Have you ever had an incredible Cannes moment?
Liya Kebede: I think you get it every time you get here. Last time, I ran into Woody Allen in the lobby. You can't believe it - it's just insane. There's so many of these great people and stars. At some point, you don't even react anymore. You get overstimulated. Every corner is some incredible person, or you go to a party and it's full of everybody. It's amazing. You just go, "I'm in Cannes!"

BellaSugar: And part of Cannes, is of course, getting made up and looking great, which you're quite familiar with, I'm sure. What's the best tip you've learned from the pros?
Liya Kebede: Less is more. If you're going do an eye thing, then don't do a lip thing. Try to find a balance about what you do. Also, nothing is necessarily specific - using a lip thing on your eye or cheeks is fine, and it works, and it's light. Play around! Nothing is so fixed.

Milla Jovovich Tells Us Her Cannes Highlight During a Night With Heidi, Alec, and the Hiltons

Last night was a busy one for many celebrities at Cannes. Milla Jovovich was decked out to make the rounds, starting at the Chopard and L'Oréal bash at the Hotel Martinez. She mingled at L'Oréal with fellow brand ambassadors Luisana Lopilato and model Natasha Poly. We caught a moment with Milla at the soiree, and she spoke about what her favorite part of the festival has been. Milla said, "The last two years I brought my daughter, so it's all about getting my work done and getting back to bed to sleep with my little girl. She was all day at the beach - loves it, loves it. She met a little friend here. They're best friends now - in the whole world - after one day together." Milla and her husband Paul W. S. Anderson are the proud parents of 4-year-old Ever.

The next stop on the party agenda was de Grisogono's Glam Extravaganza at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in nearby Antibes. This week's Mad Men brings back a character we haven't seen in a while, Paul Kinsey, and gives us a look at a relationship between two characters - Joan and Don - who we don't often see interact (but wow, when they do, is it entertaining). Financial problems also start to make Lane Pryce sweat in a subplot that's obviously leading to something far more serious.

The Paul story line kind of feels like a filler-y diversion, but I still liked seeing the old character and getting to see a side of Harry Crane, who's been relegated to being made fun of by Don lately. There are big moments this week I want to discuss, though, so to get to it, just read more.

Rachel Zoe held her son Skyler's hand as they walked in LA yesterday. The one-year-old is on the go after showing off his balancing skills during a shopping trip with Rachel in April. It's been an exciting month so far for the busy mom, who attended the Met Gala in NYC with model Karolina Kurkova last week. Rachel also celebrated Mother's Day on Sunday and tweeted that the holiday is "officially my favorite day of the year forever!" According to People, the new addition is reportedly named Noah, and will join big sister, 3-year-old Anja Louise.

Should There Be a War on Makeup For Little Girls?

Hope Perlman survived the moment of mothering girls I dread. In her post for NY Times' Motherlode, she relays the day her 13-year-old daughter begged to be allowed to wear makeup to a party.

After much soul searching – Perlman occasionally wears makeup herself – and lecturing, she said yes. She describes her rationale here:

"I wanted her to fit in, because I know fitting in is what middle school is about. But what, exactly, was she starting to fit into? The role of the teenager tortured by her failure to live up to a magazine picture? I'd been that teenager, with a picture of a model taped to my bedroom mirror. It wasn't what I wanted for my child."

So she acquiesced. But not before letting her know exactly what she thought about the message, so aggressively delivered by a male-dominated advertising industry, that girls and women need to paint themselves, cover their skin with lotions and potions, to be beautiful and feminine.

"So that's how I allowed my daughter to start wearing makeup," Perlman says at the end of her essay, "I gave her permission - along with a large and cumbersome bag of guilt. The personal is political. Better remember that. Here's your mascara, honey. And your burden of awareness. Enjoy!"

I relate to Perlman’s story: When my daughter first sensed I had "issues" with makeup, she was about four years old. She asked me to get her a makeup kit, like the one her little friend Hanna got for being a flower girl, and I refused.

"Why not?" she pouted.

Instead of simply saying "because I said so," I treated her to a verbal tirade of stinging righteousness that came from an apparently conflicted place inside of me.
