LC and Brody "Shine" in New AT&T Cell Phone Commercial

Since the season finale of The Hills, I've seriously been in Audrina, Lauren, and Heidi drama withdrawal. And since I can't stalk them and their cell phones each week, I'm always on the lookout for new pics and tidbits of juicy info. Well LC is back on TV, teaming up with AT&T yet again for a cheeky commercial for the LG Shine. As you'll see from the commercial below, the sleek Shine is ideal for checking your makeup. . . and for checking out girls. But it also comes with a 2-megapixel camera and camcorder (with flash), a music player, and mobile email. All this for only $50 after the mail-in rebate.

LG Shows Off 'Candybar' Shine Phone

LG has introduced a 'candybar incarnation' of its Shine slider phone, reports Reg Hardware and like the glamorous ISSE Monaco Phones from Nokia, it will only be available in Russia for a while.

It's unclear when the Shine Bar - as the non-slider is known - will make it to the rest of Europe and beyond, says Reg Hardware.

Expect it to pack in a 262,144-color, 240 x 320 display; a two megapixel camera with auto-focus; Bluetooth; 50MB of user-accessible memory; and a Micro SD slot for up to 2GB of add-in storage space.

The original iPhone was released in June 2007, but in 2008 Apple upgraded to the iPhone 3G and we witnessed more and more of young Hollywood testing out its touchscreen and apps. Brody Jenner showed off his iPhone on The Hills before his LG Shine commercial; singers Carrie Underwood, Ashley Tisdale, Hilary Duff and Jennifer Hudson presumably love easy access to iTunes; Katherine Heigl, Kelly Ripa and Megan Fox play with their iPhone on the set and streets, while Spencer Pratt and Whitney Port made their mini machines famous on The Hills.

Do the Gimmicks for LG's Dare Make You Want to Buy It?

Since PetSugar had noticed the controversial portrayal of pit bulls in one of the commercials for LG's Dare, I began recalling the other commercials for the Dare, like this one where a Jessica Simpson-lookalike risks life and limb to get her Dare back from a ledge.

Since LG has begun giving their products cheeky names (many of them so similar to Alfred Hitchcock film titles that it warranted a quiz) and the voice over for these ads says sexily, "Dare You To Touch One" with its "bold features" and "fearless design," it seems like the company is reaching far into its bag of gimmicks to appeal to a young, hip audience (like they did with Lauren and Brody in their Shine commercial) by seeming edgy.

I'm not so sure that the controversy of the pit bull commercial was unintentional, either (thankfully the commercial got pulled); I mean, here we are, talking about it, after all. Juxtapose these ads with Apple's commercials, which, though they rely on catchy songs, the product is always the star - like in the MacBook Air commercial.

But you be the judge: after seeing these ads are you intrigued by the Dare? Do the ads influence your buying habits at all?

Not embarrassed to admit that I ooh-la-la'ed one non-tech spec about the LG Shine, which LC expertly demonstrated: the fact that it makes an awesome mirror. But since I don't need a new phone, I have found a way to make my iPhone do double-duty: the Echo mirrored iPhone case, just $13.

It doesn't look available for the iPhone 3G just yet, so 1st gen users, enjoy, and 3G users - just shine it up extra good for the reflection.

AT&T To Get Some Red Hot Lovin' Deals This Valentine's Day?

Why Are Phones From Other Countries So Chic?

I am constantly in awe of technology, specifically cell phones from Asia and Europe. Perhaps I've just grown up thinking of Asia and Europe as fashion epicenters and far more trendy than the US, or maybe I'm just jealous I can't get an 18-Carat Gold Nokia 8800 Sirocco phone, which is available only in Europe, or a LG Candybar Shine, which is only available in Russia. It seems my desire for unattainable cell phones is pretty common.

MSNBC brought up the fact that it's all too easy to feel a little green about non-American cell phones, because they often seem inferior to more glitzy, technologically advanced phones from overseas. One reader even told MSNBC: "The U.S. cellular phone system is ridiculous. …It is an embarrassment to compare your new phone with [those of] your friends from Europe or Asia." Here's more:

So what gives? Why are things in the States so different? Unfortunately it's not an easy question to answer, and if I had the time and the column space I could write a thesis detailing the many reasons. But I have to go for brevity here, so I've simplified it into three main points: competing network, carrier control, and cultural differences. Each of these factors plays a big role in explaining why U.S. users remain a bit behind our overseas friends.

What do you think? Does the technology and appearance of iPhone, BlackBerry (yeah, it's made in Canada, but close enough!) and Helio make up the difference?
