Tech Fashion: Light Emitting Diode Dress

This dress gives Madonna's "Ray of Light" and the statement "she's glowing" a whole new meaning. This glow in the dark dress is full of light emitting diodes. I can't decide where I'd wear a dress like this, but all I can say is it's way more chic than the racy Glowfur bikini top or the LED Puss In Boots. These dresses will be available in the Japanese market toward the end of the year, so don't expect to see people glowing up till then.

Electric Fashion Has Me Charged Up

Who knew LEDs could be so romantic? I mentioned designer Mary Huang the other day, but her gorgeous designs deserve more of a spotlight. She has titled her project "rhyme & reason," exploring what happens when you illuminate otherwise understated white cotton garments.

This dress and scarf are not to be left in the back of your closet, either; Huang encourages them to be used as a light when not being worn. The pieces can be battery or wall charged, and despite their similarity to a lamp, they're still light years classier than the Glowfur LED bikini top.

My further technical advice is that you wear these on the dance floor of a very dark bar.

LED Jewelry: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

By nature geek jewelry is, well, pretty geeky. It's something we've all come to understand and even love - especially when we find geek chic frosting like the Fancy Binary ring or the imaginary, but innovative iGems. But where do these LED Jewelry pieces from Media LED fall on the geek chic meter? Clothing and jewelry items with LEDs always remind me of the light emitting Diode dress, which quite frankly is not geek chic. Would you wear LED jewelry? It comes in LEDheart, LEDcross and LEDapple shapes and supports USB recharge.

Hussein Chalayan Creates "Big Bang" Mechanical Dresses

Hussein Chalayan is certainly no stranger to incorporating technology into his fashions, as he already showcased a series of LED laser dresses earlier this year in Tokyo. During this week's Paris Fashion Week , Hussein presented his Fall collection, which included high-tech dresses used to symbolize the Big Bang.

As discussed on Boing Boing, models came out at the end of the show wearing moving lights that orbited around them, representing the center of the universe. They certainly don't look like the most comfortable pieces of geek apparel to wear, but an interesting concept nonetheless. I'd rather see more light emitting diode dresses, which are somewhat fashionable and functional.

ThinkGeek's Fuze necklaces combine the natural beauty of quartz crystal with the geeky beauty of glowing LEDs. The Fuze crystals are hand selected, shaped, and polished and then garnished with an embedded LED that gradually cycles through a range of colors. The glowing crystal is powered by small batteries in the magnetic clasp. The necklace costs $24.99. I've mentally stored this necklace in the "if I ever go to a rave and need something to match my Light Emitting Diode Dress" category, so no, I don't really think it's chic.

Geeks adore clocks. Fashionable or Too Techie? The Video Dress

Turkish designer Hussein Cahalayan presented this high tech video dress at the Milan Design Fair. With 15,600 embedded LED lights in the fabric, this dress displays a time lapse of a rose opening and closing. It is currently on display at the 10 Corso Como gallery in Milan, along with the mechanical dresses from the show in Paris. Check out the video below to see it in action.
