Would You Watch "The Phone"?

Here's one unknown caller you don't want to ignore! Justin Timberlake is set to produce a game show for MTV called The Phone, where contestants would pick up cell phone calls hidden around a big city, and they'd have to complete missions assigned by the caller on the other end of the phone.

I'm kind of intrigued by the premise of this show, and totally stoked about the fact that a game show will be built around cell phones. But I'm guessing if the production value isn't that great, it might be boring watching two people talk on cell phones while running around a city - after all, I do already have The Hills (joke)! What do you think? Would you watch this show?

On today's episode of Oprah, the ever so sexy and stylin' J.T. couldn't help but share a few secrets about how he keeps in contact with his latest love Jessica Biel-although he didn't reveal his 'mystery woman's' name on the show. Here's what Timberlake had to say about iChat, one of the ways he stays connected while on the road: "Technology is a wonderful thing sometimes.... I find that to be really cool, when you can actually see someone's face. I do it with my friends, as well, just to have a conversation back and forth. It just makes you feel closer, that's all." Does Gossip Spread Faster Because Of The Web?

I've been thinking about how technology has changed dating, weddings and even gossip ever since seeing 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake's "Ayo Technology" and reading a USA Today article that claims office gossip is spread faster these days because of instant messenger and e-mail. While office gossip isn't exactly fodder for official study, USA Today claims it has taken on new dimensions in this digital age - even becoming a "dynamic force that can build camaraderie but can also destroy work relationships or careers." The proliferation of instant messaging, Internet blogs and e-mail means rumors in the workplace spread faster and farther, and can do more lasting damage.

While this seems obvious to me, it's not a topic I had considered until the last couple of weeks, when a friend admitted she mistakenly imed the wrong co-worker and typed some unnecessarily catty details about another woman in the office. Sadly, my friend isn't alone. USA Today also notes:

Nearly two-thirds of employees say that people in their workplace gossip about company news, according to an August study by Steelcase, a Grand Rapids, Mich., provider of office furniture and equipment. Twenty-eight percent of employees who work in offices without a consistent method of communicating news (such as staff meetings) say gossip is their first source for information.

I try to re-read my e-mails before I send them and consider whether they are appropriate for all eyes. Like it or not, I don't think our e-mails are as protected and safe as we might like to hope. What do you think?

Justin Timberlake Teams Up With Verizon For JT-TV

All you Justin Timberlake fanatics better figure out who your cell phone carrier is. Verizon Wireless and Justin Timberlake have announced JT-TV, a new channel available on the Verizon Wireless V CAST service. Apparently, JT is the first artist to launch his own mobile channel that will be updated throughout the year. JT-TV will roll out four "channels" in 2007: Fashion, Film, Music and Lifestyle.

Users will have access to behind-the-scenes footage of Justin's first William Rast fashion show - it will feature snippets from the fashion show and also include exclusive interviews with Justin, his William Rast partner Trace Ayala, giving fans insight into the concept and the personal significance of this new line. read more

Celebrity Viral Videos Are Good For the Image

Trendhunter recently wrote that actors were starting to get hip to the idea of viral videos as a way to boost their image (in response to the Matt Damon/Sarah Silverman instant classic), and I could not agree more. Once I see a celebrity in a viral video parodying themselves, I think they have a fantastic sense of humor and don't take themselves too seriously - that latter quality being something that is normally antithetical to the image of actors, who are generally perceived as egotistical bigheads with a deep need to be taken seriously. Will Ferrell's FunnyOrDie (their original post being the amazing "The Landlord") has helped in this phenomena, and before sites and actors cropped up trying to create virals, YouTube really boosted the idea - would you have seen Justin Timberlake's "D*** in a Box" video if it had only aired on SNL? Probably not.

The point is, seeing Jerry O'Connell make fun of Tom Cruise's Scientology video or Fergie spelling her infamous hit or James Franco doing JustinBobby makes a whole generation of tastemakers who live and breathe the Internet (not so coincidentally, this is the same group who spends the most money on movie tickets) sit up and appreciate that down-to-earth star.

Will these videos enable stars to make their movies and TV shows hits? Maybe. They make me snort coffee onto my keyboard, and for that they should be proud.
