Who Wins: Microsoft's Seinfeld Ads or Apple's Mac vs. PC Ads?

Though the second Microsoft ad featuring Jerry Seinfeld is a lot funnier than the first, I can't help but feel that it's still lacking . . . direction? Humor? As a die-hard Seinfeld fan, I'm disappointed that these spots aren't as "Jerry" as his humor on the show was, and even more disappointed because I don't really know what Microsoft is trying to say.

Contrast that with their rival Apple, who've spun the Get a Mac ad campaign off the notion that Mac users are cool and PC users are, well, John Hodgman, and I have to call Apple as the winner again. I get the point, they don't meander, and they entertain me.

Now putting aside your preference for Apple or Microsoft, tell me, which ads do you like more?

It was just announced today that funnyman Jerry Seinfeld was hired by Microsoft to be one of its key celebrity pitchmen in its new $300 million ad campaign. In an attempt to take on the longstanding Mac vs. PC ads with rumored slogans like "Windows, Not Walls," Jerry will appear in ads alongside the new retiree Bill Gates. Kinda ironic, no? What's even more ironic is the fact that Jerry showed off a Mac in his apartment all throughout the days of Seinfeld! What the. . .

Do You Ever Worry About Your Worlds Colliding Online?

I was watching an old episode of Seinfeld the other day (it was "The Pool Guy" episode), and I couldn't help but LOL when George went off on Jerry for introducing Elaine to his girlfriend Susan. If you haven't seen the episode, George gets mad because he doesn't want his "worlds colliding". . . meaning that if his relationship self meets his independent self, it will be the end of independent George (you can check out the clip below).

Anyway, this got me thinking about social networking sites like Facebook, where many people keep their work contacts separated from their friends and therefore, decrease the chances of their "worlds colliding." What do you think about this? Do you keep some sort of separation among your various worlds?

Microsoft "I'm a PC" Ads: Clever or Copycat?

With the news of the Jerry Seinfeld/Microsoft commercials being put aside for now (only 14 percent of you liked their ads more than Apple's "Get a Mac" ads), Microsoft has revealed that their next campaign will be a more direct hit at Apple (and thankfully, more direct in general).

Known as the "I'm a PC" ads, Microsoft will portray various non-dorky Microsoft users attesting to what they do and what they're like - ostensibly not nerds like John Hodgman's portrayal. In addition, they have a more direct anti-Apple attack with a John Hodgman clone who satirically declares he is a PC and has "been made into a stereotype."

On the one hand, it's kind of a "Touche" on Microsoft's part, but since these are so hot on the heels of the universally confounding Seinfeld ads, I can't help but feel like these were thrown together to try to salvage their image and just went for a cheap shot - and worse, lazily imitated a successful ad campaign.

What do you think? Is Microsoft right on, or just hanging on?

How To Create Your Own 'Seinfeldian Chain'

Jerry Seinfeld once told an aspiring comic that he uses a unique calendar system to force himself to write and achieve goals. It's a simple system - you just mark days off with a big red "X."

Much like crossing off days or goals in your good old moleskine, you'll feel accomplished and successful if you follow suit. "After a few days you'll have a chain," Seinfeld reportedly told the comic. "Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain."

How does it work? The widespread use of web calendars means no one marks dates off on big wall calendars anymore, but you can do it online with the Seinfeldian Chain. It will allow you to keep track of your progress toward any goal. You can give your chain a special name (say maybe a fitness goal or goal to make meals at home) and then save it by clicking on the provided link. Bookmark the page and you'll be ready to mark away toward your goal.

The Windows and Mac Guys in '96

This ad totally cracks me up! Little did I know that the PC vs. Mac wars started long before the 21st century. I've got proof - this Windows vs. Mac ad from 1996! The descriptions of each one are worth zooming your eyes in to read, for example "The Mac Addict," it says: "The casual 'Seinfeld cut' is in. Of course, Jerry would never use a PC." I can't even imagine who would be their celebrity poster boy for Apple today. . . John Mayer perhaps? Did you know that the latest PC guy is really a Mac user? Oh the drama!
