Surviving on Social Media: Could You Do It?

We spend a lot of time on our social networks. So much so that some people might say they live their lives online. I certainly do. So how hard would it be then, to get through your day-to-day life surviving only by those things that were provided to you via social media? One man, dubbed Mister SocialM, on Twitter, did exactly that - getting his phone charged, going places, and getting "things" through his online following for 48 hours in conjunction with Intel's IdeaJam and Katalyst (yes, that's Ashton Kutcher's company).

In a less extreme (yet still very socially-focused) case, a traveler named Justin Oliphant is currently making his way around the globe, being hosted by people he's met through his social networks with the Friend of a Friend Project. In a sort of "circle of life" effect, he documents his time with his hosts in blogs, Facebook posts, tweets, videos, and beautiful photos, and has already made it over 10,000 miles (from California to Chicago so far, by way of Arizona, Utah, New Orleans, and Kentucky) thanks to friends, friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends.

Not that you may ever need to, but if you had to survive on the goodness of your social networks and connections, could you? Would you?

Tech Meets Art at Coachella: Intel's Creators Project

All weekend long, I've been talking about my experiences at the Coachella music festival, but I was also there to check out Intel's Visual Life and Creators Project. Partnering up with some seriously talented visual artists, Intel (who sponsored my trip to Indio, CA by hooking me up with a hotel, transportation, and food) helped to outfit some of the Coachella stages with art installations, lights, and cool effects. 5 Awesome Unexpected Things to See at Coachella

This weekend, I celebrated alongside thousands of others at the three-day Coachella Music festival. Held in Indio, California, it's one of the largest in the US with around 226,000 in attendance last year. This year, Intel sponsored my trip there - taking care of my accommodations, transportation, and nourishment - so that I could check out the Creators Project: a joint venture between Intel and Vice to promote independent artists who use technology in their art. I'll be talking more about the project in the next few days, but first: a few awesome things I wasn't expecting to find at Coachella.

Dancing robots and video games - Thanks to the Creator's Project, we were treated to home brew video games and 3D art. One artist built a computer program that allowed these robots to perform a dance routine in perfect unison. Check out the video!
A roller rink - Off the main drag of the main stage, we found a fun carnival tucked in with the Coachella campground. There was a full on roller rink (BYOS - bring your own skates), fun seesaws, swings, and an arcade. Be sure to bring lots of quarters if you ever go!

Sights From the 2011 Coachella Music Festival

This weekend marks the 12th annual celebration of the Coachella Music Festival, and while there's so many amazing bands to see, there's also a lot of tech. Did you know you can watch it live starting at 4 p.m. daily? Intel sponsored my trip to Indio, California (kindly taking care of my travel expenses like flights, accommodations and nourishment), and for good reason - its Creators Project was in full force at the festival. The Super Bowl Goes Geek: Intel Sponsoring Post-Game Show

Geek culture is so hot right now. Take this commercial from Intel, which shows Ajay Bhatt (co-inventor of the USB) walking into a room with rock star-like fanfare. It's amazing in so many ways, and Intel plans to continue showing off their geeky humor during next week's Super Bowl. Intel announced today that they will be hosting the post-game show after the Colts take on the Saints, and will be running two new commercials during the game that make light of our obsession with technology. It's sure to be just one of many "geeky" commercials running during the ultra-premium time slot (will there be an Apple Tablet commercial, perhaps?). Check out the hilarious commercial from last year below - I can't wait to see what they've come up with this time!

Yahoo! Unveils the Widget Channel For Televisions

I'm not really a stickler for needing to know what the weather is doing outside at all times. But for those who are (mom and dad listen-up), Yahoo! has designed a Widget Engine that allows TV viewers to access a wide range of information, all from the convenience of their TV screen. During CES last week, Yahoo! showcased the weather widget on a Sharp widget-enabled television. As you can see, a full weather forecast is conveniently displayed to the left of your screen.

These new TV Widgets will allow users to do things like interact with friends, track their stocks or favorite sports teams, or check out the latest news headlines. The Widget Channel was created by Yahoo! and Intel and can work on televisions as well as LCD TV/DVD combinations.
