Website of the Day: Howcast

Share time: A challenge I deal with as a geek is learning to do things by just reading instructions about them. Truth be told, I am totally a visual learner and would rather learn that way, but have long since given up on trying to get everything that way. Mainly because things like the web, manuals, and just about everything else worth learning to do is based on written material (although I completely gave up on learning the guitar this way years ago. Poor, lonely guitar in my closet, I'm sorry).

A great site called Howcast lets me get back to those visual roots, by posting videos of people teaching you/performing how to do something. For stuff like crafting - I want to learn to knit super bad, for instance, but don't have time to find and take a class - there's no better way to learn than by someone actually showing you. Hey guitar, you calling my name?

Website of the Day: Unclasses

It may be back to school for some of you, but for the rest of us working stiffs, it remains the grind as usual. But that doesn't mean you can't still learn, and in a cool, zero-pressure way, thanks to the Internet. Unclasses lets you teach or take an "unclass" - which, I guess, is named as such because you're learning fun things.

It takes advantage of social networks by letting you connect with other users via Facebook and Twitter, and others hungry learners who also may want to learn to juggle or pop and lock.

You can also get your adult education on at HowCast, another casual Internet learning resource. What would you want to learn or teach?

To learn how to post your favorite websites to our Website of the Day group, read more.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the Website of the Day group.

Click the pink "Share" menu on the top left side of the page.

Choose "Blog" and "Regular Post."

Give your story a "Title."

Fill in the "Body" with a link to your favorite website and the reasons why you love it.

Click "Next."

Choose the audience for your story to "Website of the Day" in the dropdown menu.

Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Website of the Day").

Change channel to "Technology and Gadgets."

Fill in tag field with relevant tags.

Click "I’m done" to submit content.

So join the Website of the Day group and share information about all your favorite sites! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Cell Phones Are Becoming the Kitchen Gadget of Choice

Not only can your cell phone help you find your way around town, but it can also help you find your way around the kitchen. A recent report tells us that the cellphone - and particularly the iPhone - is quickly becoming the go-to gadget for chefs around the country, for their ability to pull up recipes and keep track of needed ingredients while on-the-go.

But tech in the kitchen doesn't stop with apps like iConvert, which helps you convert weights, lengths, and volumes, or iFood Assistant that brings you over 7,000 recipes, shopping lists and pictures to help you craft your gastronomic masterpiece - but Podcasts are making their way into the kitchen as well. For example, Howcast brings you free weekly how-to instructions ranging from making the perfect mojito to crafting authentic latkes. Plus, you can download podcasts right to your iPhone and chop right along with the instructions. Can it get any easier? I may just take up cooking after all!

Source
