H&M's Virtual Dressing Room: No Clothing Removal Necessary

Aside from the fact that I've never been closer to mental breakdowns than when I've been in an H&M dressing room, I'm jazzed on their virtual dressing room. You can customize your model to look like you, down to height, weight, and measurements, and then "try on" clothes from H&M. (Note: They don't appear to be clothing items from this season's collection, but don't worry, I will totally do reconnaissance in the name of geek after work).

H&M appears to have someone geeky on staff, with their forays into SIMS and cell phone-purchasing, so I am begging that person on behalf of conscious women everywhere: Please, please, please open an online store already!

Purchase H&M Clothes With Your Cell Phone

The popular clothing retailer H&M will be offering a high-tech new service where consumers can make purchases with their cell phones. If you happen to be flipping through a mag and see a hot dress by H&M or you want those jeans from a billboard ad, just take a pic of the black and white Semacode bar on the ad with your phone. The code will allow access to H&M's product catalog where products can be purchased and charged to the user's account. If you haven't noticed the ads for the new The Sims 2 H&M® Fashion Stuff across the Sugar Network recently I suggest you take a gander. The game allows you to dress up your Sims in H&M® clothing collections for men and women with The Sims 2 H&M® Fashion Stuff. Your Sims characters can choose from FabSugar-approved H&M® fashions, then play with retail-themed items like mannequins, clothing racks, cash registers and even walk the runway. It's a real makeover from the days of plain Jane Sims clothing and adds a fun, girlie touch to the game. I dare you to not get addicted.

The game requires The Sims 2, The Sims 2 Special DVD Edition, or The Sims 2 Holiday Edition to play.

IBM Debuts "Virtual Mirror" Kiosks For Hair and Makeup Help

Next week, IBM will be introducing their first ever "Virtual Mirror" kiosk at the National Retail Federation in NYC. What it does is take a digital photo (of the shopper) and scan in various makeup and hair coloring products that they may be interested in purchasing. Without having to actually try the makeup on you are guaranteed true colors and an accurate replica of your face. The EZ Face virtual mirror is already being used by Super-Pharm, one of the biggest drugstores in Israel, and will hit large US retailers sometime this year.

With virtual dressing rooms at a number of H&M stores and an Adidas shop in Paris utilizing virtual shopping mirrors, it's no surprise that this kind of technology is catching on. What do you think? Would you ever trust something like this to give you a precise makeup portrayal?

Ikea Furniture Hits Sims 2, I Look For Dave First

You should know by now that I am a chronic shopper - it's kind of a problem - but I'm a smart shopper, too. I love H&M for trendy but affordable clothes, and Ikea for home furniture and decor that doesn't totally empty my wallet. The Sims apparently feel the same way, too - not only can your Sims sport the cutest H&M outfits, now their houses can be pimped out in classic pieces by the Swedish retail master. With the Ikea Home Stuff Pack for Sims 2, available at the end of June, your virtual Sims home can get Dave-d, Malm-ed, and Benno-ed.

The best thing about this? You don't have to worry about sprouting new gray hairs trying to put this furniture together!

Marimekko Mouse Pads for the Scandinavian Geek in You

If you're lucky enough to be near an H&M, then I hope you've gone in and checked out the Marimekko line!

I have, and because I'm totally on a Marimekko kick right now, I found these awesome mouse pads bearing beautiful designs from my favorite Finnish design company.

The Unikko design (the flower) is out of stock now, but I had to include it, because it's a classic.

And honestly, I'm not really as into looking at mouse pads anymore, because I'm on my laptop a lot, but I am totally making an exception for these!

Google Releases Print Ad 2D Barcodes

H&M stores in Europe have already started putting barcodes in magazines and on billboards so that customers can take a pic of items with their cellphone cameras and get more product info later.

Google's new 2D barcodes may be a bit different, but they basically have the same outcome. Webmaster Tips reports that these new barcodes, which have already been spotted in Japan, contain info that can prompt your phone's web browser to go to a certain URL. So say for instance you wanted to know more about a new laptop, just take a picture with your cell phone and it will direct you to the product's website - neat, right?! Source

Would You Order Food Via RFID?

We've all agreed that the idea of organizing your wine rack with RFID technology, an automatic identification method that relies on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders, is completely geek chic. We've also agreed that the prospect of H&M allowing shoppers to purchase items via a Semacode bar that is read by a cell phone may revolutionize shopping, but is the notion of ordering food via RFID as intriguing?

This week The Korea Times reported that McDonald's and SK Telecom have unveiled a new ordering system that will allow customers to use mobile phones and infra-red sensors to make orders from their table. The system will send customers a phone message when their meal is ready. Apparently, the "Touch Order" menu is the first in the world to utilize the radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology in a self-ordering system at a restaurant. Do you think you would use this service?
