In honor of Earth Day, I was originally going to offer up my favorite eco geek and feature them in their own post. But once I got digging, I really couldn't decide on just one! Sure, the term "geek" may apply to more than gadgets in this case, but not only are these ten people lovably geeky in their own right, they all have one thing in common: they're passionate about our planet! Wired's Geekster Handbook: Which Kind of Geek Are You?

This month's Wired brings you their take on the geek hierarchy - remember when we surmised that there were many different types of geekdom? Well, Wired agrees, and they've offered up six types of geek: The Fanboy (classic Star Wars/Simpsons lover and defender), the Music Geek (think Rob Gordon from High Fidelity), the Gamer (your thumbs are always sore), The Gadget Guy (3G + iPhone = drool), the Hacker (fears the sun), and the Otaku (all Manga, all the time).

Do you fall into any of the categories, or are you a different kind - or a hybrid geek?

Who Is the Techie in Your House?

Are you the "go-to" person in your house for programming DVRs or recovering deleted files? Or maybe your younger sibling is the tech savvy guru of the house? When I was living with my parents, my sisters and I always argued about who was the "geek" of the house. In the end, they always relied on me, the youngest, to deal with their computer issues-good times! Now I want to know who you consider to be the "techie" of your house. Let me know below! Yes, this may seem like one of those which came "first the chicken or the egg? questions," but I guarantee you that the internet, a worldwide, massive network of publicly accessible interconnected computer networks, came long before the World Wide Web, a system of interlinked, hypertext documents accessed via the net. Do You Fit Into The Traditional Geek Hierarchy?

Most people don't know what to think of being called a geek. They either embrace it like Gallery of the Absurd's 14, who proudly says "I am a major geek and I wear it as a badge of honor," reject it or hide it. To be fair to those people who skeptically look at me and say "you are geeksugar?" the word's first definition is "a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake." Not exactly something most of us want to identify with and a far cry from my usage of the work. But the word's final definition - "an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity " - does just the trick for me. And, as I have learned from you readers, most of us consider ourselves to be some variation or variety of a geek. Be it a mac geek, pc geek, video gamer geek, Dungeons and Dragons geek or a general, no holds barred geek.

Brunching.com recently featured a hilarious chart chronicling the Geek Hierarchy. At the top are people who have published Science Fiction/Fantasy books who consider themselves less geek than people who majored in folklore and mythology, comic book fans, Anime fans who insist on subtitles, Anime who don't care about subtitles, video gamers, Heinlein fans, Amateur Science Fiction or Fantasy writers and Science Fiction television fans. At the very bottom of the chart are "people who write erotic versions of Star Trek where all the characters are Furries." Most of those categories either elude or intimidate me, but I appreciate that someone took the time to lay out the traditional geek hierarchy for us. Not sure I fit into it. The Dually Talented Human Ghetto Blaster

This past weekend I was out and about in San Francisco and saw this geekalicious musician along the Embarcadero. I don't think he saw me under those thick bottle cap glasses, but he did strum a couple awesome tunes on his guitar while rocking a one-of-a-kind cardboard ghetto blaster - on his head. It was a feat to behold. The boombox was fully pimped out with an antenna, speakers, a radio tuner, tone and balance controls, graphic equalizers and a cassette deck, which just so happen to double as his oxygen mask. Do Geeks Make Better Lovers?

Wired Magazine's in-house sex drive expert Regina Lynn has come up with a hilarious The 10 Real Reasons Why Geeks Make Better Lovers post which kills the "geeks make better lovers because they're worried they'll never get anyone else" stereotype. It's NSFW, which is why I figured Saturday was the perfect day to share. My favorite highlights include:

Geeks get personal with tech - All engineers may be geeks, but not all geeks are engineers. Doesn't matter. You don't need to know how to build a platform in order to do a half-gainer in full pike with a twist into the river of love.

Geeks get things done - Geeks know all the shortcuts. They research your interests, send you surprise gifts, plan your perfect vacation, get the bills and grocery shopping out of the way, write to their mothers, and tease you mercilessly, all while pretending to work. And when you ask them to set up your home Wi-Fi or install a home theater, it's done quickly, expertly and without complaint.

Wired’s 10 Best Geek Cities List

It’s hard out there for a geek. No really, it is. While it may seem that everyone you know has their own webpage, two cell phones and knows the Bill Gates biography a little too well, not every city is fully equipped for the geekiest among us.

Wired magazine compiled a list of the 10 Best Geek Cities in America, using what they call “highly scientific methodology as well as algorithms snuck out of NASA and Google.”

The list, which includes my homebase, assessed the geekiness of more than 30 major US cities based on their proximity to top-ranked engineering schools, tech jobs per capita, personal ads per capita on Geek 2 Geek, Craigslists postings per capita, number of attendees at local meetings of dorkbot, a group for “people doing strange things with electricity, available free wifi, comic book stores and Circuit City stores.

Geek Roundup: Your Favorite Fictional Geeks

Last week I asked you to share your favorite fictional geeks after I admitted my love for hobbits and the boys from HBO's Flight of The Conchords. Most of you ended up leaving your answers in the comments section of that story, revealing your love for Seth Cohen on "The OC," Bill from "Freaks and Geeks" (such a good choice daizyk70!) and of course, Hiro from "Heroes."

As for those of you who bookmarked your choices, the range is pretty exciting and hilarious. 7bits expressed his secret crush on Erin the Esurance girl, partysugar proved her love for the glamorous Hermione Granger and tdamji shared her love for the fabulously geeky Nancy Drew.

"Nancy Drew is the coolest!" says tdamji. "She solves mysteries that grown men can't, while looking totally snappy in her 1950s wardrobe (even in the new movie!), using her great geeky gadgets and never losing her cool." Touché!
