Do You Fit Into The Traditional Geek Hierarchy?

Most people don't know what to think of being called a geek. They either embrace it like Gallery of the Absurd's 14, who proudly says "I am a major geek and I wear it as a badge of honor," reject it or hide it. To be fair to those people who skeptically look at me and say "you are geeksugar?" the word's first definition is "a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken or snake." Not exactly something most of us want to identify with and a far cry from my usage of the work. But the word's final definition - "an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity " - does just the trick for me. And, as I have learned from you readers, most of us consider ourselves to be some variation or variety of a geek. Be it a mac geek, pc geek, video gamer geek, Dungeons and Dragons geek or a general, no holds barred geek.

Brunching.com recently featured a hilarious chart chronicling the Geek Hierarchy. At the top are people who have published Science Fiction/Fantasy books who consider themselves less geek than people who majored in folklore and mythology, comic book fans, Anime fans who insist on subtitles, Anime who don't care about subtitles, video gamers, Heinlein fans, Amateur Science Fiction or Fantasy writers and Science Fiction television fans. At the very bottom of the chart are "people who write erotic versions of Star Trek where all the characters are Furries." Most of those categories either elude or intimidate me, but I appreciate that someone took the time to lay out the traditional geek hierarchy for us. Not sure I fit into it. Check out the Chart to see if you fit in.

Why Dating Geeks and Nerds Pays Off

Oddly enough, most of the geeks I know are well adjusted, attractive people with plenty of luck in the dating and significant other arena, but there are still some people out there that need to be convinced of the inherent joy and satisfaction that go along with dating a geek.

7bits tipped me off to a fantastic list some anonymous person posted on Craigslist expounding Why Geeks and Nerds Are Worth It.

"In the wide world of dating, there are many options," says the anonymous geek lover. "Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys."

For her top five reasons to date a geek, read more

While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are... plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.

They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.

They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such... but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.

Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.

They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?

For the complete list, hop over to Craigslist.

Geek vs Nerd vs Dork: That Is The Question

Ever wonder what distinguishes a geek from a nerd and from a dork? Well now is your chance to clear up some ambiguity. Militant Geek has created a clever and ingenious Geek vs. Nerd vs. Dork comparison chart for us to compare as we dare. They note that "Geeks are those that have technical aptitude, nerds are bright but socially awkward, and dorks are just inept excuses for protoplasm." Ok, to better understand this, they provide the example of a dream job. A geek's dream job would be working for Nasa or Google for example, whereas a nerd's dream job would be working for Marvel Comics and a dork's dream job would be an American Idol Archivist. Are you any of these? Leave your comments below!
