How to Keep Your Social Accounts Private

This year's Obsessed tells the tale of a man whose life is torn apart by a temp worker who falls in love with him and will stop at nothing to win him over. The plot is (hopefully) exaggerated for thrill effect, but the mentally deranged woman, played by Ali Larter, showcases some serious Internet sleuthing and stalking. She Googles the object of her affection to learn all about his life and interests, then flirts, teases, and eventually terrifies via instant messenger. She later fills his inbox with creepy emails and threats. It's certainly not a common tale, but serves as an unlikely reminder that some things are best kept private.

While most social networks offer enhanced privacy settings, which will allow you to keep your profiles private, there are a handful of things you can do to make your accounts less accessible and susceptible to searches made by your new guy's ex or an old friend you don't want to have to ignore online.

Geek Tip: Search Flickr With Fun Tag Browser

One of my favorite things about using Flickr is playing with all the fun applications and alternative ways to view archived photos. If you've already checked out retrievr, Spell With Flickr and Depictr, you should check out the Flicker Related Tag Browser, which offers a beautiful display of images and image tags related to your search.

For example, My "cookies" search turned up a ring of tags like "chocolate," "mint," "food," "dough," "foodporn" and "baking." When I clicked on "chocolate chips" I was treated to a drool-worthy matrix of chocolate chip pictures people have uploaded to Flickr.

Geek Tip: Protecting The Screen On Your Gadgets

I used to think putting a screen protector on your phone was as dorky as the hard plastic covers my great-grandma kept on her "fancy living" room's furniture. However, the ever-increasing cost of smartphones (specifically iPhones!) and the fact that most of us keep our cell phones for a year or three, makes the idea of protecting our screens pretty favorable.

I finally gave in and put an iQuase Film, $19.99 for two, on my iPhone to protect it from smudge marks and scratches. The great thing about the film is that it's a lot like the film that came with the iPhone - it doesn't require a water or soap solution and is easy enough to put on. I have to admit I did a sloppy job on my first try, but TeamSugar saw me struggling and suggested I try using a credit card to gently smooth out the bubbles. It worked like a charm. What about your other devices? You can pick up screen protectors for your other phone models, portable gaming devices and even your digital camera screen from stores like Best Buy, Frey's or even the electronic aisle of your local drug store.

Geek Tip: Try The Rasterbator

The Rasterbator is a brilliant application that creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. All you have to do is upload an image, print the resulting multi-page pdf file and assemble the pages into a beautiful (or disturbing - it all depends on your original image choice) poster that can be up to 20 meters in size. Yes, that's right, you can now create that enormous John Mayer art piece you always wanted.

It's relatively easy to use. You can either upload a file from your computer or use any file that is publicly available on the Internet. You will need a modern browser (Mozilla or Firefox are recommended) with Macromedia Flash Player 7 and you will need Adobe Reader (or other pdf viewer) in order to print the image. After you have cropped the image and selected a desired size, the rasterbated image will be sent to you as an easily printable pdf file. Share your geek tips in the 'How To' Help - Guide To All Things Geeky group! See guide below.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

First of all, join the 'How To' Help - Guide To All Things Geeky
Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
Choose "Blog"
Give your photo a Title
Leave the category as "general"
Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Geek tip")
Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you think this person is geeky, do it before the code that has appeared.
Click Submit

New Google Maps 'Street View' Causes Ruckus

The new Google Maps Street View feature, which allows users to click on maps in major cities and get real images of the street, is causing a real ruckus on the web. In order to make the map work, Google had to send out a van with a bunch of 360-cameras to get street level images. Turns out, not all the images they picked up are the kind people want broadcast throughout the universe. Captured pictures of an old man jaywalking, a smiling man walking out of a strip club and two fellas walking into a cannabis club have made their mark in San Francisco, while two college gals sunbathing at Stanford University are making their mark on "oh there's a girl nearly naked" scene. And don't even get me started on the image (pictured at right) of what looks to be ET touching down in New York. Turns out, the view from the street might be more exciting than the view from the top afterall.
