I've seen plenty of geeky coasters, and while many have been cute, there haven't been a ton that are tech inspired and still totally acceptable as home decor. This Floppy Disc Coaster Set ($28) supersedes all that - the felt material makes them both practical and cozy looking.

Was it really so long ago that we used floppy disks? Here's a Diskette Handbag that utilizes those old and nearly-forgotten little stores of information. This geek generally prefers her bags to have the good stuff on the inside rather than the outside, but there's something a little geek chic about this, isn't there? Of course, you could also avoid paying $50 for this and DIY your own bag with old diskettes (or thrift-store finds, you know they're going nowhere there)! You'd be eco and geek chic! As for this bag, what do you think?

1998 Honda Civic Gets Floppy Disk Body Job

Who copied who? Did the person with the car plastered with computer keys copy this woman with the floppy disk car? Either or, both are quite strange, although some serious points for having the courage to do such a techie thing. Featured on Spluch, this floppy disk car was spotted at the Fremont Fair. According to the creator Weigand, "I wanted to make an art car, something kind of whimsical. It came to me one day that floppy disks are a very cheap thing to acquire and they wouldn’t add any significant weight to the car. I had a bunch from thrift stores and when you ask people, you find out they have a lot in closets or storage." She only had the car for a year before she starting going crazy with the glue and disks. If you look closely, you'll be able to see all the keyboard keys around the windows, on the dash and on the hubcabs. Keep your eyes peeled for this car on the road, which just so happens to have a license plate that reads 'DISKDRV.'

When it comes to tech, so many people misuse the word "obsolete." Just because a newer version of something comes out (ahem iPhone 3G), does not always make the previous version obsolete. It's still functional technology. It just makes you envious of others with the newer one.

That being said, I will totally concede that floppy discs are obsolete. A technology whose time in the sun is as behind as dinosaurs, what are you supposed to do with those useless pieces of black plastic? In this age of green, you don't just throw them away - nope, you reuse. Etsy seller tgarcia has refashioned floppy discs into one-of-a-kind, hand-painted necklaces. However you feel about the chic factor, check out the painting: "Here's to you." An excellent farewell to the disc that was floppy.

I lost a 200-page project in college because I wasn’t properly backing up my work and have been a “saving nut” ever since.
