GE Brings Affordability to Power Cameras

With the amount of professional-grade DSLR cameras on the market today, the only thing stopping you from capturing vacation shots worthy of National Geographic is the prohibitive price point. Traditionally these powerful cameras cost close to $1,000 and more, but after this year's CES, GE hopes to make high-performing digital cameras an affordable option.

At the show, the company better known for its household appliances, unveiled a line of bridge cameras that include pro-level features for under $200. Check out specs and images for the new line of cameras in the gallery.

These Pentax K-x DSLRs are nothing to scoff at - they come with 12.4MP sensors, a rear 2.7-inch live-view LCD screen on the back, shoots 720p HD video, and provide shake reduction, face detection, and image stabilization, all in a compact and portable body. But they also come in a variety of bright colors - ranging from a neon green, to orange - that I'm not sure I'm fond of. Color-splashed gadgets certainly aren't a turn-off for me, but drawing that much attention to a $650 camera seems a little dangerous. What do you think?

Hands On With the Canon T1i (Now With More Photo Tips!)

I finally got some time over the weekend to play around with the Canon T1i and the verdict stands: it's amazing! Not only are the pictures crisp and clear, but overall, the camera is a joy to use. I bought an inexpensive camera bag from Best Buy last week to protect it while en route to various places in the city, and quickly realized how light the T1i really is - a few times I panicked because I wasn't sure the camera was actually in the bag! Needless to say, my heart got a few good workouts in.

I even tagged along with PetSugar to the Ugliest Dog Contest to put the T1i through some trials, and I'd have to say the pictures turned out really well, even if the dogs were really ugly! While out and about over the weekend, I also remembered a few tips that I forgot since getting my first DSLR. Read the manual: Although I'm familiar with SLR settings, it's always good to really get to know your camera from the inside out. That way, you'll never miss an opportunity to use a cool feature.
Pick up a UV filter: You're going to be spending a lot of money on your camera, and even more when you start buying extra lenses. Pick up a UV filter to protect your lens from sun damage. Think of it as sunscreen for your expensive camera parts!
Brace yourself: This rule doesn't only apply to SLR photography - use your arms and brace them up against your body for steadier shots. Don't point your elbows out to the sides (as demonstrated in this photo), as this may create movement and thus blurry photos if you aren't super steady on your own.
Assume the position: When you're done snapping your photo and are carrying your camera over your shoulder, make sure you always point your lens inward and toward your body. This protects the lens from bumping into any objects and saves you tons of money in repairs or replacement lenses.

Canon Rebel T1i First Look: Aaa-Mazing

I've been anxiously waiting to get my hands on the Canon Rebel T1i since its release in May, so you can imagine how quickly I ripped open the box when it arrived! I was stoked that Canon could pack such awesome pro options in a camera tagged with a smaller, more manageable consumer price ($899).

For me, the most exciting features coming with Canon's new 15.1 megapixel DSLR are the full HD 1080p video capabilities, a built-in dust removal system, the fun "creative auto" modes that let you experiment with different variations on the regular auto functions, and it also comes stocked with the same light sensor that you'll find on the Canon 50D - a decidedly more "prosumer" camera but that comes with a much bigger price tag. To find out what else I like about the T1i compared to other DSLRs on the market today, just read more. I always thought my point-and-shoot did a really good job of capturing images, which means it took me a really long time to jump into the DSLR market. But after messing around with the T1i, it pretty much puts my Sony T100 to shame, and is likely to be the best consumer DSLR for its price. One of the great things about the T1i is the weight. This camera is easily a pound lighter than its competitors, which means you're more likely to take this with you on trips, and in my case, less likely to drop it! Plus, it has a nice big LCD screen on the back so you can easily change your settings, and even use it in the "live view" mode to see your upcoming shots instead of using the viewfinder. The T1i's controls are very intuitive (instead of mind-boggling like the ones on the Nikon D5000), has a nice grip to it, and sits really well in your hands. I can't wait to use some of the great photography tips we've accumulated and take the T1i for a more in-depth test drive. I think if you read this site, then you know that plain black sporty-looking nylon just will not do to tote around my gadgets. I've found chic cases for my cell phones, my laptop, and my iPod, but I have had a heck of a time trying to find a bag for my DSLR.

It's over now - Acme Made has introduced their $40 SLR Bowler Camera Bag, which is cute in its own right, but I seriously love that it's not obviously a camera bag. That makes me feel safer traveling on public transportation with it, but at the same time, check it out - it fits in there perfectly and even has side pockets for your memory cards. Consider my Christmas list started.

Ashton Kutcher Pimps Out the Nikon D90 D-SLR
