Circuit City's Back! And Relaunching as Online Store

It's been a few months since we saw the tech giant Circuit City file for bankruptcy and then shutter all of its stores.

Well dry your tears, because it's being resurrected, so to speak: the company Systemax Inc. has bought out the website and brand name of Circuit City, and is relaunching CircuitCity.com.

There's no word of actual stores, but the website - coming to you in a matter of days - sounds like it'll be a nice competitor for Amazon, since it'll offer lower prices, a bigger selection, and faster and cheaper shipping than it did before.

Thanks to a leaked ad that just hit the Internet, we can now get a sneak peek at some of Circuit City's Black Friday sales. Some noteworthy discounts include $100 off select Garmin GPS units and HP Pavilion laptops going for $399. And considering that Circuit City is having some financial issues, I'm sure there will be a lot more where that came from!

It’s hard out there for a geek. No really, it is. While it may seem that everyone you know has their own webpage, two cell phones and knows the Bill Gates biography a little too well, not every city is fully equipped for the geekiest among us.

Wired magazine compiled a list of the 10 Best Geek Cities in America, using what they call “highly scientific methodology as well as algorithms snuck out of NASA and Google.”

The list, which includes my homebase, assessed the geekiness of more than 30 major US cities based on their proximity to top-ranked engineering schools, tech jobs per capita, personal ads per capita on Geek 2 Geek, Craigslists postings per capita, number of attendees at local meetings of dorkbot, a group for “people doing strange things with electricity, available free wifi, comic book stores and Circuit City stores.

Now that the war between HD DVD and Blu-ray is finally over, I bet you're still wondering what to do with that dummy DVD player that you sunk your cold hard cash into. Thankfully, there is a silver lining to your HD DVD raincloud. For all you hard core Best Buy customers, rejoice! If you bought a Toshiba HD DVD player from the home of the Geek Squad before February 23, you're entitled to a nice $50 gift card to replace your defunked player. And if you are an Xbox fan and bought your HD DVD add-on, the refund applies to you as well. Best Buy president Brian J. Dunn, hopes that the gift cards will come as a nice consolation prize for choosing the wrong side in the format war:

"Now that the format war is over, we hope these gift cards will reassure our customers that we will help them make a smooth transition into the right technology for their needs,"
