Should You Be Able to Say Anything Negative on the Internet?

It's quite the litigious news day for the Internet, what with the news that a Yelp user is being sued for his negative review of a doctor, and a model is suing Google because of anonymous nasty comments about her which were posted on a Blogger-hosted blog.

Disregarding the validity of each case, they both present interesting cases for how we should and shouldn't use the Internet; as for Yelp, you're supposed to be able to post negative reviews (reviews tending to be one way or the other); will each negative claim be investigated? Could I be sued for not being able to prove that I found a hair in my burrito?

As for the nasty comments on a blog, I'm pretty sure this model will be told one way or another that a thicker skin is in order. Or will she? What are her rights (or anyone that's bullied) in comparison to the freedom of speech of the anonymous poster?

Could You Give Up and Live Without Your Tech?

I read a story last week about the small (and shrinking) population of US residents that don't have a cell phone - which included my fellow blogger and friend, Gregory Han, from Unplggd. Although a portion of this group do not have the means to own one, a majority of this population has made a conscious decision to ditch the phone by their own accord. It reminded me of a friend that recently gave up his cell along with his Facebook and Twitter accounts in an attempt to clear his mind and simplify his life.

Although some folks see technology as an extra added complication to an already busy daily grind, I use tech to my advantage, and it actually helps streamline my day. From using my iPhone apps to help me navigate the roads, to using 3G and wireless technology to log in and get work done from anywhere. For me, tech allows me to go more places, and stay in touch with family and friends I wouldn't otherwise talk to on a regular basis. This got me wondering - would you give up and live without your tech on a permanent basis?

Vintage Geek: Doogie Howser, Blogger

At the risk of dating myself, I'm just going to put it out there that I was a huge Doogie Howser, MD fan. In fact, I couldn't have been more ecstatic a few years ago when Neil Patrick Harris made a triumphant comeback with Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, which of course led to his awesome role as Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. I watch NPH on HIMYM - a slick, chic geek with his iPhone - and then I remember that this is not the first time he's showcased his onscreen geekiness.

As Doogie Howser, MD, the boy genius-turned-doctor, NPH sat at his ancient IBM PC and tapped out his thoughts daily. That's right, everybody: Doogie was a blogger! Or at least, a blogger in its first form. If Doogie Howser were on TV today, he would have found Blogger and set up shop (with fitsugar on his RSS Reader, of course). So here's to you, Doogie, our beloved old school geek!

Twitter Lists Coming Soon!

One of my biggest gripes with Twitter is that I have a hard time keeping up with everyone I follow. I love to follow my favorite blog updates, but I also love to read what my friends are up to, as well as follow breaking news updates. So I'm overjoyed by the most recent news out of Twitter HQ: lists!

According to a recent Twitter blog post, the feature will be rolled out soon, and it allows you to sort the accounts you follow into groups - for me, my favorite tech bloggers, favorite comedians (Eugene Mirman, anyone?), and best friends. Lists you create are defaulted to public (though you can make them private), and you'll be able to subscribe to other users' lists - a great way to discover new users.

The blog post doesn't give a date, but they've already been testing the new feature with a small group of Twitter users, so hopefully we'll see its release in the next week or so! Do you think you'll use this feature? How will you divide the accounts you follow into lists?

Love It Or Leave It: ck IN2U 'Blogger' Perfume

Last week Bellasugar attended the launch party of Calvin Klein's latest fragrance called, ck IN2U in New York City. ck IN2U is a perfume marketed at all us bloggers out there - an idea that baffled me all weekend and made for a serious bar debate.

The idea is based on the premise that you don't know what the guy looks like that you've been flirting with on IM and email, but you know that he's into you and you are diggin' him for sure! ck IN2U for her is made from: pink grapefruit fizz, Sicilian bergamot, red currant leaves and sugar orchid. ck IN2U for him is made from: lime gin fizz, pomelo leaves, frosted tangelo, cocoa, pimento and shiso leaves. Apparently no essence of RSS reader or blogger sweat made it into the mix. Thank goodness.

Rob and Big Will Call You Out For Blogging on "The 'Space"

Aside from The Hills, my other favorite MTV show is Rob & Big - it's a 180 from the drama of the LA girls, with skateboarder Rob Dyrdek and his BFF Big living it up a lot more lighthearted than their network neighbors. What they do have in common, though, is the frequent mention and featuring of gadgets and tech. The boys have an in-home ATM, a net gun, and spend plenty of time on their Macs and on the internet and "The 'Space" (from now on, this is all I will call MySpace).

This week's episode had Big organizing a dating game for Rob with some lovely ladies from the 'Space, and after one date, Rob discovers his date blogged about his kissing style! The phone-call scene afterward consists of the funniest you're-a-blogger-no-I'm-not confrontation ever - I had to hook you up with it in case you missed it!

Blogging: New Criteria For College Admissions?

If only blogging was as cool as it is now when I was in college...but then again, who knows how much studying I would have done! A recent USA Today article suggests that more universities are joining a growing trend of posting "an interactive online diary and several other unfiltered student blogs directly on their homepages as a recruiting tool." What universities are hoping for, is that prospective students can get a true glimpse of campus life from other students blogging about it. Rather than just visiting links related to admissions, courses, and athletics, potential students can check out other students' opinions and thoughts pertaining to the University.
What do you think about this? A good way to help high school students pick prospective schools? Or a tad too much Girls Gone Wild for your liking?

Fire Flowers: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?
