Bing's New iPad App Is Pretty and Powerful

Microsoft's Bing search engine has just released a shiny new iPad app, aimed to help users search and discover what they're looking for within a bright, colorful, and engaging interface. The app's homescreen image changes daily (similar to Bing.com and its other mobile apps), and also features smaller tiles for staying in the know. Also included, Bing's image search, displaying search results in grid view with image sources and full-page previews.

Additionally, a special Trends feature shows users the top 10 trending searches of the day (and past seven). Bing Maps offers road, aerial, and bird's-eye views of streets. It even includes voice search! You can download this free app from the App Store.

Bing Gets Into Social Shopping With New Shopping Lists

Shopping List For Bing works in conjunction with the search engine's product search, and through Facebook Connect it allows users to share their shopping lists with friends and family.

Although there were some major searchable milestones this year, like Antennagate, the World Cup, and the release of Sex and the City 2, just to name a few, it seems that a bikini-clad Kardashian can take them all down with just a few Twitpics. Bing's Newest Friend: Jay-Z

I'd argue that Google knocked it out of the park with its Arcade Fire Chrome Experiment, but now Bing is hoping to use a big-time musician for a successful marketing push. Jay-Z is releasing his 300-page autobiography a page at a time in cities across the country, and fans can locate the pages by logging onto bing.com/Jay-Z, which uses Bing Maps to guide players to the pages.

The project also takes advantage of the new Bing-Facebook partnership as Facebook is used to authenticate users who sign up, and clues to the pages' locations will be posted on Bing's Facebook page. According to Bing, the campaign is aimed at growing the Bing audience, and apparently Jay-Z fans (not just his 4 million social networking connections) have "heavy search tendencies." Who knew?

The promotion (scavenger hunt?) lasts until Nov. 20; 200 registered winners will receive prizes for finding pages.

How Bing Says Search Gets Better Because of Your Friends

In short, it's a way to combine your friends' recommendations with other search suggestions, providing a complete set of results and information about any given topic. Download of the Day: Newly Updated Bing iPhone App

I was an early fan of the Bing iPhone app after its initial launch, and now the app is even more useful! Microsoft released an update to the Bing app adding two important features: travel and maps.

I use Bing's travel search almost exclusively to find plane tickets, so I'm especially excited about this update, which adds a "Travel" tab to the app's home screen and allows you to search for the best plane fares - complete with Bing's Price Predictor, telling you when the best time to buy your tickets will be. Plus, there's a calendar for highlighting special deals and other offers.

Additionally, Bing has incorporated its updated Maps function and optimized it for mobile, including larger font sizes for larger roads, easy switching between Map and List views, and an enhanced "what's nearby" function allowing you to quickly navigate different neighborhoods.

The Bing app is free from the iTunes Store.
