It's About Time: 3 Steps Closer to Back to the Future II

We've seen film magic turn into reality before - remember, the tablet was first seen on Star Trek! Now for those who daydreamed of a life as cool as Marty McFly's as a kid, your turn has come. During this week's New York Toy Fair, Mattel announced plans to produce the pink hoverboard from Back to the Future Part II.

OK, there's no actual air hovering that will occur, but it's a 1:1 replica that will glide over most surfaces and make whooshing noises. Mattel will take pre-orders from March 1-20 for the hoverboard, expected to ship in the 2012 holiday season. There's a bit of a catch: Mattel needs you to get your fellow superfans to pre-order the product to bring it to production. As they say, "Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don't receive the minimum orders, won't go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month."

Look For the Electric DeLorean on Streets in 2013

Move over Batmobile, if there's one car straight from a movie we'd take home in a heartbeat, a DeLorean in the style of Back to the Future is at the top of the list. A built-in flux capacitor isn't even required. And as it turns out, the DeLorean Motor Company is still in business, repairing parts from old DMC-12 vehicles and even building new custom cars using 80 percent original DeLorean parts and 20 percent modern engine technology.

The DMC has joined forces with an electric car company, called Epic EV, to produce a new fully electric DeLorean. A prototype of the electric DeLorean, called the DMCEV, was displayed at last week's International DeLorean Owners Event in Houston. The two companies hope to have the DMCEV in production by 2013. The ultimate fan car and good for the environment! Pricing details weren't released alongside the DMCEV's unveiling; how much would you be willing to pay to bring a piece of your favorite movie home?

The Nike MAGs went on sale via Ebay yesterday, and since there are only 1,500 pairs of Back to the Future-inspired shoes being auctioned off for charity, most of us will have to do with just looking longingly at photos of the futuristic kicks. A Close-Up Look at the Back to the Future-Inspired Nike MAGs

As we mentioned earlier, Nike is rolling out a real-life version of Marty McFly's self-lacing Nike shoes, and High Snobiety has an early look at the shoes in person. Head there for more pics! The shoes will be sold for a good cause, too: proceeds will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. We're drooling over here.

Update: Nike will be auctioning off 1,500 pairs of MAGs during a 10-day event (150 pairs per day) starting tonight at 8:30p.m. PST and running through Sept. 18 via Ebay’s Fashion Vault. Unfortunately the shoes don't auto-lace, but I'd still get the credit card ready just in case.

Nike Set to Release Marty McFly's Self-Tying Shoes?

I've pretty much waited my entire adult life for this moment: Nike may be set to release Marty McFly's sneakers, the Air Mags, from Back to the Future 2 after patenting the self-tying laces last year. A new video has surfaced (uploaded from DocEmmettBrown88, no less) of "McFly's Closet," which shows rows upon rows of the futuristic shoes.

Additionally, Nike has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow in LA, which only makes me more anxious to see what the company has up its sleeve. Hold your collective breath for tomorrow's press conference, but in the meantime, check out the video below the break.

DeLorean Hard Drive: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

Did you get your copy of the 25th Anniversary Back to the Future trilogy? Come to find out, your collection isn't really complete until you snatch up this DeLorean external hard drive that replicates Doc Brown's time-traveling auto, complete with moving parts. The 500GB hard drive is priced at $250, which is close to what you'll pay for designer or high-end hard drives, but of course, this is Back to the Future we're talking about here. Who wouldn't want this on their desk!?

Cell Phones in 1928: Is Time Travel Really Possible?

By now you've probably seen the video of filmmaker George Clark dissecting a piece of footage from a Charlie Chaplain movie, in which it looks like a woman is talking on a cell phone . . . in 1928. Although there are many possible explanations which range from amplifying her hearing to adjusting her hat, curious folks are left wondering: is time travel really possible?

According to my favorite time travel flick of all, Back to the Future, of course! But in the real world, time travel could move from fictional films to real life with the right tools. Start chillin' your Pepsi Free's and practicing your guitar licks, cause the Back to the Future trilogy on Blu-ray hits stores today! Coming with all three installments (along with digital copies for your mobile devices), the BTTF 25th anniversary edition comes packed with hours of behind the scenes footage, deleted scenes, and documentaries so you can get a closer look at the making of everyone's favorite time travel trilogy.

I got a chance to check out the Blu-ray pack for myself and was truly amazed at the film quality - the flicks have all been remastered for HD viewing and look better than when they were first released in theaters in 1985. Couple this with the announcement that the Back to the Future game is hitting your Mac, PC, and PS3 beginning next month, well it's going to be a very heavy holiday, indeed.
