Harrods' In-Store LED Light Display Tantalizes the Tastebuds

If you've ever been to London, visiting Harrods - one of the world's most famous department stores - is an experience in itself. Well now there's something else to tempt your eyes in this gigantic department store. . . an array of 3D-lighting window displays created by The Anemix - a Chilean lighting company.

Cool Hunting discusses how this six-panel lighting system was created for Harrods' in-store "Senses" campaign to mimic the human senses. The window displays will be up until March 28, when the Senses campaign officially ends. Have a peek at more images below.

3D Cubic Switchplate: Love It or Leave It?

Outlets are usually a source of stress - there's rarely enough of them in your place to feed your gadgets, and they've definitely never been high on any scale of pleasing aesthetic home tech. You could change all that with these 3D Cubic Switchplates ($9), which embrace the utilitarian nature of the outlets and light switches by framing them and making them look a lot cooler. (It worked for cords!)

Of course, I think most people would prefer to camouflage the outlet, especially when it's got cords coming out of its face.

Lifelike Homer and Mario Freak Me Out

So you should all know by now, I love Mario just as much as the next geek. However, I would have to think twice before wishing he was a real live person! I've been putting off posting about these textured (and scarily lifelike) photos of Homer and Mario 'cause they kinda freak me out!

Seriously though, I gotta hand it to the devoted dude over at Pixeloo, because he really put some effort into "un-tooning" my fave plumber and the number one dad of Springfield in some serious weeklong sessions of Photoshop. To hear about how he did it, just read more

The artist started by cutting and pasting different parts of faces from random pics (including one of John McEnroe), then layered them on top of reference photos of the toons to create these 3D renders. Although he does say these aren't meant to look like real folks:

"For clarification, these aren't studies of what Homer would look like if he was a real person, its just what a cartoon like Homer would look like if he kept his toon proportions but had realistic texturing and lighting."

I still can't help but think that if I saw these guys on the street, I would have to immediately run in the other direction! Since he's remained anonymous on his blog, we'll just give him some kudos here for freaking us all out!

Do You Participate in Second Life?

For those of you who only take light doses of geekdom let me explain: Second Life is a 3-D virtual world that's built and owned by its residents. It opened to the public in 2003, but is now inhabited by more than 6,240,591 people from around the globe, who create avatars of themselves, buy land, spend money, go shopping and do all the other things you might do in the non-virtual world. "From the moment you enter the World you'll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity," says the Second Life website. "Once you've explored a bit, perhaps you'll find a perfect parcel of land to build your house or business."

Currently, the phenomenon is filled with high profile appearances and a rapidly expanding list of residents - last summer Suzanne Vega became the first major recording artist to perform live in Second Life avatar form, American Apparel opened a virtual store, and L'Oreal Paris even held a Miss Second Life beauty contest. It's also home to some controversy. Last week, a ginormous media circus occured after a German TV station alleged there was child pornography in the community. According to reports, the claims were found to be inaccurate (the accused man was 54 and the woman was 27), but nonetheless, the community is back in the public eye.
