Discount Retailers Faceoff: Target Prices Beat Walmart

We generally associate Walmart as the ultimate retail store for bargains, but Target prices are actually lower than Walmart's, CNN reports.

We generally associate Walmart as the ultimate retail store for bargains, but Target prices are actually lower than Walmart's, CNN reports. Although the difference doesn't seem to be all that much, it might matter to frugal shoppers who are counting pennies.

In fact, the surveys that observed the price disparity noted that this year's January and February prices for Target items have been slightly cheaper than Walmart's, which traditionally has not been the case. And if you add in Target REDcard's five percent member discount, you'll be saving even more — the gap between the Target and Walmart prices increases to almost six percent.

Are you surprised by the results? Which discount retailer do you prefer: Walmart or Target?

Walmart Aims to Healthify Its Food Lineup

As grocery bills continue to get steeper, Walmart is hoping to make a name for itself as an affordable place to buy healthy, wholesome food.

As grocery bills continue to get steeper, Walmart is hoping to make a name for itself as an affordable place to buy healthy, wholesome food.

At a Washington news conference Wednesday, America's largest grocer stood by First Lady Michelle Obama and pledged to make its food products more healthful — and affordable. "We don't think any American should have to choose between what's affordable and what's healthy," executives at Walmart declared. The decision is right in line with Obama's food policy push for more corporations to market healthy food to kids.Walmart pledged to build new stores in urban and rural underserved areas and reformulate thousands of packaged food items by 2015, removing industrially produced trans fats, cutting sodium by 25 percent, dropping added sugars by 10 percent, and developing new labeling that'll call attention to whole-grain and unsweetened food options. It also plans to work with suppliers to lower prices on fresh produce at a rate that will save customers $1 billion annually.

The corporation's plan follows efforts to source more food sustainably. Regardless of its motivations, I'm glad Walmart's taken this long overdue step. Will you shop there more?

Preorder the 3DS at Walmart, Get a Free Case

Walmart is pretty well-known for its affordable gaming bundles, and the latest addition to the DS lineup is no exception.

Walmart is pretty well-known for its affordable gaming bundles, and the latest addition to the DS lineup is no exception. While the launch date and price for the Nintendo 3DS were just announced yesterday, Walmart is already jumping on the preorder bandwagon bundling the console with a free case.

Starting today, when you preorder the Nintendo 3DS ($250) through Walmart's website, you'll get the Nintendo-licensed case shown here for free, which goes for $10 if bought separately. Not a bad incentive to ensure you get your 3DS when it launches, especially since it's already predicted to be a pretty hot-ticket item this Spring.

Walmart Is Launching Real Makeup For 8-Year-Olds

Remember the halcyon days of the early '90s, when kiddie makeup from Walmart meant Mary-Kate and Ashley clear glitter that immediately came off?

Remember the halcyon days of the early '90s, when kiddie makeup from Walmart meant Mary-Kate and Ashley clear glitter that immediately came off? Well, it seems Mary-Kate and Ashley's out for the current generation. Now, Walmart is launching a new collection called GeoGirl. According to one executive vice president at the brand's manufacturer, Pacific World, the line is designed to be "real cosmetics with natural ingredients that will create return purchases and create a true beauty consumer." Ah yes, because the point with these things is to create children who feel like they need makeup.

Anyway, the paraben-free line, including mascara (seen above), lipstick, cream blush, and mineral powder, will be launching Feb. 21. It's discomfiting that family-centric Walmart, which pulled Maxim's latest issue over Olivia Munn's peekaboo lacy underwear cover, will then target makeup at kids so young. What do you think? Would you be OK with your "tween" wearing the blue mascara or red lipstick from this line?

Hershey's Partners With Walmart to Launch Products Abroad

Hershey's is moving further away from its small-town feel and edging toward world domination.

Hershey's is moving further away from its small-town feel and edging toward world domination. In an attempt to keep up with rivals Mars and Kraft in markets abroad, the all-American confectionery has inked an international distribution deal with the world's largest public corporation, Walmart.

The company plans to expand beyond its US stores next year, when it will sell products such as its famous Hershey's Kisses, along with other candies, in the UK and parts of Europe through Asda, the British subsidiary of Walmart.

There, it'll compete head-to-head with other rival US candies, such as Snickers and M&M's (owned by Mars) and Cadbury and Nabisco (Kraft). It's hard to imagine heavy-handed American milk chocolate dominating the more-refined Asian and European markets. Do you think Hershey's will find sweet success overseas?
