Outlook.com Integrates Skype Calls to the Inbox

Skype, meet email inbox.

Skype, meet email inbox. Inbox, this is Skype, your new partner in communication crime. After an overhaul to make the Outlook.com email service better at managing the beast that is electronic mail, Microsoft has revealed one more way streamline online talk tools, with Skype integration right in the inbox.

Unlike Gmail's all-in-one video chat using Google Hangout, Skype on Outlook will require a one-time installation of a Skype web plug-in. Once downloaded, contacts from your existing Skype account can be merged with the Microsoft account. Search for contacts to call, then select the Call function from their contact card and opt for either a video or audio call; fairly intuitive and similar to how Gmail users can connect with friends.

Skype is rolling out to the UK now, and will be added to US accounts in the coming months. Facebook users have been chatting with Skype for some time now, but are you more likely to use the service when it's within your inbox?

Sean Parker's New Airtime Brings Hollywood to the Start-Up Scene

Napster founders Sean Parker (also Facebook's first president) and Shawn Fanning introduced their newest online venture today, Airtime, a video chat service powered through Facebook.

Napster founders Sean Parker (also Facebook's first president) and Shawn Fanning introduced their newest online venture today, Airtime, a video chat service powered through Facebook.

While Airtime users must have a Facebook account to sign in, they aren't limited to chatting with their Facebook friends. Sign in and look for people to connect with based on interests, shared social connections, and location. Sound familiar? The service is similar in concept to other video chat services like Google Hangouts and Chatroulette. Airtime's founders insist this product is different thanks to the Facebook integration and the ability to meet new people with similar interests in the style of a '90s chat room.

Airtime kicked off its launch with the support of about a dozen close Hollywood friends including Ed Helms, Martha Stewart, Jim Carrey, Joel McHale, Olivia Munn, and others who believe the product is the next big thing in social networking.

Facebook Announces Video Calling With Skype, Group Chat, New Chat Design

Mark Zuckerberg announced a few new features coming to Facebook this morning live in Palo Alto: group chat (along with a new chat design) and video calling with Skype integration.

Mark Zuckerberg announced a few new features coming to Facebook this morning live in Palo Alto: group chat (along with a new chat design) and video calling with Skype integration. After a brief overview of the current state of Facebook (its now at over 750 million users), Mark got into the details of all three of these items. Find out more about each one below.

Video Calling

In a partnership with Skype, Facebook will allow video calling to other Facebook users for free. Using video calling is simple: log in to Facebook, select a friend to video chat with, then select the "Start a Video Call" button. Video calling will be one on one, unlike Google+ which allows you to video chat with up to 10 people at once. Good news is, even if your chat partner doesn't have the proper plug-ins installed, Facebook will automatically detect this, and install the appropriate software instantly. Software engineer Philip Su emphasized how simple it is to make video calls on Facebook, which will make it easy for people of all ages to see friends and family face to face. Video calling is rolling out today.

4 Reasons You Need a Webcam

When I first saw Back to the Future 2 back in 1989, I thought it was the coolest thing since Parachute Pants.

When I first saw Back to the Future 2 back in 1989, I thought it was the coolest thing since Parachute Pants. I watched it over and over and wondered if this was how the future would really turn out to be.

One of the most memorable scenes for me was when Jennifer finds herself at her future home. Not only was the "Rehydrator" something I looked forward to, but Marty Jr.'s TV glasses and Marty Sr.'s video chat with his boss Needles totally blew my mind. These days, video chatting is a common way to communicate since it's accessible on all kinds of devices — from TVs to computers to phones. But more than just a way to say hello, video conferencing can be valuable in many areas of your life. Check out five simple ways you could utilize a webcam, or something like the new Umi Telepresence system, after the break.

Will There Be Video Chat on the Next iPhone?

Obviously, I was a little surprised at the lack of a camera on the iPad, mostly because it could serve as a great device for video chatting, but I didn't really consider the benefits of that ability on the iPhone.

Obviously, I was a little surprised at the lack of a camera on the iPad, mostly because it could serve as a great device for video chatting, but I didn't really consider the benefits of that ability on the iPhone. However, there's been some pretty compelling evidence uncovered over the weekend which could suggest that video chat capabilities will be coming stocked with the next iPhone. This means a forward-facing camera would have to be installed before it hits shelves, which is historically released each Summer.

I'm getting pretty excited about this possibility, since iChat is a great way for me to keep in touch with my family, and virtually hang out with my pals when we're far away from each other. If I didn't have to whip out my laptop every time I wanted to see someone's smiling face, it would be even easier! What do you think — are you on board with an iPhone coming with video chatting, or do you see it as a waste of time?

Do You Use Webcams?

I'll be the first to admit I'm a little camera shy when it comes to using webcams.

I'll be the first to admit I'm a little camera shy when it comes to using webcams. In college one of my best friends used one to keep in touch with her friends and long distance boyfriend, but I was always a little squeamish. But ever since I started using a MacBook, which has a built in iSight camera, I've gotten a ton of requests from people on my buddy list to video chat and I'm slowly getting in to it. According to a New York Times article, with the advent of higher quality webcams that offer good picture quality for a low price video chatting is on the rise.

Right now the most popular instant messaging programs that support video chatting include those from AOL, Skype, Yahoo and Microsoft.
